BW - woo hoo on taking the dummy away! Baxter loooooves his, and he settles so easily with it, it's going to be hard to take it away.
I'm away for a few days everyone, I turn 30 on Friday and DH is taking me to Perth for shopping, eating out, etc. All the fun things I like to do! Have a great weekend all.

BW, I just read about the PPO (Pantley Pull Off), which is in the no cry sleep solution. It is the way to remove the sleep association of sucking on a bottle/dummy/breast. I can share it with you just in case you find it useful, cos it's really gentle. It's basically let them suck until it turns to that fluttery comfort sucking, remove (before asleep). At first they'll reach and root for it, if so, give it back. Repeat until the magic moment when they don't fall asleep with anything in their mouth. She also says quit and start over at the next sleep or day if one or both of you get upset. It is, after all, the No Cry sleep solution. (Hmmm, I'd like to see that work around here!:lol: ) She allows months for these changes, so don't feel a failure if it takes a while. It sounds like your having success with little fuss anyway? But if you're feeling bad, I always say trust your mama gut, always trust that.
Oh my God, Nettie, that's totally what it looks like :lol:. And other cultures that carry, carry babies on their backs or hips. They think we're nuts trying to carry in front, and wonder how we can walk after months of that. It's no wonder so many of us give up slinging when our options are frontal. But we're a "sitting" culture, not fit for back carrying in general. The main problem I've found with our cultural differences is that fact - we're not active. All those other cultures are active and don't need the kind of solutions we need. Well, the MAIN difference would actually be they have many hands helping to bring a child up. We have two hands, sometimes four if we're lucky.:

Liam's had a 'gunky' eye for the last day or so, but it seems a bit better today. Hope there's not much to it.
Anyway - he's grizzling in his cot (have the monitor next to me) so I'd better go see what's up. He'll probably grin at me as soon as I walk in... don't you just LOVE being a Mum?? ;)
haven't been on in a couple of days as our internet connection died for some reason, but DH has fixed it now, yay.
Not sure how I feel about our group being split, can't remember who will be in what group, I know i'll be in the second half.
Don't know if this was a coincidence today or not, but my little boy went down after his morning bottle, woke after an hour so I went in and put dummy in and he went back to sleep for another 1.5hours, he did the same again after his 2pm bottle, and he NEVER sleeps like that in the afternoon, he is always really unsettled. So he is either, sick (he wasn't well for a couple of days, but that didn't make him sleep more/less than usual), learning to re-settle, or it was a fluke, i'm kinda hoping it was the 'learning to re-settle' one myself.
Anyways, have to go, time for sneaky feed. TTFN:p
Do we get randomly split? And how will I find my group? There are some of you here that I want to spend the time with, we should have been given a vote on a poll or something as to which group you choose :lol:. I guess our group was big after all.
I've given up for the time being on the settling thing. He started getting tearful when I walked into the room or if I said naptime. That's not the reaction I was looking for. He isn't used to sleeping alone so I have to take this really slowly. Ho hum. So this is what a day will look like if I relax about it:
7.30am - up
8.30am - sling nap
9.30/10am - up
11/11.30am - cot nap (goes in awake, but is so tired, just passes out without fuss)
12noon - wake (AUGH!)
1pm - nap (in cot if he'll take it, if not, on me somehow)
if he napped on me then it's at least a one hour nap, if not, it's another half hour nap
Then that nap is repeated for third nap (split into two half hours or a full nap on me).
4/5pm - nap in sling
5/6pm - bedtime routine
7ish - DH bounces to sleep
So all naps, unless they are taken on me (sling or laying in hammock with me) are half an hour, then he wakes. Our night sleep is fine, he sleeps and wakes to feed as he should for his age but his daytime is just one long dragging mess. He grizzles after half an hour awake, I still think that's too soon for his age, and if I put him down then, it takes ages to get him to sleep so I can't seem to pick his tired signs. I've researched the pants off tired signs, I KNOW what to look for - I just can't seem to see them in him, or if I do, it means nothing to his settling.

