Question Pessaries - how long did you/are you taking them for?

    Hello ladies,

Just a wee quick question... how many weeks after your BFP did your FS tell you to use progesterone pessaries for(if you were using them)? I am 9 weeks pregnant tomorrow and my FS has told me to start weaning myself off the two a day to one a day for a week from tonight. So I will be 10 weeks when I stop altogether. I am rather nervous about stopping at all I have to say as I am sure it contributed to my success after seven transfers. I have had no HCG/Progesterone monitoring since my BFP.

Most people seem to stop them at 12 weeks or later as far as I can tell but any feedback would be very gratefully received! Here's to a happy and healthy pregnancy for everyone!

    Hi Lily,
    Congratulations on your pregnancy
I took Crinone for the 2 weeks following transfer, then was switched to the pessaries till the end of week 11. I was also taking Provera and Prognova,at the same time and all 3 were twice a day.
My FS just told me to stop all together once I had finished my pessaries

I cant remember when i stopped my pessaries but when i stopped them i than went onto progesterone injections as apparently they are far more effective - i had regular blood test to check my progesterone levels, and finally at 24wks i think it was i got too stop the injections!!!!!

I think it may also depend on whether you did a fresh cycle or a FET.

I think the placenta takes over P4 (progesterone) production from about week 10, but I am sure there are others with more concrete info.

    Congrats again on your pg!
Feel free to jump in the Pg after LTTTC discussion thread and share your journey with others in similar circumstances.

    Hi everyone,

Thankyou all for getting back to me and sorry for the delay in replying. Work is crazy and I am going to bed at 7pm every night! Thankyou for putting my mind at rest. It is good to know that 10 weeks is normal. I was worrying for no reason!

I stopped mine at 10 weeks also - mine was a FET transfer. I believe that the placenta is taking over hormonal control at that time. It is scary finishing them - I found they were like my safety blanket.

At 10 weeks dropped from morning and night to just night for a week, then every second night for a week, and that was it. We conceived naturally after years of IVF but FS kept me on pessaries just to be sure

Janie - I hear you. Today is the day I stop and I am very nervous about it!
Ellie - congrats to you on a natural after all that IVF. What a great success story!

Thank you again for everyone's feedback. I will be neurotically taking my temperature every morning for the next 30 weeks looking for a drop. I hope this anxiety drops off eventually!

I only used pessaries during the TWW. Once I had a positive pregnancy test I stopped pessaries. This was a fresh cycle and my blood test was on the 14th day after EPU.

It just goes to show that every clinic will have a different protocol and just because yours is different to someone else's, doesn't mean it's "wrong".

Butterfly_warrior I have just got my BFP and have also been told to stop the pessaries now. I haven't had my progesterone tested though. Did you have your progesterone levels tested before they told you to stop the progesterone? Mine was also a fresh cycle and I tested 15 days after egg collection.

    Thanks!

I honestly don't know if my progesterone levels were checked with my pregnancy test or not. If you are concerned, call your clinic and ask.
