how many weeks pregnant am i - i'm confused !

    Hi All !

I had an ultrasound and i am six weeks pregnant, no confusion there,
    but...

when i refer to my pregnancy books they all refer to week one and two being before ovulation and before conception, so by the time i actually concieved when refering to the book i was already two weeks pregnant. We all know this too that's why they say it's a 40 week pregnancy...

    So my question is
i am six weeks pregnant, do i read the info on the baby's development for six weeks in my book, or eight weeks?
how many people have i confused out there now !
    am i the only one???

I am going to the doc for a check up on saturday and plan to ask him then, but was keen to know what you all thought...

    Thanks !
    Erin

when the ultrasound says 6 weeks it takes those first 2 weeks into account.
So you have 34 weeks left

Hi Erin - you sound just like me a few weeks ago - I was doing my head in with this one!
And it was further complicated by the fact that I have PCOS and likely I ovulated much later than 2 weeks after my LMP so that estimation was totally wrong. I had a dating scan at '6 weeks' or whatever it actually was and they gave me a due date of August 13 2009 so from then on I worked it backwards from there since all my appointments were calculated from that anyway. So for all intents are purposes my ticker says "10 weeks and 5 days" so I'm sticking with that
I'd go with your due date and just use whatever terminology fits - I do get you about what week to read as far as development goes - the First Trimester breakdown on this site is great (see Articles under Pregnancy) since it uses both dates for each week.
Ultrasounds can only pinpoint due dates to within a few days either side and first babies are usually 'late' (or take longer to 'cook' sounds more appropriate!) so there's no hard and fast rules anyway.
Phew! I hope I didn't just confuse you further!

All the best with your pregnancy!

If you are 6 weeks pregnant, then you go with the info for 6 weeks pregnant in the books. It does seem silly, but by the time you find out you are pregnant, usually around the time AF is due, you are classed as 4 weeks along.

    hey guys

    thanks for your reply's,
i have to say i am a little disappointed,i thought i should be reading the eight weeks bit in my book.

the ultrasound person should have said that they take into consideration the extra two weeks, i didnt realise that, i guess i should have asked.

Funny though as before the ultra sound my estimated due date was Sept 3 rd and after i was told it is Sept 11th? i do know the first day of my last period was nov 27th.

six weeks in the book it is !

    Thankyou!

    Erin those are 'tickers'.
Just click on the Belly Belly Tickers tab at the top of the page and follow the instructions to add it to your signature (from memory I think you need the 'edit signature' tab on the left hand side of your profile page)
Look forward to seeing your ticker on the page

Ez - in response to you comment... is due dates changing.

They go off the ultrasound if you had one.

If you go off your period you need to remember you ovulate 2 weeks BEFORE you period NOT 2 weeks after your period... if that makes sense.

So even if you had your period for example 1st jan... you may not have ov'ed until 24th? so that is why a week is lost.....

    sorry prob confused you more
