how do you apply hundreds and thousands to a side of a cake?
does anyone know how to apply hundreds and thousands to the side of a cake on the icing? just doing an upsy daisy cake this week for DD's birthday and no idea how to do it! thanks.
so use a wet icing.
place teh cake on baking paper.
cup your hand fill it with sprinkles then gently press them onto the side of the cake the baking papper catches the excess which can then be reused so no wastage.
I did this not long ago and used the back of a spoon to help press them into the icing, i eventually got the hang of it and didnt take that long after a little practice. Mine was for a butterfly cake so i couldnt just roll it in the sprinkles.
i did this with chocolate flakes on a creamy pav on Xmas day - had it sitting on a piece of baking paper, leaned it up on a fairly steep, then sprinkled. cos it was cream i couldn't press them in, but i made bugger all mess anyway. i think with a cake you could prolly press them in a little bit... just don't do it too much or they'll get lost in the icing and all the effort will be wasted!
Put the sprinkles in a big bowl, pick the cake up (on a board so you don't split the cake) and just scoop up some sprinkles with your hand and press them gently onto the side of the cake over the bowl. That way any excess will fall back into the bowl.
