Hi,
Just wondering if anyone has found a good product for acne. DS13 has a few pimples on his cheecks, not many and was thinking of some kind of acne wash but not sure which product to get, so thought I'd get some opinions from here. Thanks in advance.
I am soooo going to have problems with my DD who is 10 and already springing out in spots.
So far we are using the Clean & Clear blackhead face wash which works when she remembers to use it. However once it gets worse (and it will) I will get her to use a cleanser daily (thinking of something like the tea tree range from the body-shop) followed by Witchhazel toner. This stuff is magic, it's the only thing that worked on my pregnancy/hormonal pimples. You can get it at Woollies, (D ickinson brand). Then you may need to follow with a very light sunscreen/moisturiser (something hypoallergenic or just a very light non-greasy formulation) like the oil of olay one.
The trick is to use a cleanser which is effective but not too harsh - a lot of the ones that are available irriate the skin and IMO cause more problems than they fix.
Don't forget, if it is "real" acne, it's caused by a bacterial infection and the kindest thing you can do is get a referral to a dermatologist and get it treated before it causes scars. Hopefully it's just a few pimples and not acne starting up.
I think every person is different, and what works like a charm for one person may irritate another's skin, or do very little to clear their acne.
I didn't have *bad* acne as a teenager, just those annoying little whiteheads and red spots (but I picked and scratched and could not keep my fingers away from them, so they ended up looking awful as they scabbed), and I tried literally everything on the market.
I did find that sometimes your skin adjusts to one product and seems to stop being effective, so changing brands often helped a lot, if that makes sense?
I have heard nothing but good things about Proactive, I've never used it myself (by the time it started getting popular I was over the worst of my pimples, and my parents would never have contemplated ordering off an infomercial, no matter how effective it was reputed to be!), but a lot of people I have spoken to absolutely swear by it and recommend it to all and sundry. It is a bit expensive, but if DS's zits are a real bother for him I don't see that it could hurt to give it a go and if it isn't the miracle cure we're all searching for, you can go back to trying cheaper, more readily available brands.
One bit of advice is to tell DS that if his skin is burning, red or flaking, stop using it immediately - even if it is clearing up his spots. I used a Clean 'n Clear wash a few times and all the skin around and on my nose just peeled right off, my GP diagnosed a mild chemical burn and I had to slather it with some burn cream for weeks - no makeup, no sunscreen, nothing but a big, red, ugly nose!! It was awful.
