we have never been to the snow and want to go in august(i know peak season but we dont want to miss out)

have you been some where awesome with kids??? where?
    would you drive or fly??
would it be cheaper to buy our own gear or to hire??
What did they have for the kids to do?

We went to Mt Hotham when DD was 18m old. We stayed in a lodge where you have your own bedroom & bathroom but shared living, cooking, games areas. It was fantastic and we had a great time. We drove there and we have our own gear. You can get packages where you buy lift tickets and gear all together. Depending on the kids ages there is daycare, ski school, kids concerts etc and also at the lodge they have pool tables, video rooms etc. If you wanted to spend more money there are helicopter flights, dog sled rides and that sort of thing.

Thredbo has a great children's program.
I wouldn't recomend the Perisher one, it's a bit disorganised and Yasin didn't enjoy himself so much there. He had a differant instructor each day.

For a first visit I think it's better to hire your equipment. You can buy second-hand children's snow clothing on ebay and it's usually in good condition.