We have the 'evil hands plotting' happening here too. He has also taken to starting to deliberately swipe at his toys on his play mat and on his bouncer, he seems to get cranky when his hands don't do what he wants them to. It also seems that the re-settling and then sleeping for a couple of hours was a fluke, he wasn't having a bar of it this morning, will see what happens after I get back from post office this morning but I don't like my chances.
Fire I think they are split the same way as the pregnancy buddies, so 1-15 April will be one group then 16-30 April will be another group, i'm guessing we will probably all pop into both.
I'm a bit puzzled as to why the group needs to be split. I would have expected that we'd be consulted about this. Surely 'too big' is only too big if we all think it is?
Fire my DS was a 20-minute napper for a long time. it used to irritate me when people would tell me to 'sleep when the baby sleeps'. What, for 20 minutes? I think you're doing well to get Ci to sleep in the cot, even if it's only half an hour. I've yet to have dd nap outside of the sling. Lucky she's such a little one or my back would be stuffed by now.
Nettie we're also into sucking hands over here. And of course clasping them - so sweet.

Well dd has hit the magical three month mark today. I expect great leaps forward in her sleeping and napping behaviour!! The last few nights have to go down as her worst ever. She's so congested and her coughing wakes her up. Ugh.

Nettie: Got the hand sucking going on here too...which is great cause he sucks his hands instead of the dummy.
Nasty Mummy Dummy Removal Service is going well...hasn't had the dummy for hearly 2 days now, and as long as we don't get caught up and hit overtired, he's settling well! The amount of time it takes to settle is less and less and he's re-settling himself most times if he wakes.
He's no longer wrapped (though because its been part of his routine I still do waist down so as not to change too many things at once), so at night time, from about 6pm its bottle (he usually has an arvo sleep from about 2 or 3 til 5:30 or 6pm...we wake him at 6), little play on the floor, bath, bit more bottle, nappy, waist wrap, into bed on his tummy, and a little bit off patting, then off to sleep.
Then he'll wake anywhere between 1:30am and 3am for a feed, then straight back into bed, less than 5 mins of patting, then thats it til between 6 and 7....
Im so proud of him!
We are going to give some farex a go tomorrow night....he's constantly chewing his tongue, and I think he will enjoy it!!
Morning all,
Have been away for few days. Got wardobes in they are wonderfull. Still trying to get orgainsed at the moment. I have boxes everywhere in lounge room. I washed all of my 00 clothes and hung up in NEW wardobes on Wyatt side. He is only just moving up, some stuff he still fits into 000 and he's got to be near 6.5-7kg. Love DS wardobe, have moved DD old pooh stick of old wardobe and put on his. Even love the design of a few draws on one side and double hanging on other side. DD, and Wyatt's not so much. We went to spotlight and brought some wall art sticker but haven't put them on. Would like another draw under the draw already there, so will have to get builder back. DD and DS will move rooms when Wyatt sleeps in his cot, and can settle himself.
I haven't even tried to change Wyatt over yet, were still only in there for playing. Everyone here is SICK AGAIN. Wyatt is so congested I feel sorry for the little bugger. He seem to be back in routine again, which is GREAT.
DS who we thought had cold/flew has an ear infection, which would explain why he is beings such a princess at the moment. He can cry at the drop of anything.
FIRE: Is the room you put Ci in cold? I know Wyatt wont go to sleep in cold room, so we put heater on when he in there which help him sleep longer. But I would recommend buying the Ergo infant insert for the cost of $33 it will save your back/front. I couldn't manage without mine. Wyatt will sleep in his for up 4hrs along as I get up and guggle him now and then.
BW: GREAT job on taking the dummy back.
Nettie: We too go to town on our hand over here. It's like gold take it away from me and I will cry.
Oh well I better go, we were ment to go to SNOW today but seem everyone is sick will have to go another weekend. So it's back to finish orgainsing kids wardobes and through heapsof junk out.

