Cleaning washing machine - front loader?

Ok so I got all excited about the earlier post about how to clean a washing machine, however I have a front loader and was wondering if anyone has some tips on that? Particularly keeping the water and mould from collecting in the door seal. I find within a few days of wiping it off I get this awful black slimy mould appearing on the plastic seal. It seems to be a bit of a design fault of my (and maybe all front loaders) that water collects here. Help me please!

dusty thankyou so much. that was a wonderful help. I do keep wiping out the lip but its getting a bit ridiculous. Might try the vinegar wash too. Glad I'm not the only one having. Stupid design!!!

A good scrub in the inner rim and a rinse wash with whole bottle of cheapo white vinegar did the trick for mine. Your post is a good reminder for me to do it again! Thanks

June, I just have an old towel hanging in the laundry, and I'll just wipe the trapped water out with that. Reminder for me to do a vinegar or bleach rinse too!

Hey ladies. I am in the process of looking for a FL. are there any brands less likely to have this gunky lip problem? or any brands you would avoid?

Hi myson. My front loader is an Ariston and has never had a problem with gunk or slime, nor odour. I very occassionally do a vinegar hot cycle, and never wipe it out  We've had it for about two years now, and have never had to do anything with it at all. I do the vinegar as a preventative, but I remember it so rarely that I think the machine is just not prone to collecting slime or smell.

I have a Whirlpool machine and it has a lint filter which I clean maybe once a year. It's never all that bad...
I never had a problem with smell or gunk build-up. I never wipe the lip, but sometimes I might find a loose button there. But I always leave the door open between washes. The only thing I need to clean every month or so is the detergent dispenser drawer.
Oh, and I've had my machine for almost 5 years.
However, since Friday, it's been making funny sounds, so I'll be looking at the filter an hoses and hopefully pull out a sock and then the machine might be fine again... crossing my fingers.

We got a Whirlpool a few weeks ago, it sometimes gets a bit of water in the seal at the front but we just wipe it away then leave the door open so the barrel can dry out- that's what they recommend in the manual, will also stop it from smelling.

well mine is an lg. Love the wash it does but I am not really happy about the amount of water that collects in the door seal. I try and remember to wipe it out, but can't leave it open to dry very much as my laundry is in the rumpus room
