Quick question about dying hair!

I always put my own hair colours in(cant afford to get it done professionally as i change colours and styles every 3 months or so!), but the last few times i have, i've also put a few blonde foils here n there, i always just dye over them and start again. this always looks ok for about 2 months, then the blonde shows through again, so i have all different shads of blonde! lol

my question is, how can i dye over the blonde and make it not show thru again! i do remember when i dyed my hair black in high school, that my friend bleached the lot, then put a brown or red rinse in.. then put my permanent colour in.. i just cant remember how well that worked? (it was about 6 years ago now!)

if i put a brown rinse in then put my perm dark violet colour in, will that work?

i'm pretty sure you have to put red over blonde before you put brown on it or it will go green.
i remember a few years ago i went from blonde to brown at the hairdressers and in one of the middle stages my hair was actually bright orange- she reckoned this stage would stop the brown from fading and looking green. then she put the brown over the orange and it looked perfect and lasted. hth!!
