*Long* Ideas for decorating 7yr old's new bedroom.

Okay - so we're moving into a new house soon, and we've bought 'the boy' (7) a new cabin-style bed, well, secondhand, and it needs a coat of paint. This sparked the idea of painting the different bed panels different colours, to liven up the room a bit. So the boy was asked what colours he wanted his room to be and he responded immediately with 'pink and purple'. Now I'm gay and my family's very queer-friendly so we don't personally object to that if he wants it, knowing it doesn't even mean anything at his age, but we *are* concerned that if he has friends over that some may comment that his room is girly... We're concerned he may get picked on.
We suggested that maybe the pink wasn't a great idea but that the purple was good, what other colours did he like?? So now he's picked purple and gold... better but hard to do... I'm pushing for purple and blue but he doesn't want to hear about it... my mum's going purple, orange and green... which sounds awful to me - not sure of his opinion.
The carpet is a dark mocha colour and the walls are pale grey (and won't be painted). We'll coordinate the doona cover/sheets, a rug if he wants one, lightshades etc, and we're going to get one of those massive wall-canvases and paint an abstract in his chosen colours...
What I'm after now is ideas of colours that go with purple, that my mother and I and the boy can all agree on!!

What about different shades of purple? And a similar mocha shade to the carpet? At least that way it would all tie in together.

Why not go to bunnings or wherever with all the little paint cards and just see what does (and doesn't!) go together that you are all happy with?

Why don't you pick a theme, see what other decorator items you might be able to find. At the same age my DD was dead-set on having a planetary theme, big decals of the planets, stars, etc. Some of them are large and bright. Perhaps you could start with something similar (a pack of large wall decals, or a feature fabric that has the colours in that he's wanting) and then add chunks of THOSE colours in onto the bed, kwim?

BTW - bright colours like lime green, chunky orange and dark retro 70s purple (in small amounts LOL) could go really well together, along with a magenta colour. Our schools in the ACT were recently all painted with a combination of these colours (in small amounts) and it looked great. Perhaps the trick is finding a fill colour (like dark grey) to bring them all together??

I think purple goes well with red, yellow or green. Reckon he'd go for any of those?
Purple and gold is cool though!

My Little mans room is purple and blue, he had green furniture with red knobs.
It is a great combination, i wasnt sure at first but when it all came together it was great.

Oh and by the way my Hubbys best mate still loves pink and purple. At his wedding we wore purple dresses and the guys purple ties.
