Does anyone know the details behind marriages at the courthouse?? My friend asked me and I have no idea I didnt even know you could. She said she looked on the net but didn't understand it.
Um.. not sure about the courthouse, if you can do that in Australia (whether its a USA thing?).. but you can go to the registry office and be married. DH and i did that. You have to go in to your closest registry office with your fiance and lodge an Intent to Marry form (make sure you have the right amount of ID with you). Then while there you book when you want to be married.. which has to be at least 30 days from when you lodged the form and no more than i think 2 years (? its either 1 or 2 years). You can have 8 people come to the ceremony. The one in Sydney is quite nice i thought, you have it in a lovely set out room, can bring flowers or whatever.. and you basically have a wedding/marriage ceremony that you would have at a normal wedding at the registry office. We invited family and then had a lovely lunch afterwards. We didnt want a big wedding at the time as i was 7 months pregnant.
Thanks girls. Yeah, she is also pregnant (6 months! Yay not long now) and just wants to be married before baby comes and then have a proper one later. Apparently there is information on the justice website so I might refer her to that then.
Hubby and I got married at the registry office in Melbourne. It's in the Old Treasury Building, absolutely gorgeous! You can choose between the 8 guest room and the 60 guest room, and the charge depends on which room you pick and what time of day. Weekdays are cheapest, with Friday afternoons and Saturdays the most expensive. We used the 60 guest room on a Saturday arvo and the charge was a tiny $305. The 8 guest room on a weekday is around $185. Certainly a very affordable and simple option! We only had five months to plan our wedding, so were quite relieved to not shop around for venues and celebrants, or do any pre-marriage counselling.
