Thanks for your help Willow. Basically GP was saying that they don't really need to fed throughout the night... He actually said technically speaking they don't need to feed throughout the night from about 8 weeks. Now, I must say I have a great GP and he is very knowledgable about BF and babies. But I don't agree with that - but that's cool. He is just trying to help. He did suggest controlled crying - not really my cup of tea - but DS has ended up crying tonight anyway :doh:. Just going to try to comfort him back to sleep when he wakes up so frequently.
I was talking to issy about this too. GP was saying bubs was waking cause he wants a feed cause he is used to getting one IYKWIM. I think issy gives lochie one feed around 3amish. I was hoping to reduce te number of feeds, cause trust me DS is just getting more cause he can. I mean I was feeding him each time we woke up :redface::redface::redface:. So sometimes 5 times throughout the night. I would be happy to just do a couple... I am just struggling to get up 5-6 times a night. I don't think he needs that many. Does any of that make sense :lol: So I guess I am just trying to reduce the number of feeds so DS doesn't think he can just wake for booby all the time... Thanks again Willow :hug:

Rach - cutting down the number of feeds overnight sounds like a good place to start. Sorry to hear Eli has a virus but at least it doesn't seem to be bothering him.

I spoke too early about M's sleeping and jinxed myself. She was up at midnight and I fed her. Then she was up not too long after that and was burning up. Her temp was 38.5 so gave her panadol and a bit of a bottle. She then slept for a little while and then up again. I brought her into bed with me and she slept and fed. I know I broke my own rule but I figure sickness doesn't count. Anyway she seems fine now.

Rach - I agree with Willow on the feeding overnight FWIW. They are still little and its a long time to expect them to go without feeding KWIM? E is the same as Eli - I know how you feel! She averages 4 feeds overnight, but when she was sick recently she was up ALL night LOL I 'm just doing what suits us as a family so that's not to say that you couldn't cut the number of feeds back a bit if that's what works for you. :hug: hun, you sound like you've got it sorted without any advice from me ;)

Saffi - Oh bummer :( I hope she stays well for you and yay for a tooth!

:hello: everyone else! Sorry I'm a bit tired today (what's new LOL) so really lame persies I know.

Oh Dear! I went back looking for my last post to help me do persies and it was on page 6 - way too slack on my part. :redface:

We had our trip away for 9 days - 5100km in 9 days including 4 rest days. Was great to see my sister and her family and finally meet my niece. Miss Z was a great little traveller. We would hit the road pretty early in the morning - once it was 3:30am and I would pump just before she was due for her morning feed. I would then drive and DH would sit in the back and give the EBM to her. DD got sick though the day before we had to start the drive home :( She apparently had/has RSV virus. Finally she is starting to mend though. Wasn't fun looking after her and DH while trying not to get it bad myself. We managed to get her some new toys - which she totally loves :) Have started solids - took a bit to get her interested. She's not a fan of puree really but loves the baby led solids approach. Rockmelon, apple, brocoli, capsicum, carrot, banana - not a fan of potato or pumpkin yet though and she loves watermelon and grapes in her mesh bag. Hates rice cereal though.

She is sitting really well on her own now and a couple of days ago she started using her arms to support her (we've been seeing physio about this) when I put her in a crawl position.

No teeth here - although soo much movement and you can feel them and see the little lumps. Mum was first word but it has been put aside for bubba and a combo of mumand bub ;)

It's DH & my 5 yr Anniversary today :)

TK: How are you and your DH going? Hope you are feeling better and glad you got a good doctor who gave you the treatment you needed.

Misty: WTG on your licence! Must feel heaps better knowing you have that extra bit of independence. Hope you and Baz are feeling better soon. Another clever bub pulling up on things!

Saffi: WTG on the teeth? Grr @ your MIL with the steak. My MIL & FIL constantly have a go at me about my parenting. I'm so glad they're on the opposite side of the country. Woo hoo for the painted room.

TippyToes: Such a lovely thing being a god parent isn't it. You gals are lucky to have shared so many awesome things together. Yaaaay for Eli crawling and pulling himself up on things :clap:

Willow: 9.8kg and 68cm long - he sounds like a big strong boy. I've been thinking about doing the whole sleep school thing with DD. Trying to get her to sleep through the day is a nightmare - just naps, if that! She is constantly grizzly and needs non stop attention. How is gym going?

Trish: Sounds like Alana will be getting around on her own before you know it.

Salboo: Our friend has a Veebee play pen - by valco I think. It is great. We've been thinking about one as this house is hard to baby proof. So it seems easier alternative for when I want to get things done and DD is out of sight.