Well first week back resulted in a trip to Sydney for training on Thursday and a very tired mummy!! I am luckythough, they let em take Luke to Sydney with me and are fine wiith me sitting in my office expressing and organising my appointments around expressing. The only problem I have had is that he tends to get fed more with his Nan than I would do. I think part of it is that DH's sister likes to feed him when she gets there in the afternoon and she didn't BF any of her 3 kids so neither her or Nan really get how precious the EBM is (i have found that this bottle only gets half drunk because Luke really doesn't need it so the remainder goes down the drain!!) I have had a chat to DH's mum and i think she gets it now. Also trying to train her to call me at lunchtime so I can feed him - had to have a talk about not only is feeding him a lunchtime something I want to do, it helps my supply and doesn't waste precious EBM! Luke is doing so well though - now into 0 sized clothes - giant big heffalump!
Fire If you only want to express to build a supply and don't want to increase supply, express 20 - 40 mls after a feed when you feel quite full. Expressing will increase your supply so I did it gradually (and regularly) so that I wouldn't take food off Luke and wouldn't increase my supply to the point where I couldn't manage it.
Have read all the posts, but tired and need to go into town to get more antibiotics (had mastitis last weekend and didn't get enough tablets for the 10 days). Miss you guys and it is great to hear that everyone is doing well.

Cos Wyatt is sick, my boob's were hugh yesterday he hasn't had a good feed all day and he was fast asleep. So i got out my pump and expressed. However what i forgot to watch was how fast the little bottle filled up. Was off in own world and within 4-5 minutes of me pumping away the 200ml botle was full. Opps!!! So i got out some little sealer glad bags wrote date and into frezeer with it.
So that boob felt good, just enough to take the hurting off still plenty left incase he woke up early. But my left boob was still acing, so on went the pump. I timed this one, it took me 3mins 35sec to fill it to 150ml. Again into bag into the frezeer it went.
I never really expressed with 1#DS. I did a few times when I was too sick, and it took me like 10mins to get 150mls so never bothered. But this time am going to re-think it so I can go out without no children one day. I was so proud of my self.
Question??? How long does Breastmilk last for?? It's in chest frezeer... And how long does it take to defrost??? what is the best way to heat up? In bottle in a container with hot water around it?

Hi Sarah, this is what I've always been told about boob juice:
It can be stored in the freezer for 3 months, best de-frosted slowly at either room temp or in fridge, ok to use for up to 2 days after taking from freezer as long as it isn't heated, and isn't allowed to become warm (so must be still cold when you put it in the fridge if defrosted at room temp) prior to being heated for bubby to drink and must be heated by using warm water, microwaving it will kill the nutrients in it.
It can be used for a second feed (if not all used) as long as it is kept warm between feedings and not returned to the fridge and re-heated.
Sarah I have been told that you can keep it for 3 months in a fridge/freezer with it's own door (IYKWIM) and 12 months in the deep freeze. It is best defrosted in the fridge and should be used within 24 hours. It shoudl NEVER be microwaved and can be heated in a container of warm/hot water ( i have a bottle warmer). Once a feed has started any leftovers should be thrown away. My midwife said if all else fails give it to him cold (luke is a piggy who will eat anything!). Yep - once the milk is in I have found it easy to express - 240ml in 15 mins during the day at work (and that is after feed and after expressing the other booby for comfort) - needless to say my boobs are huge!!!

Well we tried Farex tonight and it went really well...I'd been told to make it really runny, but having had 8 years experience of introducing solids, I've actually found thicker is better.
I made probably about 2-3 teaspoons, mixed with formula, and Benjamin ate most of it.
He did the usual thing of pushing most of it out each time as he used his tongue to "chew" it, then we started putting in big mouthfuls, which did result in gagging, but also swallowing!
Will see how long he sleeps, I doubt the length of time will change though!
Still...was all good...we are set to have "dinner" every night now!
After a week or so of farex we'll move on to some potato, then some pumpkin and broccoli! (doing fruit last as experience tells me if they have the "Sweet" fruit first, the vegies don't stand a chance!!)
BW - that's a good tip about the veggies... I hadn't thought about that!
Sarah - if you check the ABA site, they have the full list of safe storing of EBM - 3 months in freezer (at the back/coldest part of freezer). It's best to defrost in the fridge before warming, but you can directly warm the milk from cold or frozen if you need to. Just put the frozen milk in a bottle (ABA sells the freezer trays which are great for this) and sit the bottle in hot tap water (not boiling water or you may curdle the milk making it useless) until it warms up. Can take about 5 minutes for frozen or cold milk (just to warn you in case bubs is already STARVING and is screaming the house down like Liam does sometimes!).
Liam's given us the shock of our lives tonight by downing nearly 170 mls of formula! Was over the space of an hour or so, but seeing as we were struggling to get him to eat 100 mls, that's amazing! He's also been a bit niggly the last few days and I'm wondering if he's having another growth spurt or is preparing to change routine. I'm hoping this huge feed means he's about to sleep through more than 5-6 hrs at night (only does it occasionally now) or he's about to leave more than 3 hours between feeds. Either way would be wonderful!
I've also made the decision to stop expressing BM over the next couple of weeks (am taking it slow so I don't get mastitis). I'm very proud to have gotten to 3 months, especially when my goal was 2. It's becoming so much harder now and I'm only getting just over one feed a day for him anyway. It's costing more for the pump!

