I found about a month ago that I had miscarried my first child, still coming to terms with it emotionally, breaking down at the drop of a hat and getting episodes of the "why me's" whenever I see other people and their children. Had a ERPC on November 5th with a Spinal Aesthetic as heart conditions/asthma/blood pressure meant that i was a bit too high a risk for general. Spent 3 days in hospital as a result.
Now 3 weeks to the day later I'm still bleeding, I stopped bleeding briefly from Thursday to Saturday, but started bleeding again on Sunday. I noticed a sore throat/fever/cramps/nausea/abdominal pain/back pain on Thursday and went to the doctor who assured me it was probably the remnants of flu I'd picked up about ten days after d&c. Told me to take paracetamol assured me I'd be fine. I noticed a foul discharge on Sunday, which DH described as smelling similar to an infection he had when he had an ingrown toe-nail.
Went to the out hours GP who told me I probably had an infection and prescribed Flagyl and a Canestan pessary, with ponstan forte for pain, and advised me to see my own GP asap.
Went back to my GP who told me not to take the canestan as, according to her thursh is not something serious and treating it could probably wait, and prescribed me Keflex. She also proposed that my bleeding accompanied by cramps on Sunday may be a period, although it was much much lighter my regular periods and I was told to expect a much more heavy/painful period, so I don't know. I kinda feels like a period but maybe thats just my wishful thinking in wanting to get back to normal. I feel all over the place.
I'm still having cramps, my lower abdomen still feels sore and the nausea shows no sign of diminishing. But the smell in the discharge seems to have gone as far as i can tell.
I've made an appointment to see another, more senior doctor, at the practise on Thursday. To ask about the nausea, and the other remaining symptoms, but also to get a second opinion.
I don't know what to do. Can infections after a miscarriage be serious? What causes infections? I'm only 21 and my hubby and I are keen to TTC as soon as its safe for us to.
Also would getting an infection delay when I could get my next period?
Urgh, I'm just so tired and worried. Hubby and I just cry all the time and just miss our little Bubba...
Any help will be much appreciated.
Love to all! xxx

I am so sorry for your loss. The pain only compunds when you are suffering physically too
I would get a second opinion from a different doctor - just to be sure. I wouldnt be comfortable with such conflicting info from the hospital/your doc.
Hi sugarfiend,
so sorry for your loss
I would get onto another Dr and get a better answer. Infections after D&C are normaly caused by a small amount of tissue left behind as when they do a D&C they cant see what they are doing and therefore it is possible that they may miss something. Im not sure if there could be any longterm effects of an infection but a lady that was in my belly buddy group lost her little boy at 20 weeks and she had bleeding for 6 weeks after birthing him. When she finaly went to Dr she had a little of the placenta remaining and that is what was causing the bleeding.
I had a D&C in Nov last year, all went well and from memory I think I only bled for about a week but then I didn`t get a period untill about 6 weeks later.
Hang in there and I hope it all works out for you.
Take care.
Onemore - Do you know how she resolved the issue with the remaining placenta, did she have to have a second d&c or is there some other way to do it?...
Absolutely worrying myself sick thinking that there might be something terribly wrong. Usually if something can go wrong for me it usually does...
hey! I hope you and your partner are doing ok. What you are going or have gone through with the infection sounds alike like what im currently going through now. I found out on the 5th of january that i lost our little blob. I had a smell and alot of discharge, mainly clear up until yesterday. I wne to a new GP who did some swabs for me. I t came bback at some Vaginitis. (eww) but i started the meds today in hope that it'll all clear up soon and i'll be right and ready to try again.
Hope you and your partner are going well xox
When we miscarried in December of 2007 I had a D&C...a few weeks later I was feeling much better and decided to TTC right away...as a result I got a uterine infection...it was very painful I could barely walk and there was a smelly discharge...it was from resuming sexual relations too soon after the surgery...so be careful. The antibiotics cleared it up pretty quickly. Just an FYI...
