My 9 week old has started a funny routine, shes suddenly(only a few nights so maybe nothing)sleeping more at night,i know i know its great but i mean she will go 8-9 hours at night then go back to sleep another 4 or so straight, problem is shes awake nearly all day,i love it because i can spend more time with her but i worry this is no good for her development, she just wont sleep much during the day if she does occasionally it will be a 2hour sleep but usually its half and hour here or there and then in the afternoon shes cranky because shes so tired! Is it ok for them to have there sleep all in one stretch and then not much during the day??I mean last night she went to bed around 8.30 then didnt wake till 6 and then went back to sleep from 6.30 and is still asleep now!
My ds is similar and will have smaller cat naps during the day but sleep really well at night. He too was getting really crabby by about 5 o'clock as he hadn't slept well during the day. It used to stress me out so much as I tried to get him to sleep longer. In the end I just went along with what he wanted. This meant that he would sleep for half an hour or what ever and then I would put him back down when he started showing tired signs so he would have 8 or so short sleeps during the day and then long sleeps at night.
It does drive you a bit batty putting them to sleep so often but it worked well for us. In terms of development I dont think it is an issue as alot of babies have this kind of sleep habit. A friend told me that her son was like this until he started crawling and would tire himself out with all the activity. At this stage he started sleeping more. My son has recently started sleeping for an hour to an hour and a half but he did this on his own, just started one day out of the blue.
The good thing about short sleeps is if you want to go out somewhere but bubs needs a sleep you know that they will be up soon and you will be able to go!
1pj The long morning sleep she is having is probably putting her off the rest of her sleeps. If you want her to sleep more during the day, I would wake her, for her day sleeps, after 2.5hrs of sleep. Definately leave the night sleeps. Though IMO, her long night & that long morning sleep would more than likely be enough. I would imagine that if they sleep long stints like that, their sleep is actually of a higher quality.
I always woke DS so he was feeding no longer than 4 hourly during the day but would leave him to sleep throughout the night.
Are you trying to re settle her after her day naps? Maybe she would sleep longer with a bit of re settling, If that's what you want her to do of course. Keep in mind that they have a 45 minute sleep cycle. DS always needed to be re settled.
