To Doula or Not to Doula?

This is my 2nd pregnancy, but my first one was 11 years ago and I hadn't even heard of a Doula then.

Should I have one?

What do they do?

How much do they cost?

Where do you find one?

Any stories would be great too.

Hi Joey, There are a couple of threads on doulas Here that might interest you.
Doulas are professional birth attendants. They can help you to achieve the birth you want by supporting you and your family throughout your pregnancy and the birth. They'll help with natural pain relief and calm birthing techniques and will be an advocate for you if you go to hospital (if they know what you want, they can speak for you when you're in labour and may not be able to speak for yourself, KWIM?).
It's entirely up to you as to whether or not you have one! But I think there's nothing more important in pregnancy and childbirth than being well supported.
Not sure of costs as I've never looked into it myself, but probably everyone is different. You could make some inquiries and ask about costs, or you could find yourself a student who would give you a reduced price or may do it for nothing.

Hi Joey,
I had a Doula for my 2nd bubba and am so glad that I did. We had (I think) four appointments prior to my due date where we talked about my concerns, looked at research into VBACs (as I wanted a VBAC), did yoga, worked through some of the pink kit, worked on a birth plan and we also had an appointment where my husband attended and my Doula showed us ways that my Dh could help in labour, eg: birth positions and massage etc. The Doula will then come when your labour starts and stay with you until after the baby is born. My doula was fantastic during my labour, and after, I don't know how I could have done it without her. We then had two visits after the birth where she helped with breastfeeding issue. A Doula costs around $800 plus depending on experience and qualifications. Definatley money well spent! I found my Doula here on BB.
