My poor cat

We have a 3yo cat named Moe. Well when I say we I mean me because he doesn't really have much to do with DH they don't really like each other.

Last year when i was in hosptial and away from home for a month Moe didn't really have anyone to talk to because DH was with me or staying with my folks. MIL was feeding Moe but didn't spend any time with him.
When I came home from hospital the cat went mad and wouldn't leave me alone even when I went to the bathroom (inside) he would sit at the door to the wash house and meow like crazy when I went for a shower.
I put this all down to he was distressed because we were away for so long - poor moggy.

Ever since, cat has become so vocal and so clingy he comes and tucks me into bed at night and wailes like mad for me to let him in the bedroom in the morning if DH gets up before me.

He has gradually got a bit better over time until we had those spouts of earthquakes (11 actual quakes since Jan) and following aftershocks. Now even as I type this he is on my lap. He talks as he comes through the cat trap (doggy door) like he is calling out for me.

Admittedly I love that he is clinging to me like this but I wonder whether this is stress related and what I can do to ease an anxiety he is just so darn twitchy now as well.

I really don't have any advice but wanted to add that my cat sounds pretty similar. My vet has even referred her to a behavioural specialist vet and she's been on anti-anxiety pills She has to sleep in our room, no questions otherwise she'd keep everyone awake howling all night. Our bedroom is upstairs and when we are downstairs and she wants to go up, she'll go halfway up and call out to us to follow her and continue to call for us until we respond. She also waits outside the bathroom when I use it! She won't eat her food unless we shake the bowl (like an ocd type trait I guess...). She is truely a crazy cat but we love her...it gets annoying but we're used to it. I hope you find some answers and someone pops in here with some actual advice! Sorry I couldn't help lol.

Maybe its just something they grow into? I have also noticed Moe is purring louder as he gets older.

Aw hun, I don't have any answers for you, but maybe he knows you need the extra attention right now. What a gorgeous kitty, he missed you and he loves you!

cat purr to calm them selves as well as when they are comfy. So if you think he is purring louder or more, teamed with everything else I think its pretty safe to say he is feeling rather anxious. Would be like separation anxiety I guess.
You can get medication from your vet to help.
You could even try giving him Rescue remedy for a start anyway. You can get that at the chemist & its just a couple of drops through out the day or times you think are most stressful for him, like when you are in the shower.

awww poor pussy cat! I agree with trying rescue remedy like FJ said, also there are some phermones you can get at your vet that are exxy but help with relaxing anxious cats. Its called Feliway... you can get a plug in or a spray. I would say get the plug in and pop it in a central area.

My kitten was like this, and we got a second cat and it made things so mcuh easier. Even now though, if he gets out of the cat run he'll sit at the back door and yowl for me. Or if he sees my light turn on, more yowling. But the second cat has made a huge difference, a kitten that snuggled up to him. Now both cats are 8 & 7 years old, they snuggle and sleep togther and I have less worries

Thanks all for your suggestions I would NEVER had thought of RR for animals I will have to pick some up. Christy I do like the idea of the pheramone thing too even though its exxy it may encourage him to stick to a particular area of the house. He is so cheeky when I leave doors open to let the air through the house (when its closed it smells like a camphour box) I always find him sleeping on the change table in the nursery on a blanky I put there. At least he has stopped sleeping on the snuggle bed in the cot the funny thing is he knows he is not allowed there and I get dirty looks when I tell him off.

Kaz - I have been nagging DH to let me get another cat so Moe has some company he always tries to play with the other farm cats but they run away from him or the old black cat fights with him.

hey Naenae!

we just had this discussion at our vet for our cat! She was hit by a car last night and although came through with only minor injuries her anxiety is through the roof and he reckons that the plug in 'happy smells' that you can get are fantastic! i'm going to look into getting some if she is still bonkers tonight

hope it all goes well for you guys and Moe gets some good vibes coming his way!
