Question Petits Fours for Birthday Cake?

Not sure if this is the right place to post, but here we go ...

What would you think of tiered petits fours in pastel and white decorated with buttterflies and flowers with ribbons and silk flowers ... for a 1st birthday cake??

    Found this
Flower Cupcakes and more delicious recipes, smart cooking tips, and video demonstrations on marthastewart.com
not quite what I had in mind, but doens't it look really cool??

See I was thinking about dd's upcoming birthday and when sitting down and making the guest list I realised that there would only be two kids - dd and a 5 month old baby. Now WHY do I have to make a child's birthday cake when there are almost no children?? And the picture I have in my mind is so beautifull and "girly" and to ME seems fine for a first birthday. I then thought about throwing a high tea party on the Saturday morning for the moms/girlfriends (guys can go bbq outside with DH - where they belong ) Instead of having a "kids" party for only two kids. I know dd is not going to remember or care NOW, but would it be very selfish to NOT do the kid-party-thing?? I would definatly have a candle and sing her a song and all that stuff.

She has friends at daycare and I am going to take some plain cupcakes and yoghurt for them as a treat and celebrate her birthday, make it special for her - take loads of pictures and do the party thing at daycare. She is still in the "babies" class, so not running around and lots of eating sweets going on there. I am not the type of person that is comfy inviting strange women to my house for a party - I'll have to get over it when dd is a bit bigger.

Would this be to selfish? Would you do something like this? Would it be too "out-there"? Would you think me a bad mommy for thinking a traditional b/day cake is not nessesary? Am I just lazy??

I need some opinions before talking to DH about it, need to get my head around what I want to do.

It's a great idea Nadine! My nephew had a tiered cup cake bday cake for his bday. His mums made the little cupcakes and decorated them to look like frogs and stacked them in one of those tiered cup cake stands. The adults loved them just as much as the kids...mmmmm cupcakes....