Hi. I have been reading some of your posts and noticed a few of you are unsure as to why we are splitting the group. It isn't because it is a large group or anything, it is so we can keep it in line with the March groups and all the groups from May onwards.
So the new groups will be April 1st - 15th and April 16th - 30th - but you are all more than welcome to post across both groups.
so we're being split for the sake of consistency? surely the best interests of our group as a whole should come before the interests of consistency. trillian, do you really think it will be so confusing to have one april group instead of two? i'm sure future bellybelly members will be able to work it out - we're a smart bunch after all! please reconsider!

Well the Farex intake is going well, Benjamin had some more for dinner tonight.
The dummy removal, not so well.
The first couple of days were good but I think that was cause I'd substituted the dummy with patting, but now the patting isn't enough.
The past 2 days have been awful...making ME cry cause I'm making HIM cry.
DH heard it tonight at full force and agreed, dummy back....put it in his mouth and he was out like a light.
So we have agreed that he has it for bed only...so, when we lay him down, he gets it...when we pick him up we take it out first :)
I feel a bit better now!!!
sarah the wardrobes sound great, would love to have big enough bedrooms for the boys to have built ins too.
shellbell glad to hear the 1st week back went ok, and I hope you manage to get your MIL to understand about how precious EBM is.
BabyWrangler That is great that the farex is going so well, I know from experience too that thicker is better. Bugger that the dummy removal didn't go as smoothly, Oliver usually only has his when he goes to bed or when we are out and he is getting tired, he usually doesn't want it at any other time anyway, just pushes it out with his tongue. As for vegies before sweet foods, totally agree with you, when I had Anthony he would usually have a chocolate or banana custard for his lunch, and of course loved them, he was a shocking eater when it came to trying to get him to eat vegies, Jordan, only ever got vegie's for lunch and dinner up till about 8 months or so (can't remember exactly) and when he started finishing his main evening meal and then wanting more he then got the deserts, he is now a boy who LOVES vegies, they are the first thing on his plate to disappear every night

I got Oliver to re-settle himself again this morning, so i'm hoping that once he has the hang of it in the morning, he will follow through with the rest of his sleeps. This morning though before I put him back to bed I noticed he had done a poo, so I start changing his nappy, just as I pull the nappy out from under him he decides he has more to do, we got in such a mess, there was '$hit' (literally) everywhere, even all over my hands, Oliver found it quite funny and let me know this by the huge grin he had on his face :cryinglaugh:
Just a quick visit from me.
Had first night without both kids last night and it was great, spent 3 hours with DH had dinner and cake and coffee then had drinks with friends, got home at 1.30am and DTD for the first time since DD was born.
Of course my concerns were founded - that is shame about the boobies needing expressing resulting in a sleepless night anyway :rolleyes:.
Sarah 12 months in the deepfreeze. Everything shell said is right about storing breastmilk.
Shell If your Inlaws think Luke needs extra feeds maybe try adding the farex to the EBM like BW is doing, save that precious milk. Can you give EBM in smaller serves like 60mls so that if he needs a top up there isn't so much wasted? :clap: on the 240mls. I only got 120ml on each express that I did without DD around last night. Will be freezing the last 4, discarded the first one as I was drinking red wine when I did that one.
Sharon - we've had 'poo drama' here before too... not pretty! Just remember, we have to do these things so we've got something to embarass them about at their 18th birthday party!! ;)

