DD was told by the doctor on Friday that she has an ear infection and is on anti biotics for 6 days HURRAH on top of that she's teething, plus dp and I have had the flu all week and she's got a bit of snotty nose. I know of late that she has been cutting out one of her bottles during the day, just weening herself off it. BUT today she has not had 1 bottle.. just blatantly refuses it and screams the house down if you try and give it to her! Is this normal? Is it just cause she's sick maybe???? I just don't know whether this is right or not. I am praying that she has her bottle before bed, or im probably going to be REALLY freaking out..

DD had phases where she refused the bottle, but would still be eating. Normally only lasted a day or 2.

We would on those occasions of refusing milk give a rehydration mix (one for kids), just to make sure she didn't dehyrdrate..

i think it's probably just shes sick... things might taste yuky while shes sick so rather not have it. Hope it gets better for you. xx

I know DS went through bottle refusal at around 14 months - and he just didn't want a bottle whatsoever - but he would take a sippy cup.

Maybe try giving it to her in a cup?

Make sure she's drinking lots of water & don't stress I know easier said than done.
When mine have been sick I've actually had them refusing bottle/breast for days. DD2 had Rota Virus at 6 months & didn't have anything other than water for 4 or 5 days. She was admitted to hospital over night in the end, on a drip, but she just couldn't have FF. (I was taking her to the gp every 2nd day til he finally got that she was too sick)

If it goes on past tonight & tomorrow maybe take her back to the gp, but hopefully she'll be ok.

Hrmm i've tried sippy cups before with milk and she just goes off her rocker! She's drank heaps of water today, and eaten heaps of food... *sigh* just had a really tiring day with her!!! SH'es been a complete koala bear in 36 degree heat! and the tantrums.. oh god don't get me started! She pinched me this morning and pulled this face at me like HA HA...

Maybe it hurts to suck and swallow because of her ear infection. I'm sure its just a phase- just keep her hydrated however you can. Jelly always works for Peter.

I was going to suggest that too. Ear infections really hurt. I know when Natty's ears were infected it was the sickest she'd ever been. Are you giving her panadol? My Dr told me to keep it up four-hourly because the discomfort is really quite significant.
Poor little one (and you and your DH with the flu at the same time! AAgh!). Hope she's feeling much better soon. I'm sure she'll be back onto her milk once the worst of the infection has passed.

it's perfectly normal when they are a bit sick. especially with ear infections as the swallowing action can be really painful. i would recommend panadol or such things to help ease the pain. maybe give it to her 1/2 hour before you want to offer it.

also if she does have a snotty nose and is a bit blocked milk may be the last thing she wants, they can also get a bit of a sore belly if they have been swallowing some of the mucous and can refuse to eat or drink.

in such a case just try to keep it really simple and offer water and maybe just some toast soldiers with vegemite etc. or mashed potato with a bit of butter and vegemite etc.

Thanks for all your replies girls!!!! It has helped ease my mind.

After a whole day of no bottle, she just had her dinner and now she's FINALLY drinking a bottle!!!!!!!! After a very long and tiring day with her where all I wanted to do was just crawl into a hole and not hear the word 'mum' one more time, I discovered she got her 2nd tooth!!! I was so happy!

Glad she drank for you I am sure she is just feeling miserable. I know when I am sick I sure don't want to eat or drink anything

Your doing the right thing hun,all as you can do is to keep offering her bottle,they will drink when they want to hun,when my two little ones are sick,they might go off their milk for 4-5 days.I asked my Doctor about this,and she said as long as they drink some thing,water,cordial,juice...etc...they can get by with out the milk for a little while.I buy the Poweraid sports drink to keep my boys Hydrated if they are really sick & not eating much as well,& I also put their Nuerofen in their bottle or sippy cup. Hope your little one is better soon,hun,this is just one of many stages they go through.
