    quick last minute but....

Does anyone know what the latest & greatest reading programme for primary schools is?
I'm attending P&C tonight & would like to suggest that the 20yr old readers are updated but would like to know what exactly it is I am talking about. Anyone able to point me in the right direction?

We used PM readers last year but just ot updated with a new scheme this year and because I was only at work for 2 weeks this year and hadnt started using them I cant remember what it was called. Damm placenta brain!!!

The new ones had suggestions on the side of the pages to help parents teach their children so the children got the most out of the books.

I am going to send someone a quick message to fins out what its called

I know the preschool directed said she thought there was a new one called THRASH (assume each letter stood for something?) but she wasn't 100% that was the name.

Will the school listen to the P&C on thngs like that anyway? No offence meant but at most schools I have taught at the teachers decide on that kind of stuff. You never know they may not have the money to buy a new scheme (or whoever is in charge is really old fashioned and out of date LOL)

I think its Alpha kids! Thanks Mrs Mac! Just sent a text asking as I really have no brain right now.

Mrs Mac- Hope things are going okay for younow. Term 1 will always be the hardest but term 2 will be much easier and the kids will be in the groove and you'll start to see many rewards for your hard work.

FJ- I googled THRASH but couldnt fins anything on the books. The ones that Mrs Mac suggested are both great schemes.

well seems the school is made up of 4 teachers LOL. I honestly don't like my chances its something that has been brought up time & time again but the principle has openly said that 1 its to expensive to change & 2 she hasn't the time to research it. But I personally think the kids at the school would do much better with something new. I wanted to have some decent information to back myself up. I might test the waters tonight & then look into as much of it as I can & see how I go.

eta - it could have been thrass

THRASS is a method of teaching that is replacing Phonics in some schools. It is based on teaching reading by groups of sounds, rather than individual phonetic sounding out of each letter. There are no 'readers' that they have out yet, so it's confusing because they teach this method, but don't have a dedicated set of readers yet for them to take home as far as I know. They have all sorts of stuff for classroom use though and there are a few catchy jingles that the kids sing to help it sink in.

Most schools will still teach phonics in Kindergarten, then move onto THRASS for year 1 onwards.

The school could have a rep from a company come out to show the teachers the new scheme after school or lunch time. Thats what we had.
