HELP small gift for 9yo boy and 7yo girl, ideas?

We've got a family gathering on the weekend and I need a small gift (each) for a 9yo boy and 7yo girl. I don't know anything about their personalities or what they already own, we barely know them at all. I'd kinda like to keep each gift around the $15 mark. I was thinking books? I hate plastic throw-away type gifts.

Help, I don't know anything about children this age??? I've got no idea!!!

For the little girl, what about something crafty like scrapbooking or beading? Or HSM clothing or a handbag? Hubby reckons get the boy a footy!

Thank you so much feeb and ubba82 for your suggestions, they were GREAT!

I went to the shops today and I got the boy a footy - $25 (please tell your DH ubba82 and thank him for me) and the girl a skipping rope - $5. I am really happy with these gift choices because it is the boy's birthday, so he should get the bigger more expensive present, but I didn't wan the girl to miss out. And they are both active outside things that will hopefully be useful and last. And I came in exactly on budget! WooHoo!
