DD (4 months) has had fluid draining from her right ear for about 3 days so this morning I took her to the Dr to get it checked. It just looks like wax has been draining out. He said it appears she has a perforated ear drum which is said is not uncommon and said probably caused by alot of muscus in her nose which has overflowed out her ear. He said her nose is blocked up and did notice her right eye is a little puffy compared to her left.
She got her first cold at 8weeks and it flared up again about 2 weeks ago but she has never been without a snotty/muscus noise of some sort. He has suggested using saline drops to try to dry up her nose and then if that works her ear should dry up also and if that doesn't work he has said to use 1 drop of Otrivin to see if that sorts it out, otherwise it's back to Dr.
It is not worrying her at all which is why i didn't take her yesterday. She is sleeping very well (started sleeping through about a week ago) and is eating all normal. Happy to play and not unsettled at all so it's not causing her any pain.
Wondering what other people have used to help their bubbas with this. He said not an issue unless it becomes an ongoing problem which may affect her hearing which of course I really don't want so any tips of what has worked to sort this out would be greatly appreciated.
Hi Belinda, my 15 month old DD had a perforated ear drum a few weeks ago now. We had a few rough nights which I put down to teething, but then a few days later she had a clear fluid coming out of her ear, so of course I went down to the Doc & discovered her ear had perforated. The doctor prescribed her drops for her ear and also antibiotics, but I think the AB's were more for her other ear which was infected. Yes she was in a bad state lol. It took a couple of weeks for her ears to clear up completely, in the meantime I tried to stem the pain with nurofen/panadol. However your DD sounds like she is barely noticing it, which is good, because it is apparently very painful! I asked the doc about it affecting her hearing, and she said it wont be a problem unless it doesnt clear up. I hope what your doctor has prescribed works fast.

I've given her 2 lots of Otrivin today and it says I can give her 3 doses a day (only 1 drop in each nostril) but her ear is still leaking today. The inside of her ear actually has a little graze on it from a scab but the fluid is still waxy in colour (a little yellow). I'm just leaving her ear alone and let it do it's thing. I'm suctioning her nose out quite often but not getting alot out so I'm guessing it's all quite far back in her nose. I can hear the snot though so it's there.
Yesterday her eye was getting some discharge but it has cleared up today so hopefully this will work.
Yep I'm surprised it doesn't appear to be bothering her although today she has been a bit fiddly with her feeds (ate alot yesterday but not as much today) but she isn't grabbing at it or anything.
Sorry to hear your little darling has a perforated ear drum - I can't comment much on that, but just had a thought about the general congestion. My DS has always been a snuffly snorter since birth, but it seemed to become even more noticeable as he's got older (I even had strangers in the supermarket comment on my snoring baby! lol!). Anyway, I've actually taken him to see a good osteo (who I saw during my PG also) and she gave him some very gentle treatment - commenting that he was really tight through his sinuses...after 3 treatments his snorting/snoring/snuffling had really really decreased. Dunno if that's worth trying for you? Good luck and hope her ears improve nice & quick
OH and incidentally I rarely could see/get mucous out - it always seemed to be down the back of his nose... he never had a visibly snotty nose IYKWIM - which is what seemed similar from your description. We even had a paediatrician stick feeding tubes down his nose to check his passages were clear (which they were). Good luck with it.