BW - sounds like you've reached a bit of a compromise with the dummy removal. Maybe you could try again in a few weeks...
Mgm - it certainly sounds like we're splitting for consistency. I'm really bummed because Liam was born on 17th - so we're right in the middle. I find it very beneficial to be reading about the older babies so I can know if Liam's on track with his development or get warnings about issues that may come up for us.
I don't think it will change much anyway as we'll all probably keep posting in both forums, so it will be a moot point... jmo

BW, with the farex, watch for constipation. I've also heard that limiting the dummy just for sleep is quite effective. And you can always do the NCSS at a later date should you wish to remove the association.
With the solids, too, fruit is good food for a bfed baby as breast milk is extremely sweet and therefore a taste they appreciate. My daughter drank my milk for a week a month ago when she was sick (cured her overnight) and she couldn't believe how sweet it was. She said it was like caramel icecream, although some days she reported it was less sweet, but still sweet. First solids in many countries is pawpaw, so that's what I'm introducing first. It also contains the most enzymes and helps their digestion. I can't wait until solids time! I'm doing infant led feeding which is new to me, and doesn't involve purees. It is also about how if you don't interfere or force, just offer good choice, the baby will always choose the perfect variety in the right amount for them and it creates a less fussy toddler.
How do you all get your babies to play on the floor? Mine still has a strong moro and doesn't tolerate it. At least it forces me to hold him, case I get lazy. Cos I did promise myself to keep him in-arms until 6 months and it seems DS was listening in utero and will make me keep that promise!
Sarah, the insert, how big is it? How does it work to help them fit in? Ci's feet push through the waist band cos he frog legs until he can straddle. That's the main problem I have with it cos he seems so uncomfortable with it. But I might get it and then resell on ebay or something. Maybe I will even find one on ebay.
Shell, I'll do that then. I've been on pause about it cos I'm not sure how to go about it. But I will eventually build a bank up with that method. if my supply seems to get messed, I'll just cut back on expressing.
I woke today with one breast full! Those who know my plight will know how cool that is. It means he didn't eat as much all night. We changed rooms and found that the room we were in had black (toxic) mold all over the wall behind the cupboard! No wonder he hated even walking in there. Our first night in the family bedroom and he slept like a charm. Woke to feed twice, put himself back to sleep (by moaning). Naps are better too. His ability to self settle is maturing, and he is taking longer naps and only takes 5 minutes to get to sleep. As long as he is actually tired. My kid seems to go against those rules "catch them before overtired". If he isn't really really tired, he takes ages to fall asleep!
Which reminds me. Do your babies moan a lot? Mum reckons babies don't usually do what Ci does. He goes to sleep by moaning! (ooooohhh aaaawwwwwooooohhhhhh) Mum said this morning that he sings so much God help us when he learns the words!
Toni, I know what you mean about massages and nappy free time. Also baths here, cos our heater sucks. I am now taking to sitting on a chair in the sun with Ci with his butt bare and his legs in the sun (good for vit D too, which is low in breast milk). He sits there with me almost still for 30 to 45 mins he loves it so much. I cue him to pee while we're there, too, and he does, which still spins me out. Good job on 3 months of bf, too!
Janine - just curious more than anything but did your DD BF of did you express? Also i am curiuos bout the infant led solid introduction, would you mind eloborating? Its still way to cold here in Brisbane bayside to have russell naked for any length of time. i will put him in the sun with out his pants but still in day suit and long sleeve shirt.
Hes also started on some solids as he has been real moody and seems to have done the trick

Didn't get in any shopping :( :lol: but ate lots of lovely food and wine, although I just hopped on the scales and I've lost 0.4 for the week, no idea how that happened. So I've lost 2.1 over 4 weeks which I'm mildly satisfied with. Thanks also to mgm, BW and Nettie for your good wishes.:
Baxter going great, I think he is starting to master the art of self settling, and it was DH who instigated it! We simply wrap and put dummy in, he talks to himself for a while then goes to sleep. This only happened over the weekend so I'll see how we go today now that DH is back at work.
Sarah - I just wanted to say well done on the expressing, great amount! But Glad snap lock bags aren't recommended apparently, something about the chemicals leaching into the EBM. I use the Medela snap lock bags instead.
Sorry for lack of personals, will try to catch up the rest of the thread, although Fire, please tell me more about infant led feeding? I've read a couple of website about it and it looks far easier than messing about with purees!

