Anyone txfd 2 embies at MIVF? Been told only 1

    Hi ladies,

I have been told by my RE that if this injects/IUI cycle doesn't work and we move onto IVF#1 in April that I am only "allowed" to transfer one emby back.

My understanding is that although it is highly recommended to have a Single Embryo Transfer, it is my choice if I wish to put back two.

Has anyone been in the position where they wanted to transfer 2 at MIVF but were strongly told that 1 was the only option? What are my rights (legally or otherwise) to decide how many to put back? After all, it is MY body last time I checked!!

    Hi Darily,

Well, this is a hot topic for most IVF patients. Our clinic is in Adelaide....
We fell pregnant 1st cycle - single transfer but miscarried @ 8 weeks. Second cycle was a frozen embryon transfer - once again single, it was unsuccessful. Then we moved onto a 2nd fresh cycle and asked for 2 to be transferred. Clinic nurses where not keen at all, but we had the support of our Dr. We were on the younger side for having 2 transferred. We attended counselling etc to ensure we were ready to take that extra risk. We didn't change our minds - nurses were still unimpressed!! Anyway, we transferred 2 and 1 stuck!

Personally, I think if you do the research, understand the risks and can manage you should be able to transfer 2. It is really hard to get them to do it though!

Sorry I don't have any info/exp with your clinic. But I wish you the best of luck!!!

    Hi Darily,
I went through two different clinics in Perth and for our first 5 IVF attempts we always had 2 embryos put back in and it was never an issue, with our doctor and the nurses happy for that to happen. On our last 3 frozen embryo transfers we only had 1 embryo put back in (through our own choice), with the last one resulting in the birth of our DD.
It might just be policy with the clinic you are going through but other friends of mine that have done IVF have been able to put back 2. I hope this is of some help and I wish you the best of luck!

    Hi Darily,

I am with MIVF, and we have always transfered two.

Is there a medical reason as to why your FS is pushing towards one ?

Ps - what is an RE?

PM me who you see if you like..

Each clinic has a different policy and even then each Dr has a different personal policy as well.

I can't speak for your clinic but I can tell you that there is no chance that you could get two transferred with my Dr. You are too young (as someone the same age I love it when people say that!) and on your first cycle.

I am pretty sure that you can't actually force them to do it either. You can take your embies and go somewhere else but you can't force a Dr to perform an procedure that they don't feel comfortable with.

I would suggest doing as much research as you can, having some counselling and making sure that this is exactly what you want and that you are prepared to take the risks. And then discuss it with your Dr.

    Good luck with your decision

I too am with MIVF and have always been able to TF 2 embies, when possible with thaw results. However i do remember that with my first cycle at Monash they perfered only one but then allowed me to also TF 2 at a time.

I guess they are staying that it is up to you, you can only follow the advice of you Fs

(i believe FS and RE are the same? Just what accrum people choose to use)

    GL with your choice

totally not with this clinic..but with our clinic they will not let any one tf 2 embies on there very first cycle most clinics are the same .
we do have 2 put back now but this is ivf 3 and weve been trying for 4 years.changed clinics and fs, but still we really had to fight to have 2 embies put back.
they have a poicy and like to stick to it so good luk with it try and talk your fs around but being your 1st try im not sure hun
luck to you after all yes it is your body and your life this was my point but still didnt help lol
and yes i agree the age factor is a big thing id say they think your to young BUT I DO REMEMBER HOW UPSET WE FIRST WERE WHEN THEY SAID NO TO 2 EMBIES I WENT CRAZY AND SAID I WAS GOING TO TAKE IT TO THE BOARD ,WITH THAT THEY SAID YES TO 2 EMBIES i mean its my money and body and im the one that will be looking after these kids so it there for should be my choice ..all i can say is best of luk and keep us posted hun

My FS always put 2 back in till they realised my cervix couldnt hold a pregnancy so two was just unrealistic. I went back to have a FET done last yr and my FS said why not put 2 back and I had to say NO just 1 LOL ,
This is with MIVF, never had a problem with the number but think it is a FS RE thing that they and the patient decide on.

    Hi Darily,
DH and I are in our early 30's and started IVF at MIVF due to male factors. When we started our FS recommended very strongly that we only put one back, given that we were relatively young and with known probs that the ICSI should overcome - she figured we had a good chance of success of falling pg, and they really do prefer single pgs. We did that for a couple of cycles. After no success I pushed to have two put back - and given that we had already had a few unsuccesful cycles, she agreed. We had two transfers with two embies - the second resulted in this pg (single pg).

I think that different FS will have a different mindset, and it will also depend on things such as age, situation (we were also traveling a large distance so our FS understood that for us getting pg on an earlier cycle would be good!), health etc. However there is a strong push to only put one back - given the higher risks associated with multipuls. Do the research and be fully prepared for the risks if you go ahead with putting two back.

If you are not having any luck, seek a second opinion from another FS at MIVF - see what they say.

    Good luck
    FG

    Hi there,

My first FS recommended 1 but I know if I pushed he would be o.k. with 2. I ended up following his advice for our 1st cycle. In the natural FET we decided 2 but weren't successful with both of these. I then changed FS who again recommended 1 and was very strong about this as he had had experience with people having triplets from 2 embies transferred. Take into consideration how tiny I am, my "youthfulness", health and that twins run in both of our families. Again I ended up listening to him and had 1 fresh transfer and am now waiting for our girl to arrive.

    Good luck to you.
