I've just begun thinking about cloth nappies, and have ventured into the bewildering world of nappy research. There is SOOOO much information and SOOOO many options out there! I am hoping to find a store near me that carries a few different kinds and styles so that I can actually see/feel them, but until then, can you tell me:
1. What is in your cloth nappy collection? ie. what kind(s) of nappies are you using, and what brand name is it?
2. How much did they cost?
3. What are you thrilled with, contented with, disappointed with, wish you had never bought, etc.?
4. What type(s) you would recommend for a mum starting out?
Oh, and there are a number of "no name" versions of cloth on e-bay, that are somewhat cheaper than the brand name ones. Is there any way to tell if they are still good nappies? Or is it best to just stay away from that whole business?
1. I'm a OSFM pockets girl. Really not a fan of anything else. Have a couple of Ai2s.
2. My 'workhorse' nappies are Happy Heiny's and Bumgenius. They *used* to be around the $28 mark here in AUS but with the economic crisis prices have risen accordingly. I also love Blueberries. Itti Bitti's are d'lish And great, great nappies.
3. I LOVE my HH and my BG. I probably prefer the HH, I find them to be a better fit on my DS. I like that thye have an extra snap setting (so higher rise) and the Aplix closure is very wide. I'm quite disappointed with the new Blueberries I bought, I LOVED the old ones that I got second-hand but the new ones just don't do it for me. If I were to purchase more I would buy individually sized inserts for the OSFM nappies as their included ones just aren't as good.
4.Happy Heiny and BumG... however great nappy fits will vary from child to child. What is good on my boy may not be good on your girl.

AIO/AI2 - Itti bitti, iishfly, bubblebubs, zada, wonderoos, magicalls, honeyboy, mums bums
Pockets - hautes, baby cheeks, Bungenius, happy heiny,
Fitteds - babybeehinds, Itti bittis
Night nappys - Zada, Snoozywun, Bubblebubs GNST
2. How much did they cost?
anywhere from $15-30 each

dont like the magicalls or hemp , prefer bamaboo nappies
4. What type(s) you would recommend for a mum starting out? Bungenius,hautes, ib and baby beehinds
I am only a novice at this whole cloth nappy thing but here's my stash:

Bamboo prefolds, terry and flanny flats, BumG, Happy Heinys pockets, Green Kids pockets, Blueberry pockets, Nappylicious AIO, Peapods, Swaddlebees, Itti Bittis AI2, Panda Baby AIO.

$10 - $35+

The prefolds are great for containing newborn poo! I also really like my Green Kids, Blueberries, Itti Bitties.
4. What type(s) you would recommend for a mum starting out?
Bamboo prefolds definitely, then I think you need to get one of afew different kinds and brands and see what works best for your baby and you. My two are quite different so while some brands suit them both some others, eg IB, don't.

Pocket - Happy Heiny, Green Kids, BumGenius, Haute
Fitted - Baby Beehinds (Bamboo), Cute Tooshie, WAHM nappies

Anywhere from $5 (2nd hand) to $30

Happy with - Bumg, Bubblebubs, Happy Heiny
Wish i hadnt bought - Monkey Doodlez (dont last long enough ie more then a few hours but still an OK nappy all the same)

Bumg all the way!
We have mainly AIO/AI2. These ones are Mommy's Touch (should be cheaper over there, they are a USA brand) Cushie Tushies, BabyBeeHinds Magicall (but this also has a pocket)
The Cushie Tushies that we have retail for AU$35 but we got consultant discount
Most nappies have gone up in price recently with the economic crisis but there are a few brands that havent. Most are somewhere between AU$30 and AU$40 now. You will also pay more for dedicated night nappies, but they are worth it.
There is only 1 in my stash that i really hate, and that is the Bum Wear. I get more wing droop on that then any other nappy. I dont love the pea pods but it is still better than the BW.
Starting out I would recommend as many different nappies as you can get, once you have found what works well for your bub then buy up. Some bubs suit some nappies that others dont.