SG it is funny you mention the glad bags as I've been finding more and more of this reference to BPA.
Is anyone else concerned by the marketing of FEED YOUR PRECIOUS BABY SAFELY with BPA Free bottles. Apparently bottles made fromPES plastic, which gives them a natural golden colour are free of phthalates and free of bisphenol A (BPA)? a suspected hormone-disrupting chemical used in polycarbonate plastic, from which most baby bottles are made.
I'm wondering if it is true and thinking of switching to glass bottles for future feeds, but then I think is it just marketing?? Because they never warned us about using plastic when they started making plastic bottles, or was that because they never knew until recent research - link below.

Fire Love the idea of starting them on fruits and pawpaw - yum - mum might be eating the baby's food. The recommended vegies are pumpkin and sweet potato because they are sweet.
As for DD drinking your milk - thinking I might be giving it to DS and DH as they keep swinging this cold back and forth around our house - if I could knock it on the head with a dose of milk each day - I'll express away. How much did DD have each day?

Fire: If your go back and look at the DVD you should have got when your brought you carrier it explains. However if you have lost if you can look on their website. Their legs are ment to come out the side, and their bum is in line with yout belly button.

I don't put my carrier on that way, I do it how the man does in the video,
My Quick Guide:-
1. Put carrier on and leave straps lose.
2. Folder insert in half and put in carrier making sure it is even.
3. Left baby up and Lower baby down into carrier.
4. Giggle baby around under we are both comfy, with baby legs slight off to the side. His bum in line with my belly button.
5. Tighten straps up.
6. And AWAY WE GO...
7. Wyatt asleep in 3-5 mintues.
The only thing I don't like to do is bend down to pick up things, 'cos it feels as if he's going to fall out. Anyway I hope the help you fire...

Ok...its safe to assume my child is a freak of nature!
At 3 months and 7 days....he is having 2 meals a day...
He had farex for dinner last night and the night before, and then this morning he's been a shocker...mucking around, not sleeping (dummy or other wise), not really drinking...playing for a bit then getting festy....looked at DH and said "Only other thing I have left in my arsenal to try...is farex"
Looked at BJ and said "Lets got have some farex, which you won't eat, then we'll try a bottle which you won't drink, and then a nap which you won't have shall we" to which he just grinned.
He ate his farex like a pro, had about 70ml of bottle (mucked around a little), then went to sleep!
Im gonna try this reverse psych thing on him more often!
So...he will have farex for dinner tonight, then, tomorrow morning, he'll have some for brekky, some for lunch, and then some squashed potato for dinner...do that for a coupla days, then I'll do some pumpkin...and away we go!

Janine - how do you cue him to pee? Do you sit outside or inside (with sun coming in a window) - 'cause the wind is the coldest thing here so just being naked is the problem as the wind cuts right through you - even with the sun on you!
Also, Liam moans too. Especially with his fingers in his mouth. Very funny when he has hiccups as it sounds like 'uh, oh'. He does this more when he's tired. Liam's also one of those babies that won't sleep until he's really tired. You're in for a fight if you try to get him to sleep when he's first showing tired signs. Have to wait until he's actually grizzling before you do the cuddle/rock to sleep thing.
Grubi - the plastics argument is true for us adults too. There's heaps of discussion about the chemicals leeching into our drinking water, etc from the plastic bottes we all use every day. You've got the danger of glass breaking or chipping & bubs swallowing some glass too (happened just this week to another BB member - daughter nearly had to have surgery but luckily the glass just passed through her system). So it's a damned if you do, damned if you don't sort of thing!
BW - wow! I'm starting to wonder if Liam isn't ready for some 'real food' as he just seems to muck about with his bottles a lot lately. He's also hungry within 3 hours still which I'm sure is annoying for him as it is for us. However, I'm not game to try any solids until I see the Cleft Clinic in September as we'll need to do it differently because of his cleft.

