    virus with swollen eyes?

    hi all,

Pip currently has, according to the GP, a "virus".

    His symptoms are
    • snotty nose
    • swollen eyes
    • cough
    • no temp?
    • Possibly 2 spots at the top of his jaw (about a 50c coin, red & in line between eye & top of ear) on sunday night

We've been told to wash his eyes 3 times a day or as needed (just water, not baby shampoo like we had previously with conjuctivitis)

The doc hasn't given us any indications as to what it might be, other than Pip having the whole week of CC and that he was infectious. He is waking during the night, I think in pain, and drinking a lot (hurrah!). Mumps weren't mentioned (my DH took Pip to the docs and doesn't ask as many questions as I do!).

Are there any current bugs doing the rounds that fit this "virus"? BetterHealth suggests mumps but ...

So many kids in DS kinder & their siblings have a virus that came with a gross cold, swollen eyes, nausea (i had it, i felt soooo queezy all day), and temps on and off.

Now boths kids have an ear infection, and a horrible cold.

The viral part has lasted maybe 2-3 days?

    doctors and viruses

the doctor probably doesnt even know what virus your poor little one has, and he is probably thinking along the tracks of, that to take a swab and get tested, by the time the results are available, the virus would have gone and your kid will be better.
As viruses can't be treated with antibiotics he wouldn't have prescribed anything except panadol and rest and plenty of fluids. I guess HOPEFULLY if he thought it was serious he would have looked in to it more...???

Sounds like a form of the common cold (rhinovirus), but there are a heap of childhood viruses out there... how are his stools? it could be adenovirus?

if any rashes or swelling occurs i would definately get him straight back to the doctor.

also if his cough worsens then go back too. its better to be safe than sorry,,, and a second opinion never hurt anyone!

In any case I hope your little one gets better soon!!!

there was one runny poo on the saturday, rather nasty.

Interestingly I've just thrown up twice. Hope I'm not getting it.

    Thanks ladies.

ETA - he's a good doctor, takes the holistic approach and doesn't prescribe unless other approaches haven't worked.

Poor Pip! I hope he is getting better (and that you didn't catch it!).
Was just going to suggest using saline for his eyes instead of plain water - aparently saline (specific eye-saline from the chemist - very cheap) is more in line with our tears and therefore it is less irritating than plain water.
    Hope all's better soon.
