First haircut

DD is in need of a haircut. Her fringe is almost in her eyes. I've started looking around at hairdressers and didn't realise it could be so expensive! On average it looks like it'll cost me about $12! I had heard that most hairdressers to first haircuts for free for just a few dollars but it appears that this isn't the case!
I would cut it myself but due to the amount that 1 year olds move around (she turns 1 on the weekend), I'm scared of it turning out crappy. I could try to do it when she's asleep but I still don't feel confident doing it myself.

Can you please tell me about your expeience with your child's first haircut and how old they were, did you go to a hairdresser or do it yourself? If you went to a hairdresser, how much did you pay?

most of the salons around here do it for $3. What you do.. head into a salon and ask their apprentice to do it, most of the time u can get it done for free. $12 is beyond rediculous.

If not, if you are comfortable enough, do it yourself. Use the top of the eyebrow as your guide and take it nice and slow as kiddies tend to move alot. Cut it just above the eyebrow. Its better that you get practice doing it yourself as kids fringes grow very quickly.

The youngest i have ever done, he was about 1.5-2 years old and that was a full head cut.

I got DS' cut at a hairdresser on the weekend and it was $12 - he is 3.
They go by age, so a 1yo would be cheaper but I dont know how much.

DS had his first haircut at 18 months and I got my Aunty to do it, but he cried and moved around way too much. He did the same thing the first time at the hairdresser too, but hes been another 2 times since then and settled down a lot.

I dont think Id expect too much from the first time, they dont know whast going on.

The cheapest I've found around here is $8 which is not tooo bad IMO.

we were charged about $5 for DD's first cut. Went back a few months later for fringe and got charged $15!!!! AND she botched it! And to make it worse, it was the week of Christmas! Now letting DD grow hair out and will be cutting her fringe myself!

I was only talking to my mother about this today - i went out yesterday to get DD#1 fringe cut and i was quoted $15 !!! - imagine getting all 3 girls fringe cut - thats $45 !!!!. Anyway,went across the rd to a salon that i thought would charge the earth,but she only charged $5......
Im the same as you - i wouldnt feel confident cutting it myself. Shop or ring around.....its going to grow back again and you will be in the same possi in a few weeks/months time. Good luck!

we took ds to just cuts (it wasn't his first, he had at least 5 hair cuts before he was 1! thats how much hair he has since he was born ) Anyway, the lady said they do kids 1st haircuts for free and then you have your 7 day guarentee, so if your not happy with it, you can go back within 7 days and they will fix it. Also, they had a dvd player in there, she put the wiggles on and ds sat there the whole time and didn't even move an inch when she cut his hair.

They charge $13 for children up to 5 years old (i think)

I understand cutting a girl's fringe at home, but what about little boy's hair? Has anyone had a go? DS has these bits over his ears....he looks like Mike Brady....

If I had a son then I don't think it would be as much of an issue as I would just get the clippers and shave it. I don't want to do that with DD.
Thankfully the lady who is doing it tonight only lives a few houses away and works from home. That's the other advantage, she can do times to suit the client.

Webster and Wood do it for $5.95 if they are under 12 months old and $10 if they are between 1-2 years old. My first haircut for DS was $17.95 at Stephan !!!!!!

.our justcuts was charging $15.95 for non school kids, and $19 for school kids....fringe cut or full head cut. Absurd.

At the just cuts near me it was about $17 for 0-5 year olds Mon-Sat and a whopping $25 on Sundays!

I have had all the boys first haircuts at Stefans for free and my local hairdresser will do DD's for free with a photo and certificate

That's crazy!!! I did DS's first cut myself, but he moved & it looked bad & I had to take him to a salon to get it fixed I think it cost $10?

Now I do his hair with the clippers at home (the advantage of having a boy!) I hold him still while DH does the clipping. (it really is a 2 person job if you want to DIY)

I do DD's fringe all the time as it grows so fast. I find it easiest to hold the whole fringe up away from her face between my fingers and cut so that I haven't got the scissors near her face. If you're not confident, just do short cuts until you have it the length you want. Really sharp scissors make it much easier.

I used to do DD fringe myself til I really botched it Now I just walk into any salon when it needs cutting (fringe only) and it is never more than $5. The other week I only got charged $3.
