    weasel words in the literature

I just thought it was interesting that the literature we come across when reading about VBAC uses a really emotive term like "rupture" which actually includes mostly benign incidences of windows and dehiscences which are of no serious consequence, the term itself sounds very scary. On the other hand, hysterectomy is referred to in some literature as "involuntary infertility", a term that unless you really think about it invokes no emotional response at all, but is actually referring to a hysterectomy as a result of things going wrong. Of course when talking to a woman who wants to a VBAC against hospital/ob advice, they definately use the word hysterectomy, but when discussing the risks of repeat CS (and only if asked) they use the term involuntary infertility.
    Am I becoming too cynical.......

Interesting My most commonly observed "weasel word" is 'choice'. As I grow older... time after time... I observe that the word is often used to confuse and frequently means the opposite. My radar goes up instantly when people in authority use the word choice. Think of "Work Choices". And yes, I often feel that in the maternity business the definition of having a "choice" really varies between the health professional and the pregnant woman. I have a book called Birth Rites, Birth Rights and on the cover there is a comic-style illustration of a doctor asking if his 'patient' would like the light globe switched off or on... while she lies flat on her back on a trolley in labour... sums it up veeery well.
