    Safe Take Away Food ?

I try not to eat to much take away but if I'm in a rush then I will pick something up. My question is, what's safe ? I haven't had anything since I found out I am PG because I'm worried about getting anything with salad in it eg Subway because of listeria or anything with chicken because of salmonella? So if you girls are ever feeling like take away what safe alternative do you opt for ?

take away sure is a hard one!! i spose what u want to know is that its cooked properly and is fresh.. ive eaten mcdonalds a few times so far this preg tho i mainly have cheeseburgers without meat lol so most people say that dosnt count haha.. ive avoided things like subway because of the salads, any salad bars or deli foods, kfc mainly because its so heavy tho and would make me feel sick.. gosh im not very helpful because the more i think about it i cant really think if things that are ok to have.. i spose really its easier to stay away from takeaway unless you know for sure that its been cooked properly and is really fresh..
sorry i couldnt be more help!

I've had Indian, Thai, pizza and noodles just from our local take-away shops since I've been preg. I only order vegetarian (I am veg but have started eating a time bit of home-cooked meat since I've been preg) and I re-heat to steaming hot in the microwave (or put pizza back in the oven) when i get it home / to work.

Yeah I have to admit that before I was pregnant I was what I call 'foodaphobic'. I have always suffered from IBS and some foods just aren't worth the risk so I generally steer clear of take aways that I don't know.
I have had on occassion a subway but just cheese and lettuce, nothing exciting. I have had McDonalds chicken nuggets a few times and KFC chicken strips a few times also. All deep fried and bad for your weight but because they are well cooked you usually wont have any nasty bugs in them. Other than that I really don't trust any thing else other than my Chinese take away to which I have been going to for years and always have the same dish.

Think of it this way. If your cautious about what you eat then you are less likely to stack on the pounds while pregnant and that is a good thing. So far I have only put on 10kg and its all on the bump and my thighs are a tad bigger but thats a bout it!

My theory is better to be safe than sorry! But if you have to eat take away, go the fried foods simply because they are well cooked and no nasties usually survive! But don't do it often. Better to have a snack bar or muslie bar in your bag if you get hungry.

I have had Maccas (they make everything on the spot), KFC chips, gourmet pizza and chinese.

I usually love subway bit have avoided it as the salad bar freaks me out.

I've had maccas 9cheeseburger), kfc (had cravings for their chips with sweet & sour sauce!) & hamburger from a fish & chip shop, I just asked for no lettuce with that one.
I haven't had nearly as much takeaway food as we would normally have though, so I guess like everything, in moderation it's not going to hurt and just steer clear of the dodgy stuff, like salad, particularly lettuce, or get your sandwich toasted.

I did have subway a couple of times when I was pregnant but i only go to the places with a high food turnover. Because all their salad things are chopped up, you can pretty much tell by looking if they've been sitting there a while. But I always had a hot filling (no cold lunch meats).

Hot chips are always a good fill-in!!

I eat Maccas either quarter pounder or cheesburger (no salad and made fresh so fairly safe), I've also eaten Thai, Pizza and Sushi. I know you're supposed to steer clear of sushi but I always go to a shop with a high turnover and I only get cooked fillings. Have had Oporto's too.

Hi Tara, with the Sushi, it's not so much the fillings as the rice. Cooked rice left to cool is a high risk for salmonella. I hate that I can't eat it - sometimes it's all I fancy for a quick lunch in the city during my lunch break!

i caved yesterday and had a steak sandwich from a F&C shop - but i was craving a decent steak sanga! and it was divine! the thing that made it ok from my POV is that i went to a shop owned by mum's bestie, and told her what i wanted - she prepared the salad part fresh, cooked the egg right through, cooked the steak to perfection - and then let me eat it fresh out the back of the shop! it was divine. other than that, the only real take away i've had has been chips form KFC, or the local chicken shop. nothin else is appealling (so the take away hazards don't come into it!)

most things are ok if they are cooked properly and consumed hot.
I've eated maccas (the ones without salad that Tara mentioned) and hot chips, potato cakes etc.
With my last pg I was hungry all the time and ate lots of subway, but I know the one I go to has high turnover as the queues are out the door and down the street.
This time I'm barely hungry so I'm not eating takeaway as often in the first place.

I'm too scared to have focaccias and that sort of thing though, uless I make them at myself home - they are never cooked hot enough.
