H*O*L*Y COW!!!!! Just made my first MCN

I don't think there is an smiley to show you how utterly stoked I am at myself right this very moment!!!

I just made my first fitted pocket nappy thingy and it looks cool!! Ok you have to hold it at arms lenght and look through your lashes to miss all the horrible stitching. Me and auntie Elna (my sewing machine) does not yet see eye to eye

    BUT

I can feel this is the begining of a GREAT relationship. I'm posting my pics tomorrow.

Actually, that is the name of the machine ... as in the make, but I love telling ppl that I have tea with autie Elna discussing all things sewing related (actually I sit there swearing because she won't allow me to set the tension) We can all have tea together, you, me, Elna and Martha

    Thanks girls

SO ... this morning I fitted my ds's little bum with my new creation and low and behold ... It WORKS. Yeah it got peed on I am however thinking about not doing the pocket thing, looks funny because I don't know how to add the elastic on the back (I sorta made this one how I thought, not following directions, because my english is terrible and I don't understand it all that well sometimes) so now the elastic is on the outside part of the nappy, but the inner part does not have an elastic, so it gapes and looks really unfinished. I am going to sew the booster (that is what I call a piece of microfibre sewn into a facewasher ) into the nappy. It's going to take longer to dry, but I think it would look neater in the end. I also have to shorten the elastic around the thighs, those do not fit well enough to hold a poo-splosion me thinks. I have not used velcro or snaps, but are going to be using a snappy-thingy. I just feel like the velcro will eventually snag on everything in the wash and with the snappy you have more control on how tight you fit the nappy around the waist. Also I'm going to hit the shops for seriously thick toweling to make them, really hope I find some in an aray of colours. I used a flat terry nappy and the quality is not that good. It unravels a lot and it's not as thick as I would like it to be. And then the wrap *sigh* it's 3-6 months, but it's to big. So I'm going to buy a 0-3 months one at the discount store and see if it does not fit better. ATM I am still searching for a shop that sells PUL to see if I can make my own wraps. For that matter I'm still searching for a fabric shop that sells hemp, bamboo, microfibre or any other fabric that I so desperately want to try out

*taking a breath* This MCN stuff is FUN FUN FUN!!!

And here it is (if you laugh do it in your sleeve )

That looks great for a first go!!! well done!!! PUL and Bamboo need to be bought online, you can buy the microfibre cleaning cloths from the supermarket or buy it per metre or yard online. Not sure if there are any South African sites but it might be worth looking, alternatively look into the American, Aussie or NZ sites.

MrsB - gosh thanks, lucky ya cant see the stiching
    Ubba - Thanks
Ali - See in South Africa lays my problem I can't FIND any store that sells online here and importing works out extreamly exxy. Not the product, but the actual cost of the postage. Like say the product cost 30$ AUS, the postage will work out about the same and that is TOOOO expensive for me. Then I can just buy the already made nappies here, but then again, they are also too expensive. I have however not started looking in the USA, but not very hopefull. Our exchange rate sucks balls. Currently I am buying the microfibre from the supermarket, I get 4 boosters out of one cloth.
LucaJack'sMum - Thanks, you should see me I'm positively sickening with selfadmiration!!!

I just wanted to clear up something ... about importing nappies. I can buy a AIO nappy here for about R165.00. Just to put that in perspective here is a calculation:
I can order a basix nappy from Ali's Cushie Tushies (BTW they look so great, I wanna) at the price of 27 AUS$, that is R 174.00 current exchange rate, and then it has not yet been posted.
This one I made for about R30.00
    See where I'm getting at?
So if I get the right fabrics it might work out about R50.00 + a wrap of R12.00 = R62.00 which is MUCH cheaper than R 165.00 or R174 + postage.

I have made my second one just yesterday *pat self on back* (I'll load a pic later today) It has a polarfleece outer and a terry towel inner. It's a pocket-fitted nappy thingy. Better than the first one and works better also. I have to alter my pattern a bit. It's a bit on the narrow side inbetween the legs, does not cover like I would have thought it would.

I think I need a serger though Zig-zag is just not the same and my mom burned her serger's machine out. I was covered in terry towel fluffies

BUT DH said I can order the Jalie Pattern from Canada Don't know if you guys know that pattern - google it.

I know I can get them free off the internet, but my idea is to make these nappies for re-sale and you are not allowed to distribute free-pattern-nappies. AND the Jalie pattern has the pattern for a AIO (pocket or not), fitted nappy and diper cover in all sizes. Just makes more sence to me. I still have to find a place in South Africa that sells PUL. Looked at ordering it from Wazoozle or whats-its-name, but that is not cost effective.

Ren - I challenge you - finish that NAPPY!!! (although by the look of the rate you are recieving fluff-mail, Mel might be mad that you have "taken your business elsewhere" ) I have also sewed DS some camo-pants and are going to finish dd's camo-pants over the weekend. I did some sewing for DH and some alterations for our kitchen-staff's overalls. And the bug has bitten me BIG TIME. I bought a pattern for a romper that I want to make for DS and I want to sew myself some pj's (although I can buy them cheaper at the discount store)
