caught in cot bars?

Hi,

My 4 month old has just started rolling over but now everytime I go into his room he has rolled into the side of the cot and his legs or arms are caught between the bars, this does not seem to bother him much, rather he seems quite proud, but it bothers me.

Has anyone used a cot bumper for this problem and if so what type? I know sids does not recommend them due to ties and buttons on the bumpers as well as suffocation issues but I have seen some on the internet with breathable mesh and without ties or buttons attached. So can anyone recommend one they have used?

I have heard the Air Wrap is fantastic, apparently you can buy it from most baby stores and places like Big W. It is a mesh-like bumper that wraps all around your cot and is completley breathable. Try Googling it

I have the air wrap. Its great as I often find DS on his side with his face snuggled nicely into the bumper & he can breath just fine.

He does still get his arms & legs caught in the bars though as the air wrap is light so his limbs weigh it down & hang out.

I've found it does soften the impact for when he rolls into it though & I'm guessing it stops arm & legs going out as often as they otherwise would.

ETA: you can buy just the 2 sides (like I have) if your cot has the full head & foot of the cot without bars or you can buy the full bumper (either 3 or 4 sides, not sure as I didnt need that one)

I think mine cost around $35 from babies galore, you can also find them on Ebay.

I got an Air Wrap but didn't like using it because I couldn't see DD from bed (she's in our room) so I started using a sleeping bag instead to stop her getting in silly positions.

Thanks, I'll have to look into the airwrap, I also like the idea of the sleeping bag.

Does the airwrap stop the baby getting stuck down the side of the mattress as well?

if your mattress is too small for the cot and there is space for her to get stuck I would be investing in a new mattress. It is very dangerous to have gaps.

We have a sleeping bag, but DS still gets his arm stuck.

I use sleeping bags on my twins also but my DD still rolls around, but she can't get her legs caught when she is in it. I would look at getting a better fitted mattress on your cot also. I think they are supposed to be quite firm in the cot so babies can't get limbs caught down the sides.

Thanks for the advice I've bought a sleeping bag which has stopped his legs getting caught but no good for the arms and now he is rolling over and banging his head on the bars and waking up I'm going to buy an airwrap and as for the banging of the head he'll probably outgrow this. If it's not one thing it's another

The mattress is very firm in the cot, it's the right size for it, I spent a lot of time and money ensuring I had a safe cot before he arrived, it was just the one time I found he had squeezed a hand just down the side whilst wriggling around, we don't give him the nickname of houdini for nothing, he is a master of escape!!
