Any way of knowing if its twins?

I was wondering if there is anyway of knowing whether you are carrying twins, before having an ultra sound.
I am 13 weeks almost and have had one ultrasound done when i was 7 weeks, however I havent had my second scan done, and i was wondering if theres any signs or symptoms which may indicate twins without having the scan?

Could the doctor have detected 2 heartbeats at my 7 week scan?
Would I start showing a lot quicker or have a much larger tummy than normal?
Any other signs that it may be twins??

Also what are the chances of having twins?

Usually a 7week ultrasound will pick up twins although sometimes its not till later that its picked up. Often with twins you have really bad morning sickness (but not all the time) and you do show earlier or have a larger fundus (top of the uterus) then expected for that gestation.
Twins run in families so if there are twins on your side of the family (faternal) you are more likely to have twins yourself. Also the older you are the more likely you are to have twins and the more pregnancies you have the more likely you are to concieve twins. Of course twins can occur even with no family history and when you young. The chances of twins increases after the age of 35 apparently.

    ohh, ok.
Yeah my fiance seems to think i might have twins, i dont know where he has got this notion from lol.
As im 12 weeks, and not really showing much.
I thought if i was having twins that id be showing by now, surely.

Also, there is no accounts of twins on either my or my fiances side of the family...

Usually twins need to be in your family and they skip a generation, there are of course times when there is no twins in families and people have them but most of the time if you have a chance of having twins then it is because they are in your family. As for the skipping a generation, I am a twin, but I wont have twins, my children will most likely have them if they are lucky. But also in our family is a member who is a twin and his partner had twins. So the skipping a generation isn't always correct.

I have seen lots of people have twins that are twins themselves. Fertility treatment also increases the chances. I also have a friend who has 30sets of identical twins in her immediate family and one set of faternal twins despite them saying identical twins do not run in families. She is an identical twin herself and also has identical twin boys concieved through IVF when they implanted one embryo.

    Hey first time mummy
I went for a scan on friday at 9 weeks and asked if it was twins. The ultra sound lady told me that if there were twins they would have picked it up at my 5 weeks ultrasound (so they can tell that early!) So if you had an ultrasound at 7 weeks - they would have picked it up then for sure

Yep, as I said it doesn't always skip a generation like they say it does. I also watched a report not that long ago that talked about the increase in twins and as you said Emmy you have an increased chance when having IVF treatment.

you would definately know at your 7 week ultrasound if you were carrying twins. I never had an early ultrasound and had no signs or symptoms i was carrying two. I even had a dopler (heartbeat) at 10 weeks and mr dr only picked up 1 heartbeat. I found out at 20 weeks i was carrying twins.

Try not to stress hun i had no clue until my 20 week scan and was so upset not knowing what to do. But if you are blessed with one or even two babies once theyre born it all comes naturally and you will automatically know what to do. I was never really the motherly type and was scared i wouldnt know what to do or how to share my love but trust me hun one your bubba is born you will be amazing and being a mummy.
