Hi,
Our Maltese ****zu's Millie & Scruffy have had 3 puppies. It was so exciting, she did so well, they are feeding well and so so tiny. Scruffy sits outside the kennel, it is like he is guarding them all it's so cute. Just wondering if there is anything we should do regarding the heat tomorrow, it is going to be 42.
YAY for puppies!!! Yes if its going to be 42 you should help out in some way... do you have any fans you can point towards the front of the kennel? Extension leads etc... and put a cold wash draped over the front of the fan to help cool the air. We generally keep pups on heat mats etc for the first few days. So the hot weather isn't detrimental, but pups don't regulate their temps very well, so we don't want it too hot either.
Mummy should be on a puppy food diet, preferably a top quality puppy food like Hills Science etc. She needs extra calcium and calories to get through the first 4 weeks. Generally after pups are born, our vets recommend seeing your vet within 48 hours, so they can check out mum & make sure all is well, and have a quick check of the pups to check for cleft palettes. Also, did you have an idea how many pups? The vets would want to make sure there aren't anymore pups.
Thanks Christy, I told DH about the fans and he said he would put our air cooler out there for them, at least it blows out cooler air. I'm just waiting on our car to come back from the mechanics and I'll be off to buy some special food for our special girl.
hiya
mummy should preferably on a hot day be inside..pups will die in excessive heat VERY quickly, maybe in the laundry??
mum should also be having small frequent meals throughout the day..as their calcium levels after having pups can drop dramatically... offer her milk aswell (milk for dogs) and yes she should be having puppy formula food if she is having dog food.
feel free to PM if you have any other questions (i am a registered breeder)
