protein s deficiency

Hi all, im pretty new to this site...
I am having baby number 5 and found out during baby number 2 preg that i have protein s deficiency. I am on 60mg of clexan everyday and 120mg aspro every morning while preggers. I was wondering if there are others here that have the same as i have not yet heard from anyone else with it yet.
Im not sure if i have posted this in the right place... so please bare with me till i work out this site.

Hi,

I had my first baby on 3/02/09. On the 21/02/09 I had 4 seizures as the result of two blood clots in my brain. I have had two clots in my right leg and just last week was in hospital again with a clot in my lungs. I have a protein s deficiency and will be on warfarin for atleast 12 months. My Dr has told me that for any subsequent pregnancies I will be on clexane injections for first trimester and then on warfarin after that until 32-34 weeks then back on clexane until birth.
I find the clexane injections are really horrible.

I'm new to this website too. I saw your two posters and I have the same problem. Hope we can go through this horrible and painful experience together with each other's help. I had two miscarriages in 2007 and the potential reason was protein s deficiency. I have no kid yet. I'm currently 6 weeks pregnant and so worried I will miscarriage again. I will have an ultrasound in week 7. After that, Doctor will put me on Clexane. I have been having 100mg Aspirin since early March. Does anyone know will Clexane cause harm to feotus? I?m worried the injection will cause bad effect to baby. Are you in Australia? I?m in Perth. Hope we can keep contact and support each other. Many thanks!

I have been told by my physician that Clexane will not pass through the placenta, where as warfarin will harm your baby in the frist trimester only but is safe there after until approx. week 32 where clexane is preferred due to easily reversing the affects during birth. I am in Brisbane. I hope all is well. Kylie

PAT.....I was also told that clexane wont cross the placenta... I have had 2 healthy baby's while on clexane plus this bubs. I wish you all the best Pat yes it would be good to have the support from others as well with the same condition. I am in NSW...
KYLIE... Oh that doesn't sound to good there it sounds ike you have been through a hard time....and yes clexane is horrible.... I find maybe 1 out of hmmm 20 don't hurt lol...

Have either of you been on Warfarin?
I would really love to have a 2nd child but am really concerned at the risks I may be taking. The pain I have had over the last 3 months has been excruciating and being in hospital several times with a newborn baby has also made it very hard.
My physician thinks I may have had post-partum pre-eclampsia.

I have never heard of postpartum pre-eclampsia... Did you Dr say if you had more children that you would be more likely to have this happen again?

No less likely only .5-1% chance if medicated throughout my pregnancy. But still very scary as I almost died with the clots in my brain.
How did you find out you had Protein S Dificiency?

Hi there, I am very new to this too and hope this all works and Im pressing the right buttons. I also have Protein S Deficiency. I Lost my first baby at 22 weeks at the time noone knew why. When I fell pregnant with my 2nd I was put onto a Private specialist through King Edward Memorial Hospital (I am in Perth) his name is Dr Craig Pennell, he specialises in complications not just an obstetrician. If it wasnt for him I wouldnt be the mother of a beautiful and healthy 2 yr old girl. At 16 weeks with my daughter a heomotoma developed and it looked as if we were going to go down the same road as with the first but Dr Pennell put me straight onto Clexane and Asprin and within 2 weeks the signs were all good and my daughter is here and healthy and he assured me that the Clexane does not do any damage to foetus whatsoever. I had never even heard of this condition before seeing him. With my first pregnancy I had a whole range of issues but noone seemed to pick up on any of this so I am so thankful for being put onto Dr Pennell.

It’s so nice to hear from you!  You are so quick. Thank you all for your response. I’m so relieved when I saw Clexane will not pass through the placenta and cause harm to foetus.

I had my blood test today. The pregnancy hormone level is normal. Hurray! I will have an ultrasound on this Tuesday 12th May, so I will know if it’s a viable pregnancy. After that, specialist will put me on Clexane.

I used the Clexane (40ml) once, the needle is so big, and left a bruise on my belly. I’m imaging if I need to use Clexane everyday, how many holes and bruise I will have on my tummy? What brand of Clexane you are using?

