    Question Progesterone Pesseries

    Hi all.

Have convinced my dr to make me a script for some progesterone pesseries as I have MCed twice in a row, and when my BT results come back soon after MC, my prog was quite low. They won't do any invasive tests yet, cause there has only been 2 MC's, but I'm thinking perhaps it could be low prog that is causing the problem.

My dr has said to wait till I get a +ve preg BT before commencing using them. Yet my BF's dr told her to use them as soon as she was sure that she had ovulated. I figure if I wait till I get a +ve blood test, it may be too late, and my prog may have already started to drop, therefore the implantation may not hold. ??

Would love some feed back if you have had any experience with these...

I know, I should call my dr and question him about it, but would like to hear from some more women who have had experience with them first.

    Thanks!!

I also suffered a miscarriage due to low progesterone. A pregnancy simply cannot continue if the body does not make sufficient prog to support it. Which was my case. I started on prog pessaries about 16 days after ovulation. I knew beforehand that my prog was low but my doctor (a fert spec) only put me on Pregnyl prior to conception, not the prog. I am not sure about the role that prog plays in implantation?? So we kept a very close eye on my prog levels up to and after conception. The pessaries are meant to help until your body produces enough prog but mine didn't through the preg. So I had 2 pess every day for about 2 weeks when I had another blood test. Then I started prog injections in addition to the pess. I stopped the pess about week 20 and stopped the inject about week 34! HTH

progesterone levels from the corpus luteum should be enough to sustain you through til the end of your LP (so when you'd get your positive test) - using pessaries before then isn't going to help, and will probably do your head in as it elevates your p4 levels to the point that, even if conception hasnt' occured, af will be delayed. given that you have conceived and gotten past the point where a pg can be detected, you don't need them earlier than that.

i'm assuming that you tested positive on or around 14dpo - if that's the case, get straight to doc and have bt's done at that point, and get started after that.

fwiw - pessaries are damn expensive, so you don't wnat to be using them if conception hasn't occured! it's a lot of money to use on a maybe - btdt with ivf!

Not that I know of and I very much doubt it as it is a hormone not a vitamin/mineral. It is made in the ovaries after the egg has ovulated. It is amazing stuff- (natural progesterone, that is) that also does this (off a medical website):
~increases bone density (oestrogen slows the rate of bone loss, progesterone increases bone formation)
~protects against breast and endometrial cancer
~decreases fluid retention. Fluid retention is caused by either too much oestrogen or too little progesterone. Progesterone is a natural diuretic which prevents the fluid retention that can be caused by oestrogen. Synthetic progestins do not have the same effect.
~normalises blood clotting and blood pressure
~helps maintain normal blood sugar levels
    ~lowers LDL cholesterol
    ~improves libido
    ~reduces anxiety
    ~improves mood
~switches on oestrogen receptors so lower levels of oestrogen are more effective
~improves thyroid function (progesterone makes the thyroid hormone receptors more receptive to thyroid hormone).
    ~improves adrenal function
~enhances myelin formation in peripheral nerves

It is also used in some cases of postnatal depression.
