Vasectomy and Birth Control Questions

Not sure where to post this, hope here is OK.

We are looking at BC options now our family is complete and DH would like something fairly permanent. He has volunteered to have a vastectomy and we are wondering where we go to find someone to do this, do we get a referal from GP?? Is it a urologist that would do the procedure?

Also I have my own issues regarding my wonderful reproductive organs, I have hideous period pain and have had OB/GYN suggest I should be investigated for endo, also I get rather large ovarian cysts (up to 10cm) every few months that resolve themselves but can be painful. Does anyone have any suggestions for long term management of these. I was using the Pill but don't really wnat to spend the next 20yrs on this. I'm planning on discussing this at our 6wk check but just like to have some info beforehand.

Also has anyone taken the PIll while BF after af has returned without it effecting supply?

If you're BF I think you have to take the mini-pill.
I use a Mirena IUS. It's soft plastic and it has the same hormones as the pill but they're locally delivered not systemic.
It lasts 5 years but if you decide to get it removed your GP can do it (you need an ob to put it in). Once it's removed you can fall pregnant in the same cycle so if you need it replaced after 5 years you need to go to an ob who will remove it and put the new one in at the same time.
It can be good for women who have heavy painful periods because for most women it make thier periods lighter and shorter (I had a bleed when it was inserted and a light period some time after that but other than that I haven't had a period since I started using it) but on the flip side it can also increase the incidence of ovarian cysts.

My Dh had a vasectomy a when Olivia was 2 and then we had it reversed in 2004. We went to a GP and got a referral to a specialist. The procedure was a walk in walk out one and took around half an hour. This happened on a friday arvo and he was in a small amount of pain but ok to work on Monday.

My Dh, bless him, had a vasectomy in January. He got the referral from my OB, but you can just as easily get it from a GP. And yes, a urologist is the bloke that actually does the snip.

My DH had it done on a Friday afternoon, it took less than 5 mins, and he was racketting around with the kids no probs on the Saturday, all though he did say he felt a "bit bruised" LOL!

Apparently it takes 3 months or a certain amount of ejaculations to be totally "sperm free" so my DH has just done his sample to test to make sure we are in the clear. As such, I have continued to take the mini-pill.

I am still BF'ing my little one, Lexie, who nearly 7 months old, but AF returned for me about 3 months ago. I haven't noticed an impact on my supply at all.

Does anyone know if the mini pill stops you from ovulating?

dachlostar - I like the sound of no period for 5 yrs wow that would be a godsend, might have to check the cyst thing though, if I'm going to get them anyway it might not make that much of a difference.

Sarah i dont think the mini pill stops ovulation. I was told at the family planning clinic that all it does is changes your CM so the sperm cant live in it or get through it.
