DD is so very constipated wdid?? HELP - she is hysterical
DD needs to poop .. really badly .. the last few days she has just sharted alot ..and in alot of pain ..
I have given her brown sugar and water , and its done nothing ...
Also i have given her a massage to relieve consiptation .. once yesterday and twice today , I cant do it anymore than twice in a day so now i need to try something else ...
I massaged her before her nap and she woke about 25 mins after in pain and smelling of poo .. i thought she had done it ... but it was only a little nugget
as i was massaging her again i could see the poo trying to come out ... and she would push and grunt to get it out but it would budge ..
i have held her upo right for gravity to help .. but nothing ..
she keeps pushing but nothing happens .. her bottom is so very red and sore ...
I thought about a laxative , but IME coloxal doesnt work well ... and a suppositry , i dont have any one me but if the poo is just there i dont think it would go in ..
how long do i leave it before i go to the docs ... its been well over a week but she has been doing nuggets so im not sure if thats classed as a poo or not in their eyes ...
HELP ... my poor dd is screaming soo much !!
oh she is 8 mths old , so i dont know if i can really give her anything too strong ...
THis is exactly what happened to my DD at the same age. It was terrible.
I gave her prunes soaked in warm water, let her drink the water and gum the softened prunes and I think they did the trick.
To get the poo out asap, we had a nice bath together which calmed her, I bf her in the bath and held her across my chest with her knees up which helped as it *TMI* opened her bowel. Then (again *TMI*) I used a baby wipe and helped out the poo as it was coming out.... it was really traumatic for her to poo so I was gently trying to do all I could to get it out. Poor baby! We managed to turn a real corner after that.
I have heard that the brown sugar can be more of a problem than a help... I will try to find the link but in the meantime, I hope what I went through can offer some help...
ETA:
I can't find the link about the brown sugar but it was along the lines of - yes it will help a little at the time but will actually make the constipation worse in the long run. It is much better to try some other traditional constipation remedies such as pear, apples and prunes.
I should add that you can puree up the prune and water mix if that is easier to give to your DD. This is the best for the state of your DD's constipation at the moment.
In the longer term, try to avoid foods which can aggravate constipation such as cereals and bananas and try to get DD eating foods which help avoid constipation as well as drinking lots of fluids. (Water if FF and lots of BF otherwise). To avoid more constipation issues with my DD while we introduced solids I would regularly stew some apples/pears with some prunes and give her a bit every day. Sometimes by itself, sometimes with some yoghurt, sometimes with oats as a bircher museli... it helped keep her regular until her digestive system sorted itself out. At 16 months we no longer have a problem.

: more information.
I was going to suggest a deep, warm bath too. You could also try a little prune juice, but it sounds like it's right there so it's too far down in the bowel for any of that to really help now.
Massage works well
start at the top side of her belly and rub down in a L shape- sorta follow the direction that the poo needs to go.
Also we used to put DS in Jolly Jumper and it was a good way to get himto poo as well. The pressure used to help
He would scream for days before he would poo and go between 10 days and 3 weeks in between poos! It was bad!!! WE used to also get the brown sugar and water, prune juice and pear juice- but the massage and the jolly jumper worked the best to actually get the poo out- the rest just used to soften it enough for him. Turns out his bum was too small (premmie) so when he had one of his ops- they stretched it for him!
You can also get a product from the chemist- i think it s called lactolase- safe for babes around you DD age- but just check to make sure.
DD1 had issues with constipation (still does sometimes) When she was a baby we found that if she was pushing, holding her knees up to her chest and having the nappy off, but under her to catch it helped. She screamed the whole time but once it was out she was much happier.
thanks guys , she has since done another little nugget .. the smell is really bad ,so when i smelt it i thought it would be a big poo ... but it wasnt ..
We are going to the chemist when DH gets home , i also dont have any prunes in the house , i would have loved to tried that first ...
I gave her another dose of coloxal but nothing ... so thats going in the bin ...
so far today i have only given her sweet potato soup .. i hope the potato wont bung her up even more ... and she is having lots of water ...
she is asleep now .. so hopefully when she wakes we can have a warm bath to get things moving ...
this happened to my son when he was 5 months old. The whole little nugget thing is bringing back memories - I ended up having to give him a suppository, and he was able to poo some of it out (larger than previous nuggets) within 20 minutes. But I knew there'd be way more than that in there, so I continued the massage and warm baths etc over the next few days, and he ended up having one more suppository the next day to move things along. Once he got the hard nuggety bits out (and there was quite a lot of it, unfortunately) the rest of it went from plasticine texture to normal consistency within a couple of days.
It is so distressing for them - I remember he hated to sit down he wanted to be held upright with no pressure whatsoever on his lower belly
Coloxol will only work from the inside - so she will probably have a back up of rather soft poo once this one is gone.
If she needs something to work from the outside - to get that hardbit out - a pharmasist may suggest a warm water enema, supository or a gel type substance (Microlax is an example but I'm not sure if it is for use for kids).
Vaalia yoghurt if she's on solids. It's the ONLY thing that worked for DS after 5 solid months of severe constipation. I was seeing peads and everything and nothing they tried worked.
It worked in 24 hours and we have never had any problems since.
well she did a small softer nugget yesterday (i think i already posted that) but has done none since .
For dinner i gave her stewed pruned and she loved the taste so i had to be careful not to giver her too much ..
i thought for sure she'd go , but hasnt done anything yet .. and i dont know how to tell if its all out ..(but if its just little nuggets i doubt its all out kwim )
i went to the chemist and she said she wouldnt give me anything else other than coloxal .. she was really rude and didnt want to help ... i was going to ask for a suppositry but i was scared of her
I second the yoghurt, she has Jalna, just vanilla nothing special, its guaranteed to make jazz poo. A big bowl of stewed pears, no cereal or anything just fresh stewed pears, works a treat too.
A bath also helps, if you lay her reclining resting against you, and get your DH (or you, if your more coordinated than me at bath time lol) to bend her knees up against her chest. Some bicycling and circling can help, and the water should help her anus stretch so it doesnt hurt tooo much (same theory as birthing in water).
Hope you bothget some relief, its so hard seeing them like that
