Red face Buying a wedding dress ONLINE?

Ok so seen im engaged now im starting to look at wedding dresses...even tho our wedding isnt until the 20th November 2010 (lol)
I found the most amazing dress online which im totally inlove with and costs sooooo much cheaper then either being made around my area or something similar off the rack
The dress is made to fit (you give them all your measurements and any alterations you would like you just tell them and it doesnt cost anything extra
(obviously i wouldnt give my measurements until around mid next year or whenever they need them)

So my question is would you buy your wedding dress online or pay alot extra to get it made???

Or for those people who did buy there dress online... Was it exactly how you pictured it... where you happy or not???

    Thanks

I made my own. But that doesn't work for everyone

Go for it, if you love the online one. Get it with plenty of time to spare, then, if you need alterations made, get them done by someone here. you'll end up no more out of pocket that way.

Firstly, congrats on your engagement Nikki, and its never too early to start planning, weddings are so exciting!

I dont have any personal experience, so dont want to persuade you either way, but I do want you to know what happened to my SIL just so you have all the information.

So my SIL found the perfect dress in an actual store and fell in love with it. Later she found replicas of it online, and for a fraction of the cost. Like you mentioned, it was made to measure, and she bought it and was so excited.....until it arrived! The dress was not like the one she saw instore, the material was cheap, and it was badly cut. Needless to say, her search for the perfect dress begun again, only this time she bought her dress in a store, and was out of pocket from the online dress.

I hope you do what is right by you, and have fun with your planning.

My sister bought 2 off ebay (2 because they were soooo cheap!)
They are both from the same place in china... they look stunning on.. but you can tell they have used a cheaper material!!
my sister is absolutely in love with them and has picked one out to wear on her wedding day.

There was just something about this in the newspaper - the 2 girls they interviewed were very happy with the dresses they ordered online. If it is ebay, make sure to read all the feedback comments - don't buy from someone who doesn't have plenty of good ones.

There was an article in my Sunday paper last week about this - the girl in question got a lovely dress for $18! She was very happy with it. BUT I've also seen a horror story where a girl got a dress that was awful, no where near the right size, etc. I think if you are only paying small amounts of money, then it's not something too concerning if it's horrible - if your paying hundreds to thousands, that's a different story.

Oh man its so hard to decide... Thanks everyone for your replies..... i've been reading up really great experiences and then the horror ones .. I'm not sure if it'll be worth it for me in the end.... because of course i want it to be perfect ... and i think ill only be saying around $400??? If i get it made here... so im thinking the extra money could be worth spending...

    Unhappy

Congratulations Nikki! I too am engaged and will be getting married this November (I'll be 28 weeks pregnant for the wedding). I've just had a similar experience to Manhattan's SIL. I found a gorgeous designer maternity wedding gown online but baulked at the price of it.... I thought I'd struck gold when I later found the exact same dress (same picture/ model etc as on the designer site) on another site, claiming to manufacturer made-to-order wedding dresses for a fraction of the price. I went ahead and ordered and my dress arrived this week. To my horror it was totally different to the one they pictured. The fit is awful, the fabric is cheap and it looks nothing like the picture. Now I need to start my search again... I'm only glad I ordered it in enough time to still have 3 months to look for another dress. In hindsight I wish I'd put the wasted $200 (that was the cost of the dress and international delivery) towards the designer gown. I've heard of others who have had better experiences than mine buying online so I don't want to turn you off entirely but certainly my experience has been really disappointing.

Well, the one thing you prepare yourself for with the online one - its not going to look exactly like the photos unless you go to heiphy whose images are the dresses they make, not dresses they impersonate.

I was going to get their strapless corset dress - utterly gorgeous - but ended up buying a replica from another seller. Not much like the photo but still beautiful and it was delustered satin so I stumbled onto a decent seller at least. Problem is trying to pick one who is. Definitely check the feedback.
