I just had mine done yesterday. I had 35 cms off ther length, it was touching my waistline. Now just below my shoulders. Had full head of foils, treatment and blow dry and it didnt cost me a thing. My friend is a brilliant hairdresser and does it all for free.
She did my hair while our 4 year old boys ran wild and my 10 month old "slept"
otherwise there is no way I could do it, last time I had my hair cut was about 2 years ago. I love it.

Hairdresser - what is that !! LMAO.
I'm not sure either hehe... as a matter of fact I got my 14 yo DD to cut allllllll my hair off yesterday. I was sick of waiting for a moment to get to go to the hairdressers. I was starting to resemble a Wookie!! LOL So now it's short (much shorter than I would've liked) but I have to admit it looks pretty good...lol

Aww I must say I love the hairdresser... I get a cut about once every 7-8 weeks and foils every second visit. I have short hair now and to look good it needs to be maintained - I don't think it's money wasted when you walk out and feel good. Mamas deserve pampering now and then I think!

Funny I just booked one for Monday and haven't been since February. Trying a new salon this time, like the treatment at the old one just not sure she understood what I want. I'm not good at the explaining either.

I don't like spending a lot the hairdresser, even though they said $39 for style cut I'm expecting add on for blowdry etc

I try and go every 8 weeks but it's more like 12-16 weeks by the time I actually get around to it - I don't have much done though, just a tidy up and it costs around $30 (I think!)

Phew, after reading this thread I don't feel like such a freak only going to the HDs once a year! And LOL at getting your 14yo DD to do the job Tanya!!! I bet my 12yo DD would LOVE to have a go at mine!

I also wanted to add that my DH goes to the HDs religiously every 6 weeks. He has to look highly groomed for work. Infact, now that I think about it he would easily spend more money per year on his appearance that me! Easy, no question... ahhh well... doesn't matter, he deserves it too

RayRay i agree! I don't like to walk into a hair salon where the girls have weird hair like all different colours and black and white hair together and odd cuts etc (no offence to anyone sorry if you have that) but its just not my thing...it makes me scared that they will do that to my hair even tho i know they wont!!!! i like get my hair foiled (blonde foils) natural looking blonde colours and a trim as i'm growing my hair even longer than what it is (below shoulder blades approx) and just get it neatly layered a bit as i have really thick hair...

In terms of what hairdressers charge etc, some yes, are over-priced however i think of it based on time... i am in there for a good 2.5-3hrs and the owner needs to pay his staff wages for their time, not just the products so after all that they dont really make all that much i dont think... some do yes, and some would on certain products they sell also etc ....just depends i guess...but yeah i agree with they dont pay their staff much, my sister was a hairdresser and got not much at all...... but i will walk out having spent $170 and my hair looks bloody fantastic like i'm just about to do a movie shoot! i feel hot! so to me, it's worth it... however it's also a lot of money out of the pocket too, so thats why i only go every 5-6mths (if that!) .... i do need to get my trims done more often though!!!

I think for a TRIM ONLY, hair dressers charge too much.....but then and again, its their time and time is money....(ie staff wages)
As for DF's hair, it's a number 2 and i just shave it with the clippers, haha easy!!

PML at your post Renee My DH gets his ultra conservative banker's hair cut by the same woman (he won't go to anyone else) and she has punk hair and facial piercings! You wouldn't think she'd be safe to go to!

I agree, it is expensive, but you do pay for the time which is fair enough... as well as a heap of other things... also there is a hairdresser drought here in Melbourne I've heard.

LOL I actually look for the salon with the facial piercings and punk hair... I figure thats the way I'd like my hair to be, so they may have some idea.

BUT... in saying that the last time I went was for Mother's day & I went to an all organic hair salon & had a fantastic cut & colour. I have booked to go back and its only been 8 weeks!!!

i use to be quite slack and had a friend hairdresser trim it every few months for $10. and i coloured it myself.

but my friend had a baby about 8 months ago and doesnt do hair anymore

so after months of neglect i went to maurice meade in april for a 'splurge'

i came out with my long hair short. think Victoria beckham (posh spice) but with a deep plum base and under neath big chunks of vibrant red!!! it is so fab. so i go back every 8 weeks for trim, colour, foils, treatment and head massage and bottomless cappucino plus blowdry. it costs $165 each time, but as an image conscious gilr this makes me feel fab! DH loves it and loves how happy it makes me, so i will just keep on going.

