DD's Weird Sleeping - Light And Heavy

I often come here and whinge about how DD's 3-hour morning nap is sometimes quite frustrating because we have a noisy house and it means I'm often confined to the living room unable to do very much because loading the dishwasher can wake her up as can flushing the toilet and particularly walking up the hallway (wooden boards).

So how come those relatively quiet things wake her up yet ... SHE IS CURRENTLY SLEEPING THROUGH THE BUILDER MAKING A HELL OF A RACKET DRILLING IN THE ROOM NEXT TO HER?????? Yesterday, she also slept through a herd of tradies walking up and down the hallway bringing plasterboard in and out and talking on the front verandah outside her room.

I think it is because of the stages that she is at in her sleep cycle when things are happening around her. For eg if she is coming out of her sleep cycle and not in the next one and you flush the toilet then she will wake. But she will be in her deep sleep when builders are doing their thing and she doesn't wake. That's what I have figured with my DD. Sometimes a floorboard creaking will wake her or one dog bark and other times nothing at all will wake her. If her nap if getting too near dinner time and I have to wake her it can be really hard to rouse her. HTH

Fiona! How annoying! lol Charlotte is like that sometimes too - night time is usually fine, but day sleeps suck!
I have found something really interesting though. Generally, babies will sleep if they will sleep - noise or not. For example, if the vacuum cleaner is going when they fall asleep, they will sleep through that noise, or if the builders were working when she FELL asleep, she will be more likely to sleep through it. So if she is going to sleep in a silent or super quiet environment, the the noises (that will seem 'sudden' to her) will more likely wake her. Where as if she goes to sleep while you are unloading the diswasher or someone is walking around the house loudly, she will be more tolerant of noise during her sleeps.

anyway, I think KatieRabbit is on the money too about sleep cycles.
I really hope she gets the hang soon though - it is so annoying I know to have that great time to get things done during the day while they are sleeping to find that you cannot actually get anything done because they will wake up!!

Same here for DS; keep making 'continuous' noise while he is going to sleep and he sleeps through everything. Otherwise I can't go to the bathroom because the noise will wake him.

I still can't work out how Beth wakes up if I walk into her room at night, but if she falls asleep during the day NOTHING wakes her up....
And if she sleeps during the day, she won't go down at night till 10.30pm.

Now DP has sneaked off to join her and is also having a nap!!!

Ah well, gives me more time to hatch plans for world domination.

Actually, I think you're bang on the money about going to sleep amidst the noise. Seems that if she has seen the builders working in that room, said hello to them, done a few high fives then she knows what's what and is happy to go to sleep despite the noise. Maybe I should tape record them and when they've gone replay the building noises which will mask my dishwasher-unloading and flushing of toilets.
