    Talking DIY Baby Wipes

I had a bad experience with baby wipes lately- I used one, then put it in the little cup holder of the pram and then put my thermos on top of it. 30 minutes later I lift up the thermos and whatever on earth is in the wipe had managed to REMOVE THE PAINT from the bottom of the thermos. Not so happy about using them on Peter's bum, hands or face now...

So I've been looking for ways to make my own (not sure about using faceclothes, something just freaks me a little about that, go figure). And this one, although I have yet to try it, sounds very cool indeed:

    1. Get a roll of paper towels and cut it in half (so you have two rolls almost the size of toilet paper). Don't use a serrated knife (not sure why).
    2. Pull out the cardboard tube.
    3. Put one roll into a container that fits it fairly neatly, eg, round tupperware. (I suspect this could be the hardest part!)
    4. Pour in two cups of water and anything else you like (nice baby oil etc), put the lid on and shake around a bit. Stand upside down for 5 minutes.
    5. When you need one, open the lid and pull out a wipe from the middle of the roll.

It says be careful of moulding as there is no preservatives. You can add some tea tree oil to prevent moulding (is this ok for baby's bum??)

I am so off to try this!!

Sorry about the huge number of brackets. Can't seem to stop using them...

Sounds like a really good idea. I am fairly sure that tea tree oil is okay as long as it is diluted.

I too hate using baby wipes as they dry out DD's skin and gave her nappy rash the few times I used them.

Personally, I just have a packet of tissues and use a squirty bottle of water to wash DD's bum and bits, then wipe and dry her with tissues. If I don't have a squirty bottle handy, I just use get a bottle/cup of water, wet a normal tissue and use it like a standard baby wipe.

Get an old towel, and some old flanno PJ's and cut them up into squares, sew them together and turn inside out. They work a treat Just throw them in the wash with your towels each week! Just rinse them in the laundry sink if they are a bit messy.

I had a similar 'epiphany' (sic?) when I tried scrubbing paint off my hands with a nail brush for 5 mins to no avail, but one quick wipe with a 'wet wipe' and the paint was gone!

I now use cammomile tea and a drop of tea tree oil in a small pump bottle and cloth wipes (I brought some but would be easy to make if you had an overlocker or brought some microfleece). My DD also had nasty nappy rash and this really helped to calm it. I've read that you do need to be careful with tea tree oil as some bubs can have a reaction so just make sure you use sparingly and watch for a reaction.

Ok, going to try this out, we're going to try cloth nappies so putting the cloth wipes in at the same time should be fairly simple - thanks for the suggestions!
