i know there is a simple way to stop my nappies from stinking, but i would really like step by step instructions.
I dont wash in hot water as that part of our machine has broken. I could however bucket hot water in for a wash cycle if thats whats needed for a once off, or for a couple of times.
Usually i rinse cycle, then wash with 1/2 the amount of powder.
Sometimes i will do another rinse if i notice that they are particulaly stinky, but dont like doing that as i feel i am wasting water.
If my nappies are smelly I toss a bit of vinegar and a couple of drops of lavendar oil in the fabric softener bit at the top of the agitator. Also do you dry them outside?
There could be a few reasons for the nappies being smelly but I find that they do need a strip wash every few months. You can find strip washing methods in the same forum as above.
I've had the following washing regime now for a long time and found smelly nappies aren't really a problem anymore for us but Caleb has all of his teeth. I reccon teething is a factor at creating that strong ammonia smelling wee that can linger.
I wash every second day and do a cold prerinse in the washing machine first to rinse out the urine and ensure they are being washed in clean water.
For the wash cycle I wash in cold mostly with a 1/4 scoop of Euca powder for detergent.
Once a week I will put dettol rinse in the fabric softener dispenser and that cycle I wash in hot.
Using vinegar will reduce the life of the elastic and delaminate PUL too so isn't recommended for regular use so be wary of that.
Hey Sammie, LOL about the dog! (Sorry, it must be very frustrating!) (I only asked because I find that when I dry them inside they smell a million times worse than outside.) But under cover is fine I would've thought - it's more the fresh air that makes the difference IMO.
I use the same amount of washing liquid for the washes with vinegar. The vinegar and oil is only a small amount and really only for the smell factor, not for stain removal.
Like Raven said, vinegar can weaken the fabrics and make them wear out quicker, so best not to use it every wash. But I find that I need to use it for mine. Even just the oil in with the wash doesn't work as well, I find.
Probably a case of trial and error until you find something that works for you, I spose. You may also find you're not using enough washing powder/liquid? Maybe trying a new one will help.
Thanks guys for the advice.
I have washed all the nappies and boosters in vinegar and bicarb and they are soooooo much better.
Thanks Sam for the link, i dont know why i couldnt find the maintenece bit - must have had a toxic brain due to the nappy stink!!!
Some of it is cos she is teething, so i think that this will be an ongoing thing for a while as her wee is quite smelly (not UTI smell thou)...
Anyway, all done and i am enjoying the nappy change now (well as much as you can lol)
