My mil told me her friend has told her what ingredients to buy to make black icing, but we're having issues with dh's parents atm, so I was wondering how YOU would make it!? I'm having a go at making Jensen's bday cake early so when it comes time, I'll have it right on the day!!
thanks in advance!
(oh btw, I'm on a diet, but I'll take any suggestions!!)
With DH being a baker he says its best made with a powder I think! I will check with him in the morning cause he is in bed and ket you know! Good luck with the cake! x
I just used the liquid black food dye, when I needed black icing for DDs ladybird birthday cake last year.
Can't for the life of me remember the brand of it (and am too lazy to get off the couch atm), but it is that same brand that you get in the supermarket.
The secret to making icing black is to make it blue first, then add the black food colouring. If you just add the black to white icing it will turn grey. You need to make it a different colour first, blue is the closest/darkest.
There is also another secret when making red too as adding just red to white icing will turn pink. You have to make it orange first and then add the red to the orange icing.
Powder and gels are always better as it wont leave the icing too gluggy. You can only get them from cake supply places. Liquid colours you can get at coles/woolies inc black. But if youre just making a butter icing it still should be fine.
If you are using fondant and you also have access to a cake supplies shop, you can buy premade black fondant.
Best of luck!
