Naming Ceremony Poems
I've been looking in vain for suitable poems and have come across these so I thought I'd share.
Mother's Heart
I loved you from the very start,
You stole my breath, embraced my heart.
Our life together has just begun
You're part of me my little one.
As mother with child, each day I grew,
My mind was filled with thoughts of you.
I'd daydream of the things we'd share,
Like late-night bottles and Teddy bears.
Like first steps and skinned knees,
Like bedtime stories and ABC's.
I thought of things you'd want to know,
Like how birds fly and flowers grow.
I thought of lessons I'd need to share,
Like standing tall and playing fair.
When I first saw your precious face,
I prayed your life be touched with grace.
I thanked the angels from above,
And promised you unending love.
Each night I lay you down to sleep,
I gently kiss your head and cheek.
I count your little fingers and toes;
I memorize your eyes and nose.
I linger at your nursery door,
Awed each day I love you more.
Through misty eyes, I dim the light,
I whisper, "I love you" every night.
I loved you from the very start,
You stole my breath, embraced my heart.
As mother and child our journeys begun,
My heart's yours forever little one.

We are a family now, a whole,
Of which you are a part,
And you are just as much my child
As any in my heart.
I do not love you differently,
Nor would I give up less
Of all that life has given me
To bring you happiness.
There is no limit to my love,
No boundary you might cross,
No price you might be asked to pay,
No need to fear its loss.
We are now one, the four of us,
Windows of one home.
As long as I have life and breath,
You'll never be alone.

You are the rose about to bloom,
The color soon to wake,
The perfume set to scent the breeze,
The bud about to break.
You stand upon the lip of time
Alight with what will be,
And see yourself out to the sky
Across the open sea.
We see you vertically, a gift
Too beautiful to plumb,
And treasure all the years you were
And all the years to come

Life is beautiful, my child,
Though many things go wrong,
And you may hear much sadness in
Its strange and lovely song.
Though friends and loved ones die, my child,
They're never really gone.
Nor more nor less than yesterday,
In you they will live on.
They will live on in you, my child,
As everything you see,
Though it must vanish, will remain
Alive in memory.
Alive in what you think and feel
And dream and say and do,
For all who ever were still are
Upon this earth in you.

I often stand here watching you
For just a moment not to wake
The sleeping babe before my eyes
That your Daddy helped me make
Your breath come softly as you slumber
And I stand smiling falling under
The spell that you have cast on me
Since that day you came to be
I hope your dreams are filled with love
A place that monsters do not know
I hope that you can sense the pride
As I look down on you below
Tomorrow when you wake my dear
And beam that smile at me
We will begin another day
Full of things for you to see
And when the day has worn you out
You rub your tired eyes
I lay you down to sleep again
Then stand and watch my prize
Your breath come softly as you sleep
Taking you to dreamland deep
And as I watch my perfect child
My heart is not contained inside
It is the star that lights the sky
The little twinkle in your eye
The laughter that escapes your lips
The softness of your finger tips
So every day and all through time
Your happiness will then be mine
And I will watch your dreams come true
And cherish every ounce of you.

It's 3 am they're all asleep,
And no one's here to see
as we rock slowly back and forth
My Baby Girl and me
Her little head is feather light
tucked up against my chin
I hold her tiny hand in mine
and stroke her baby skin
The house about us creaks and groans
the clock hands creep around
She snuggles closer to me still
and makes her baby sounds
I love these quiet hours so much
and cherish every one
store memories up inside my heart
for lonely nights to come
All too soon she'll be grown up
her need for Mummy gone
but until then I still have time
for kisses and for song
Time for quiet hours like this
with her cuddled in my arms
where I wish she'd always stay
protected, safe and warm
And yet I know the day will come
when this tiny little hand
will be much bigger than my own
she'll grow to be a woman
But until then she's mine to love
with no one here to see
as we rock slowly back and forth
my Baby Girl and me.
