Hayden was born a week late and has been suffering from dry skin nothing I've used seems to be helping and short of taking him to the dr. (we are going this week) thought I'd ask if you have had this problem and what helped! Seems to be mainly on his head, behind his ears, although his stomach is dry if I don't use cream every day, he's 9 weeks old today!

DS was the same, and still is to a point.
QV products were wonderful.
QV baby balm was great, its greasy though but thats a good thing as its locking in the moisture whereas a cream isnt always as effective.
Their bath oil was good too.
I used olive oil on his scalp has he had the worst cradle cap I'd ever seen, this didnt kick in til around 8-10 weeks though.
I use baby sorbalene and used baby oil on the head to get rid of cradle cap (and still use it after every bath to smooth down DD's fluffy hair). I also was told for really young babies to bath every second day as bathing every day dries out the skin.
Izzy had eczema and we tried everything to settle it as eczema skin needs to be constantly moisturised. We eventually found that the sorbelene kept it under control but I don't like using it because it has petrochemicals in it. James' skin on his legs is like leather right now and we are using QV too but Im about to try emu oil which I combined with the sorbelene on Izzy as well to try and ward off the dryness. If it is really bad then there is cream called Dermeze at the chemist too hun.
My DS's dry & eczema-y skin kicked in from about 8 weeks. For the first few months (about 6mo from memory) I kept him pretty much covered in Dermeze, which is a thick, white paraffin based product. It was great on his skin, and excellent on his scalp, which is really dry. He had a touch of cradle cap, and it was good for this too. It's not the most attactive look though . I tried olive oil, but it just didn't seem to work as well. The Dermeze is good in their bath too, although you want to kind of apply it to them first, then slide them in, otherwise it just floats on top of the water & makes a mess of your bath.
We also use a moisturiser called Dermaveen. It's an oatmeal based product, and, like the Dermeze, can be found in chemists. For my DS's skin this seems to be the thing that works the best. For his scalp, we generally pour on a neat capful of QV oil while he's in the bath, and this seems to keep the flakiness at bay, and as we rinse it off, it doesn't leave his hair with a greased down look. MY DF also has really dry skin (so DS gets it from his Dad), and he also uses a QV wash in the shower, which he thinks makes a difference to his skin. He'll also give his legs a swipe of the Dermaveen if they're really dried out & itchy.
For us, Sorbolene does absolutely nothing. Kind of a pity, as it would save a bit of $$.
Lots of people will rave about Moo Goo - I wish that it had worked for my DS, cos it is divine stuff, and I love that it's really natural products. But we trialled it for a week, and it just didn't do the job that the Dermaveen did, so we reverted back to Dermaveen. My take out from this is that it can be a bit of trial & error to find the product, or product combo that works for your DS, there is unfortunately no holy grail that works for everyone.
Thought I should clarify that I'm not saying that Moo Goo or Sorbolene won't work, it's just that they didn't work as well for us as the other stuff we use.
My DS is 2yo and we still moisturise him every night after his bath/shower with Cetaphil lotion and he is still washed with Cetaphil wash. He was another eczema bub. If we skip a few days his eczema flares up again. He is not nearly as sensitive as he was but we still need to take care with the products we use eg the Cancer Council toddler sunscreen made his skin flare up too.
Moisturise, moisturise, moisturise is our mantra around here. DD's skin is not as sensitive but she gets the same routine nevertheless.
It is seriously trial and error and I am hesitant to suggest products because what works for one kid doesn't for another eg you have had some rave reviews for QV here but that just made my DS' skin worse. Good luck!
Oh - what laundry detergent are you using? If you aren't using one for sensitive skin, I highly recommend you change...I was using Omo Sensitive, Amolin liquid and BioZet for 2 years.
we were the same as bhoysgirl... used sorbolene and olive oil for cradle cap - did not work at ALL for us. He just got drier and drier until he looked like a red lobster. Dermaveen & Dermeze recommended by his paediatrician and have worked wonders (FYI he has ezcema also, so needed some prescription creams to get things under control initially). GL with it... oh and moisturizing EVERY change is absolutely essential for us. oh and i never tried moogoo given the dermeze worked for us.
Sorbolene is horrendous stuff!!! It has petroleum in it!!! Don't put that on your baby! Try the more natural stuff before you resort to the man made chemical ****tails. Emu oil, paw paw ointment, oatmeal in the bath instead of baby wash, don't use baby oil either...all that stuff should be banned. There is heaps of other natural alternatives, have a look on the net.
At this stage I'm now bathing every second day with a mild bath oil, than massaging oil into the skin and topping of with a good cream, already he looks better. My MIL bought some home for work when I mentioned the delemer on the phone she works for Jurlique so we get staff discount, so I'm trying this first.
The doctor was hopeless and I'll be getting it checked by the midwife when she's back in 2 weeks as I value her opinion!
I'm going looking for the Moo Goo, sounds good! I love creams that smell good!!!
I've tried, pawpaw, oatmeal, olive oil and varios others with out too much luck and wont use sorbelene as I really don't like it I'm rather picky. I also hate creams that don't obsorb into the skin, can't stand the mess!
Poor Hayden is a guinea pig for all the creams at the moment! That's what happens when we over cook them!!!! At least he smells yummy, although I might have to eat him soon!!! lol
Olive didn't have a bath for 3 days after she was born and had gorgeous skin until she got jaundice and had to have physephex(sp) baths which totally dried out her skin. In the hospital we used sorbolene as that was all there was but when we got home we used and still use Weleda Calendula oil which I got from my local health food store. Just a few drops in the bath and extra on her skin if needed. It's natural and smells lovely too. I can also testify how good this stuff is as my mum and DH massaged my back with it during labour (50hrs) and my back was smooth as a baby's bottom for weeks.
