We thought it was a black eye :(

Friday night Dh and I were in the kitchen washing dishes and talking, Lachlan crawled in to join us and started to play with the bottom drawer. I turned to get him and he started to cry. I thought he had either shut his fingers in the drawer or whacked himself in the face. Anyway after a cuddle and a feed he happily went to sleep for the night. Saturday morning i picked him up out the cot and his eye was a little red around it, so i figured he had hit it on the drawer. All day saturday he would not settle, he finally went down for his night sleep and again slept all night. Sunday his eye now looked swollen and more bruising had come out. Lachlan would not settle again all day , we figured it was a combination of teething and his eye so gave him panadol .
Sunday night he went down again . He hadnt been feeding much at all over the weekend. Monday mornign i made an appointment with our GP as i just had a nagging feeling something wasnt right with our little man. I took the kids to there vacswim and Lachlan cried the whole time i couldnt get him to settle and he was crying in pain. I could not take it any longer so i rang DH and told him to meet me at the hospital. WE took lachlan to the emergency and were seen to pretty much straight away.
Anyway turns out it was not a black eye at all but in fact an infection which affects the tissue around the eye and can affect the eyeball itself and have serious complications regarding vision.
Lachlan was admitted and had antibiotics via an iv drip. We stayed in for 24 hours and were allowed to leave with some oral antibiotics to be taken for the next 5 days.
Thankfully our Lachlan is back to his normal happy self and the swelling and discolouring around his eye has just about all gone. All that is left is a rash from the urine bag.
I just wanted to share this and to say if you ever have the feeling that something is just not right ,d ont doubt yourself. I nearly didnt take Lachlan to the hospital because i was worried i would waste their time. I will never hesitate again.

We had a similar experience last week which ended up being a fractured leg.

I'm so glad your little man is going to be OK.

Awww poor little man! How scary, was the infection brought on by him bumping his eye with the drawer? I would have assumed the same thing, an infection would have never crossed my mind. So glad you went with your instincts and had him seen to before it could affect his vision.

Tan - sounds like periorbital cellulitis. Things can be so difficult to pick in infants, though, I think you did a goob job in acting when you did.

We had a similar experience last week which ended up being a fractured leg.
Willow - if you don't mind me asking - where are you from?
