    Washing a doona

    Help!

It's freezing down here in Melbourne so I dug out the winter doona and it needs a wash. It is a Sheridan cotton outer, polyester fill king size. Bought it last year.

It says on the tag don't dryclean. You can machine wash it but it recommends large commercial appliance.

We have a Fisher & Paykel 8.5kg top loader, you think that would be big enough?

Any cautionary tales on NOT home washing a doona...should I get it cleaned professionally or will I be all right? Any tips?

Put it in the bath with some shampoo and warm water. Stomp on it till the water is discoloured, then pull the plug and squish it to get as much as you can out, refill the bath to rinse and do the same. Then squeeze all the water out against an empty bath and hang on the line in a U shape so the stuffing doesn't fall all the to bottom.

I'm going to give that a go. Thanks for starting this thread Curly!

Does your FP machine have a doona wash? I have a FP, and it is somewhere around 8kgs (can't remember what it is now) and I throw our king size doona in there on the doona cycle. It fills the water to a high level so the doona is fully in the water.
I just go downstairs to the machine, about half way through the cycle and check on it, sometimes I just push the doona back down into the machine a little, but it seems to work well for us.
