    working from home?

    Hi all,

does anyone know of any legitimate avenues to take where I can make some extra cash from home. Not interested in Herbalife or Amway, been there, or would anyone like to start a brainstorming session to come up with some way to make extra dollars. Would love to hear from all, as the $$$$ are so tight it's worrying me sick

    Thanks Heaps

What about selling stuff on eBay? My mother has an eBay business and while it's a bit of work initially, she's starting to make healthy profits selling clothing and books. The books are all her own that she's bought over the last few decades or so and they sell really well, and the sales of the books aren't classed as business income as it's her own stuff. It's sort of like having an online garage sale!

Could the IRS classify the profits as capital gains?

My wife works for a company that uses her to moderate clients message boards and chat rooms. The particular company she is working for has recently been forced to layoff workers and slash hours, but there are other moderator jobs and you may even be able to find one in your country perhaps with local (country) clients and more reliable/steady work/hours. Something to look into at least.

Technically, I am sure the IRS would like you should keep records of purchases/sales, etc. and report them as earnings.

In Australia, the profits would most likely not be treated as capital gains unless it was a proper collection. It leaves the door open to claim the losses if the ATO tries to tax the gains. Anyway it is up to each individual to speak to their Accountant about what income streams are taxable for them, as it can vary to person to person depending on the exact details of their situation.

When i contacted the ATO in regards to what was classifiable as income, i was told it was basically anything that you considered to be 'income' regardless of the amount.

If for example you made up a business card to sell blankets at the craft market, that is considered income and you should declare it on your tax return

If you sell things on ebay, and you purposely buy things cheap to sell them (not your junk from around your house), and keep a list of proft and loss etc, then that is also income.

There was some rumour if it was under a certain amount, (2k or 5k or something), then it doesn't count, which is not true, its all about how you view it..

The man did admit it was a grey area, which all depends on the honesty of the person.

If you considered market research or mystery shopping or whatever as a regular source of income, then it should be declared.