Fire: BJ also moans, quite often he starts doing it and thats the real cue for bed time! He has moaned since day one..midwives in hospital thought it was hilarious!
As for floor time, we have a couple of play gyms, a wooden "Cariboo" one that we can hang as much or as little as we want on, and a little house with a roof etc that has a few things on it. I just plonk BJ down when he gets up (after a nappy change and a cuddle) then when he gets grumpy I sit with him on the floor, then when that no longer works he hops up! (Usually by then its time for a bottle and bed anyway!)....I don't do it for every awake period for the whole time, but at least some of the time.
Tummywise, he's pretty good cause when we were trying to get rid of the dummy, he slept on his tummy, plus we have tried to do tummy time from the start (which didnt go too well with the reflux).
I expressed the milk i gave to dd. I figured since ds and i weren't getting sick, we must have the cure. i think a mama's body works overtime to produce the needed antibodies. share 'em round, I reckon! :lol: I gave her 50ml shots, a few times a day, but the first time was just one 50ml shot before bed onr night and she woke up better than ever. that's why i kept it up for a while.
for ILW, I like this blog cos she's funny: baby led weaning she takes you from step one right through. i haven't read all of it so let me know if it has crap in there somewhere so i don't go recommending it again.

Toni, I cue with "wee wees, psss psss" :lol: for poo i cue, "poos! ugh ugh" i got those cues from the book "natural infant hygiene". the author had two nappy free babies at 3 weeks old! i'm not so swish at it but we're getting there. i've been cuing each time he poos (and i hear it) since he was born. Catching him peeing is much harder as the signs are more subtle. So it's taking longer to get him to pee on cue.
I've heard that boiling plastic bottles in water for half an hour makes them leach less. Not sure how true that is, if anyone wants to research it. But we only use glass or ceramic here for eating and drinking since we learned about the chemicals. We are also going to change our cookware from metal to ceramic/pyrex when we can afford it.
I'm not sure if this is a good or a bad thing, but Greer has found her hands to the point that she uses them to suck herself to sleep now. It's good because I can allow her to self settle, but like Katstribe (I think it was her) said in an earlier discussion about using dummies, you can't through their fingers away. At least ATM it only seems to be something she does to get off to sleep when I run out of patience. :) I really don't want to be threatening to chop fingers off when she is three or four :redface:
Fire did DH get Ci to use his hand to self settle? I recall you talking about it before.
The definite positive is that we seem to be settling into a bit of a sleep routine too as she tends to do so around 6pm. When my Mum had her on Saturday night she slept through 8pm to 2am and then until 6.15am. I don't keep track of the times at home, but I think we are getting 6ish to 9.30-10ish and then through to 3 or 4am and then either 6 or 7am.

Well girls, I am proud to say that my little Baxter has FINALLY cracked the 5kg mark! 5.075kg today, a gain of 395gms in 2 weeks. It's taken an awfully long time, but he is very long, just lean is all. :dance::dance:

Nettie Oliver is driving me nuts with his feeding at the moment too, he just mucks around with his bottles and constantly pushes the teat out and get really agro if I try to get him to keep feeding.
alittlegrubi Oliver is just starting to get the coordination right for getting his fist into his mouth too, so most of the time it is in his mouth.
Oliver was such a good boy today, he had 2 really big sleeps today, one for 2 hours and another for 2.5 hours, both sleeps I had to go and put the dummy in a couple of times, but at least he went back to sleep. Also, he gave me his first real 'laugh' today, it was so gorgeous, I didn't want him to stop.

