afiliate marketing online - is it just scamming?

So this is mostly internet based and seems to be mostly selling information (which I am not entirely comfortable with but the more I read the less sensitive I am to this iykwim?)

I know it will never live upto the promises but was wondering if anyone else had tried it? if it is just a scam? are there real opportunities out there? what are your thoughts?

can you explain it a bit more? I know what a form of affiliate marketing is, but i think you might be talking about something completely different!

From what I can work out I have a website with ads that if people click on and buy I get a % of the sale, my website can also sell various 'products'.
So I would need to have a website, generate visitors and hope that people are either interested in what I am offering or what the ads linked to my site are...

Oh I see... I think google do something like that? You'd need a fairly high traffic website I'd assume, and hope that the ads are relevant to your customers/visitors? Because you'd probably only make a couple of cents otherwise?

For something like BellyBelly, it would work ok because they have so much traffic. I know personally I wouldn't bother because for starters unless its done properly it can really bring the credibility of the website down (lots of little ads flashing around on a website seem really spammy and scammy) and could bring your own traffic down if people think your website isn't legit.
