I've been meaning to get myself a set of make-up brushes for years, and every time I see a set on those deal websites I want to get one, but then I end up wondering if they are good quality or not... the same with all the ones I see in Priceline. What should I look for to know if it is good quality? About how much should I expect to pay? Am I better off getting a set, or just a few basic ones (I wear mascara, eye-shadow & eye-liner daily, but only add foundation and lipstick in every so often)... Do I need more than one of a particular type (i.e. eye-shadow brush?)
I bought a heap the other day from target, the are the NP brand and they are awesome! I think they were about $14 each but double ended. I have a foundation brush, all over eye shadow brush, blending eyeshadow brush (dome shaped), lip brush and bronzed brush. I use all of them. Check out a few make up tutorials on you tube with the sort of make up that you wear and they should show you what brushes you will need. I don't think it's worth buying the sets because unless it is a top of the range one, it's normally full of crap that you won't use.
I love my Body Shop brushes - I've had them about 10 years now and they're still going strong. Get a couple of really good eye shadow brushes and find out what you can do with them and see if you like the way the brushes feel when you apply before buying more.
I got my brushes off ebay. Fairly certain they only cost me about $40 for a full set of brushes and they are great. I've used them not just for myself, but also when doing make up jobs (weddings, formals, publicity events) and they have done me well. You really don't need to pay a fortune for good brushes and often with the bran name brushes, you are paying for the brand not the brush.
I've had body shop ones for around ten years too and they are still the best ones I have. Nutrimetics ones are terrible. Napoleon ones would be awesome but I can't justify spending that much money on them. Haven't seen the Napoleon ones from target but they might be the go. I only really use eye shadow and blush ones. Foundation one I use rarely.
The most important thing is that you need synthetic fibers for applying wet makeup such as concealed, liquid foundation liquid eye liner and lip stick and natural fibers for applying powder such as blush, eye shadow bronzed etc. To care for your natural fibre brushes soak them in baby shampoo- they are hair so need a nice gentle shampoo and lay them out flat to dry. If you take care of them they will last and give you good results.