Kylie, I’m so sorry hearing you had clots and gone through the terrible clotting problem. Hope your next pregnancy will not cause clotting problem if you use the medication as your Dr suggested.

Mizerech, you said “i have only been on clexane through pregs and hepran for 6 weeks after bubs is born”. In which week did you start using Clexane and until which week? So you only use Hepran for 6 weeks after birth? What’s Hepran for? Is it an injection?

My protein S level is around 47 to 50 (normal range is about 75 to 155 if my memory is right.) There are three or two types of protein S deficiency. I’m belonging to type one (the common one) as Dr said. I found out this problem because of my two miscarriages. I saw fertility specialist after that two sad experiences, and the Dr asked me to test protein S. Do you mind if I ask which type do you have and what level you have?

In Dr report, there are a few suggestions for people with protein S deficiency: don’t sitting too long without moving; if go on long trips, then wear special stockings; don’t use hormone therapy; Take Aspirin daily as your normal life event; etc I cannot remember all. The report is at home. I’m now at work. I will post more when I have another look of the report.

Mizerech, It’s so happy to see you are having the 5th child and due in two months. All the best! I’m already in my thirties, and have not had my first baby. I have to work harder. If not, it will be too late to have 3 or 4 kids, which is my dream. 

No, Kylie, I have not used Warfarin. Probably, when I see specialist after my first trimester, he will tell me if I need to use or not. I will keep you informed. It’s first time I hear about post-partum pre-eclampsia. I will do more search on that. Yes, It’s really hard you had that with you having a new born. Hope you are alright now.

Well it seems perhaps I may have some other issues besides Protein S Deficiency as I had the seizures and clots and am still having difficulty keeping my blood levels thin enough to avoid clotting again and Harrison is 14 weeks today.
Pat - I hope your ultrasound went well today. Unfortunately I do not know what brand of clexane they had me on in hospital nor do I know the dosage. I also don't know of my levels for Protein S Deficiency - perhaps I should ask more questions.

Hi ladies - I am on clexane and aspirin for this pregnancy, although for different reasons. I have lupus anticoagulant and prothrombin gene mutation - both clotting disorders - and possibly protein c deficiency. I found out all of this after having 5 miscarriages.

I was started on Lovenox which is generic at 40 mg, and then the chemist gave me Clexane proper when I refilled. They are both the same thing so don't worry too much about the brand.

My OB said I will be on clexane and aspirin until at least 38 weeks (unless I show signs of labour commencing before then) and she will stop the medications about a day or 2 before inducing me. She wants to see if my cervix starts to dialate at all on its own before attempting to induce me as she said it will increase my chances of success. She will not let me go over 40 weeks. I will also need to take clexane for 6 weeks after delivery.

Regarding the shots, I was struggling for a while with lots of nasty bruising, pain, etc. so I talked to my OB and her midwife. The middy gave me a lesson and we realised that I was not quickly jabbing the needle in - I was just trying to gently push it in my tummy. Well, that puts more pressure on your skin b/c you are trying to break it, not stab it if that makes sense. Once I started to jab, I have barely had ANY sort of bruise AT ALL - and it's been like 14 weeks. I also ice the area beforehand, make sure to pinch the skin while injecting, and then I ice the area briefly afterwards. It's not all that bad, esp since I had my 2nd lesson.

Just wanting to know how everyone is going with there babies/pregnancies? I hope all is well.
My little boy Harrison will be 5 months this Friday, he is growing up so quick.
I am still on warfarin and will be for a quite a while yet, but I seem to have got a steady INR now, so hopefully no more clots (fingers & toes crossed)

I have been coming back checking BB. I have only just settled after moving house and have been on pre paid internet until today wooo hooo!!!
I am now 36.4 weeks and off to the Dr tomorrow i finish my clexane tomorrow and get induced in a week hopefully will find out more tomorrow...

My goodness, I can't believe you have been moving whilst pregnant.
You must be so glad to be coming off the clexane. Do you have 1 injection a day or 2? Have you had all your babies naturally? Do they take you off clexane so you won't loose too much blood? Is it really hard doing the injections, or do you get use to it?
I know I will have to have a ceaser again with the next one.