Grubi, DS is still struggling with the hand sucking thing. He really wants to but isn't coordinated enough yet. Poor sod. It would solve so many of his issues.
I have one of those monologues about thumb sucking if anyone's interested. Babies suck in utero, and there is some evidence to suggest it is an inbuilt self soothing mechanism. If you press the palm of a newborn, they turn their head to that side. If you stroke the side of his mouth, he draws his hand to that place. After some research I have found that cultures that have constant contact and unrestricted breastfeeding have no thumbsucking. This tends to suggest that the mechanism was designed for less than optimal conditions (like us western struggling isolated mamas!).
But I believe it was a fall back plan. In our culture, we usually can't be there 100% of the time for our babies and they need to soothe somehow. They can't just flail in need when we walk away for a minute, or cry themselves to sleep or whatever, that isn't "soothing". But sucking is. So I think nature designed this hand to mouth feature of the baby. Sucking a thumb inutero seems to suggest it is a natural trait. Babies grow out of their physical self soothing by about age four, be it a blanky or thumb sucking or whatnot. Some children keep them longer and some keep them forever, but that's the same with anything. For instance toilet training. In a stress free home, when training is unforced, children won't wet the bed past a certain age. Because some do doesn't mean toilet training is unnatural, or that we should keep them in nappies "just in case" they are still wetting in childhood. know what I mean? I think, if they derive comfort from something, lettum 'ave it! :lol: If it seems dangerous (like head banging), then maybe look into why.
Thanks Fire - your monologue makes me feel better about the hand in mouth to self soothe business. DD only seems to do it when I've given up trying to settle or during the night to resettle.
I'm loathe to give a comforter as I was inadvertently given a comforter and I still have that as my comforter at night at the age of 38, sad, but true. Hopefully she doesn't need her thumb after 4.
I gave DS 50mls of EBM the night before last and he came back with the bottle and said "Mummy, I want some more of this one bottle, please." and gave me the doe eyes so he got another 50ml out of me. He just has the runny nose now, so I think you might be right about the antibodies Fire. DH isn't too sure - he said he doesn't like caramel icecream :cryinglaugh: that made me FOCL.(fall off chair laughing).
Shoegal :dance: for Baxter reaching 5kg and 395gm in two weeks is good. Just to let you know there is a little girl in my mothers group who is one day older than my DD and last week she was still only 4.8kgs, when my DD had tipped the 6kg. Some kids are just smaller and the MCHN said as long as she is happy - don't be too concerned to the mother.
Sharon Yippee on the sleeps. Now you need to get sleep too - half of the cause of the low moods is the sleep deprivation altering your body chemistry. So I hope Oliver helps you by sleeping more and you take advantage of it.:hug:
Nettie/Fire So I guess when it comes to plastics since we are forced to use plastic so much now as adults since they stopped making glass softdrink and glass milk bottles etc I've probably already created a lot of the problems for my kids before they even start having a bottle.

Still find the need to bow down in awe to those mothers with more than one under 4 that are fulltime mums (like Danielle, Lulu and Beatrix) sorry I can't remember all of you. My one day a week is hard enough to deal with, especially the TT and a baby.
Zennie How are things with DP? Improved? Things are much better for us now, we are planning on shipping at least DS (nearly 3) off at least once every 3 weeks to one of our parents and once every 2 months my parents will have both to give us some time to be adults and go out with friends together as opposed to him doing it all by himself. I'm keen on getting the chance to DTD again soon so will be suggesting ILs have DS overnight very soon since they have been OS for 6 weeks.

not much time to write right now - but as for hand/thumb sucking, DD often does this while i'm actually holding her; maybe she likes getting a double comfort dose! I just wish she would soothe herself to sleep this way (or any way - i'm not fussy).
gotta run to shops now while DD is asleep in sling. Naps are only 30 minutes these days and it's driving me CRAZY. if she woke up happy it would be fine, but she's always tired and cranky.

Grubi - I know I'm not on here as much because Liam's so much fun to play with now. I spent an hour this afternoon playing with him (rubbing my face on his belly and giving him big smooches on his cheeks) - he thinks it's a crack-up!
Sharon - Liam either scoffs his 110 mls (our best guess at how much to put on for him) or plays with half of it. It's kinda frustrating!

Hi all, reading these posts has confirmed that Luke is a giant heffalump - last wekeend I weighed him at 8kgs neat... it's ridiculous - the MCHN just laugh at him! Still just on the booby juice.
week 2 of work is going well. Seem to have gotten a bit of a pattern - mostly me running around like a maddie from 6am until 11pm each day - when I am not feeding I seem to be expressing, but it is going well. Just need to talk Luke into sleeping in on weekends so I can have a rest!
Luke is also very alert and playful - it is jut gorgeous.
Anyway, bed is calling me. Hope everyone is doing well.

She is finally supporting her head much better as well, she seems to actually bit a bit slower then what my older two were at this age but i guess all babies are different

Wth everything that haas happene lately i have been so stressed my milk is drying up so have been put on Motilum for a week and it is already making a huge differnce,
Mj went from waking to feed every 3 hrs maybe even more to feeding once a night again!!!! And even after her feed last night i managed to express 50ml!!!
I am trying to get up some stock so i can give her to exDH for a couple of hrs cause they really need to bond or she wont have a relationship with her dad
