Hi everyone... I'm new to this and have my first bubby due July 5th. I'm hoping someone can help me with the pocket MCN's which brand is the best which has had the least problems with them?? I need as much info as possible. How many to buy for everyday use and washing every second day. Why are there less covers than inserts? Don't you wash the covers after every use? And which one's are the best for their price. I need lots of help... Thanks everyone.
Alright, my recommendations go hands down to Happy Heiny and BumGenius one size pockets. GreenKids are fantabulous too, I use them as night nappies on my 11.5 month old.
I have never had leaks or problems with any of these nappies. I prefer the HH as the BumG seem a smaller fit, I also like the wider velcro part and the extra adjustable snap.
In the early day, with the explosive newborn poo, it is normal to change up to 12 times a day, so you may want to start of with disposables, or get some flat nappies (old style CNs) and some really good covers - MotherEase are supposed to be fantastic, and I also have never had a problem with Maz-a-licious.
Ever since I started with cloth we have had at most eight changes per day, in most package deals, like BumG they sell 20-25 for washing every second day with one baby. At this age, I change 3-4 times a day (light wetter at the moment as it is summer) and have a night nappy.
Different nappies fit differently on each baby and if you have a skinny little thing BumG and HH might be too wide crotched for him/her.
I'm sorry I don't understand what you mean with the less covers than inserts question?
Some people buy more inserts and less covers because covers are dry within minutes of coming out of the washing machine, and for those of us that don't own dryers - in Winter time having the extra inserts is extremely useful. It's also cheaper. The shell of nappies is what costs the most, extra inserts are easy to replace and buy!
it can depend on your baby's shape, as some brands have a wider crotch fit than others. might be a good idea to get a couple of a few different brands until you work out whats going to work for you.
Some people do not wash the covers after every use, they change the insert and liner/doubler but leave the same cover on. Others change both every time.
Also with DS i am sure I have pockets that werent AIO and needed a cover on top as well - for those i could re-use the cover and wash the pocket and insert.
Hi Mumzy. Different brands suit different babies, so I recommend getting a couple of as many as you can and then once bub is born and you find out what suits best, buy those ones. Personally I dont like Peapods because they only have 1 snap on each level per wing, a second snap at the top of each wing would help to avoid the top drooping out.
Hi, Thanks everyone for all your informative information. I think I might go for the idea of disposables for the first month or two... Then I will get some trial packs to pick out what suits me best.
All your advice was great and I'm so glad I joined! THANKS SO MUCH everyone.
I have tried quite a few pocket nappies but find that the BumGenius and Greenkids Anytimes are the most reliable, even when DS was very young and doing the explosive poos their containment was brilliant. Their definitely worth the investment.
We also used disposables for the first few months because her poos were just so runny and gross. But for MCNs, we have been using Hautes and Happy Heinys. They're a really good fit on her and they seal nicely around her skinny chicken legs. We've also got Bumgenius, but to be honest, I dont really like them - they dont seem to clean very well for us and the tabs went all shabby really quickly.
Minilalas are soooo cute! I love the colours and fabrics!
I'm new to cloth as well. My DD is 12 months old and we have some BG's and itti bitii's. The BG's are great for at home use as they are quite bulky and the itti's are better for under clothing, but both have not leaked so far. At night I use BBH bamboo with a cover but have used BG's (two microfibre inserts) with no problem, other then bubba being able to move around easily!! I would definately recommed getting 1 of each of a couple of different syles and seeing what you like at the end of a week, keep in moind though as bubba grows and changes shape, the fit of a nappy changes. Most nappies can accomodate this though.