I love getting my hair done. I have long hair but because I straighten it I need to keep it trimmed otherwise it splits. I just had a dark red colour put in with half a head of foils and a chunky cut last week and I love it...always feel like a new woman!! Its nice to enjoy the pampering.

good on ya Sonya! that's what it's all about hey... making yourself feel good and "hot!" I love feeling really good about myself and "fresh" when i walk out of there... i just feel like hugging my hairdresser but i don't want to do that!!

Before when i said about some crazy hair-do's that girls have, i think good on them! that's good to be different etc and it's creative, and it's amazing what you can do with hair these days it's really art & creativity isnt' it? I am probably a bit boring just having blonde honey and caramel foils in my hair and a trim but that's the way i like it kinda plain jane-ish! hehe

I could cope with punk hair and facial piercings, its mullets with split ends and random clashing colour that gets me a bit stressed! ha ha.

All this hair talk has got me thinking though, that its about time for my 5-6 monthly cut and colour..will have to make an appt soon. Cousin's wedding in August, so want to get it done by then.

On the pricing, I do agree that your paying for time and talent, let face it I couldn't do to someone else's hair what they do to mine and have it look 1/10th as good.
So I don't think *most* places are over-priced, just that I can't justify spending that much on my hair more often that 2-3 times a year, especially when its long, and costs more.

Renee you hair sounds a lot like mine.

Yeah rayray, i love the natural colours of blonde foils, the caramels, honey... rather than the real "white white" blonde colour KWIM? I cant wait to get it done Saturday! haven't had it done since about February so i'm due hehe
Whats your natural hair colour Rayray? My natural hair is like dark blonde, mousey colour you know that kinda colour? I call it "boring plain" colour haha cos its not blonde blonde and its not brown or black!! hehe
I have never dyed my hair all over completely (too scared what it may look like!) so just get the foils over...

Renee, mine is a medium blond, sort of straw coloured, the hairdresser described it as 'pastel, not yellow' hmm but this was the same guy that said my hair was curly becuase when I took it out of a ponytail it didn't hang dead straight, there were kinks in it......hmm

I've never gone all over lighter, but I have gone darker..there was the time I tried to dye my hair black at uni...big mistake, and I ended up with burgandy hair for a while, gradually becuame orange..and the when it got reasonably light, I tried to dye it back to blonde, myself...and 1 emergency hairdressing trip and $120 later I had fabulous looking slightly darker than natural hair

Blanche - I hate it when the hairdressers wont do what I want. I finally found one I loved, and I used to travel from home to Northcote (about 45mins or so) to go there, but he gave up hairdressing for an IT career I miss you Pete!

Thats probably when I stopped going regularly I think.

can i ask you guys a silly question?? cos i've actually been thinking about this issue over the last couple of weeks. i usually go to a local hairdressers and have been going there for about 3 years. i love the girl that does my hair but no one else at the salon is very good. (i know this cos when she's been away in the past have gone to other girls and not been happy). the problem is, she is leaving to go overseas soon. i've asked around my friends to get a recommendation for a good hairdresser to change to. they all reckon there's no one good local at all, and all go to salons in the city. if i go somewhere in the city, it means i'll have to take my baby (once its born) with me as it is over an hours drive away. do any of you guys take your baby with you?? i don't want to annoy other clients or the hairdresser to dread me coming because of my crying baby, as i know some city salons can be a bit 'hoighty toity' about these things iykwim?? i'm pretty sure at the local salon they wouldn't mind as it's just a small family business and they are all really friendly, most with their own children etc. also it would't be such a big deal for my baby as it's only 5 minutes drive away so it wouldn't be such a long day for the bub. i'm not really sure what to do...i want to look good but just don't think i'm gonna be able to put in the extra ordeal of going to the city with the new bub. sorry to hijack the thread!!! just thought i'd ask as it's been on my mind, thanks gracie xox
