We introdcued it at about 5ish months I think, just a Heinz Baby Basics training cup I think its vcalled, with handles and a non-spill thing, they have to suck to get anything out. It isn't too hard either, jazz got the hang of it pretty quickly, and it hasn't spilled once. The spout is fairly soft, but since she has teeth and chews on it we didn't want it too soft, and she hasn't bitten it yet.
We just fill it up with water and let her have it for the day. She used to just suck the water out and the dribble it everywhere (lol, that became a game...), but we still offered it at every solid feed, and throughout the day and now she drinks a whole cup throughout the day, we just leave it on the floor with her and she'll find it when she's thirsty, or we'll offer her some if she hasn't had a drink in a while.
We introduced it around 4ish months - mainly for constipation issues - to see if we could help that part of it with more water.
And we just had a tommee tippee cup thing with a hard spout that she just sucked on - she couldn't grasp the handles yet, so we held it up for her.
Now she has a pigeon cup - but has a straw attachment on it, and has had that since about 4 months - so I skipped the teats part completely. She can suck on the straw quite well (even though its recommended from 1) and doesn't have any leakage problems usually. Unless she's playing around.
I got a Tommee Tippee one from Woolies and it has the soft spout, it's like a teet you would get with a bottle (softer actually) I'm sure it said it was a non spill one, but if you tip it upside down it does dribble out. DS has more fun chewing on it more than anything, but I think it is because he is teething.
It has handles as well, and I think it was somewhere around $14-$16 (can't quite remember because I was looking at a different brand and one was $14, the other $16)
We started at about 4 or 5 months. DS1 started with a soft-spout top on a mag-mag cup. DS2 started with a take and toss sippy cup! I don't think it makes a lot of difference which one you start with.
ohhh I could write an essay on cups! In my 5 years of parenting I have brought so many I could probably but a cheap car...
nuby. This is what Ashton has. Actually I didn't use it with my first 2, it was discovered while on sale for $8. Handles and a soft non spill spout. Ashton started with the heinz one but he couldn't suck it out, it was too hard for him, plus then you have the extra bits which are a pain. The Nuby one is just one bit, you unscrew the lid and fill it up. Haven't had a leak yet and he can drink from it which is great. It has a teat like soft spout. The extra spouts are a 2 pack for $9 so not expensive at all. He has had his since 5 months (so almost 3 months) and he hasn't needed a new spout yet.
I just want to warn you agains the ones with the plastic valves that go in and out. I used one with Chase and one day I went to clean it as per usual and and I pulled it out and it was mouldy and I could NOT get it clean. Yuck!
we have a tomme tippy one with a soft spout that is ment to be easy for breast feed babies to use, its the third one ive bought, the other two she couldnt get the hang of, i probably intoduced it abit late, and she still hasnt got the hang of this one. she can drink out of a normal cup but i hold the cup other wise it would be early bath time! i offer it every meal time but none gets drunk! i guess she will get the hang of it eventually! In the mean time i just give her a drink out of my cup!
NUBY is the best (IMO) Cohen loves it and has used it since about 7mths, it has a soft silicon spout. It also is free of that nasy chemical that they put in plastic so thats the reason I tried it.... I reccomend you try it too.
Thanks everyone for your responses. I decided to bite the bullet yesterday and got the Nuby.. It's been an instant hit with DS. I am so surprised that on the first go he knew exactly what to do with it.. both hands on it and straight in the mouth. DS is breastfed so no bottles and he took to it like a duck to water..
I have found the MAG-MAG cup the EASIEST to get baby to drink out of.. Jorda is now 7 months and we have been using it since 5 months.. So easy as its a nice teat and its great for baby to get used to as well. And it has a staw later as well.