Koru: Welcome Back! Glad Orla travelled better than the past. Good luck moving house.

Megs Mum: Hope E gets better soon. It's so horrible to see them sick.

Chezel: 2 teeth in one week eeiik. Big effort!

megsmum - thanks for advice hun :hug:, I really appreciate it! Yeah, I don't expect him to go all night without a feed. Last night went quite well considering. I must admit he cried, but I was there comforting him, it is the hardest part of it all.
He went to bed at 8, woke up at 9 & 10. I rocked him back to sleep - and he used his thumb :lol:. Then he woke at 1:50 and I gave him a feed. Woke again at 3:40 and rocked him to sleep, he woke up at 7:40 I feed him and he was ready to get up at 8:40. So, pretty good for the first night. I think I'll just keep following his cues and try my hardest to get some sort of pattern going. We'll get there hey?

Elle - glad you had a great trip and WTG on the new tpys, my DS LOVES his toys, so cute! Also, those mesh things are great hey? Eli loves rockmelon in his! Also, happy anniversary!!!!!

Issy - thanks for another great swimming date!;)

Willow - last night went okay....still going to give him at least one feed, 2 if he really needs it. It will be all good! Thanks for your help too! :hug:

Well Baz is finally worm free! (more or less, we need to redose in 2 weeks to make sure). :lol: I look forward to no more yukky nappies, and he might restart gaining weight better now (he has only gained 200g in the past 2 months, but is still healthy chubby ;) ).

I got a new mobile phone today - or rather DH went and got it for me. I went to get it yesterday and was declined because my job is only classed as casual (even though I have held the position for 4 yrs, have to work a minimum number of hours each week and it is considered more then adequate by the banks for mortgages, loans and credit cards and it is only a $19 plan!). Grrrr. So my HUSBAND had to get for me!
Well anyway, now I can join the 21st Century and receive emails on my phone :) Alls well that ends well. :)

Misty: :leap: Great news bout Baz's worms. Amazes me how they work things out sometimes - these credit companies. They give way too much to some but not enough to others.

Once again I have no time for persie :doh: What's new hey!!
Just in response to the overnight feeding, I still feed DS once or twice overnight. He always feeds at 4am & 7:30am (why he can't be this precise in the daytime is beyond me :lol:) Some nights he'll wake around midnight & seeing as he hasn't fed since 6-7pm I always feed him at this time. Would be nice to have an uninterrupted nights sleep though!! Well, sometimes he'll sleep right through which is lovely, but those times are few & far between!!

Our big issue lately is DS' settling. He has been taking hours to settle at night & some day sleeps are pretty bad too. He fights against me settling him so I leave him to it but then he gets over tired - a vicious cycle!! I'm hoping it's just a phase that he'll grow out of soon. He still refuses to sit & continues his quest to crawl lol. Had yogurt this morning - LOVED it!!

We are off to Mansfield for a few nights to celebrate our 3 year wedding anniversary, the amount of stuff we're taking for DS is hilarious!! I hope you all have a great weekend & I promise I'll catch up properly with everyone next time :lol:

Got a cranky baby here. She had a high temp last night and again today. I looked inside her mouth and another 2 teeth are coming through. This makes 4 teeth in all! Poor thing must be in pain. She's down now but I suspect that I will be up to her a few times overnight.

misty - that's good news about Baz! That's so stupid about the phone! I've heard a lot of SAHM are treated like that!
Cheezel - travelling with a kid means never travelling light again. I just don't get how someone so small can need so much stuff.

Took me a while to catch up on what's been going on with everyone! Been up since 5.30am when my dad rang from NZ to tell me my sis was ok - she was already in hospital in Santiago for a DVT - long flight back to Chile (where she works) from NZ (where she was on holidays with us) when the earthquake hit. Boy it's been an eventful couple of days of international phone calls between Chile NZ and Oz first with the blood clot then the quake!

Anyway I'll attempt a few persies while Orla has her morning nap:
Saffi - yes being back in NZ made me very homesick. DP is seriously considering moving there now (hooray!) but I have to finish my degree here first as there's no degree courses in Naturoapthy in NZ only diplomas so we'll be here a few more years yet. Hope the teething and temperatures have settled down for you :)
Misty - yay for finally beating those worms! I was going to suggest trying for a herbal anti-worm from a naturopath (very effective actually) if Baz is too young for conventional worming drugs but it seems you've got it licked now :)
Cheezel - hooray for the teeth! We're still waiting for the white gums to pop thru but they're still giving Orla grief in the meantime...
Megsmum - how's E faring now?
Rach - OMG cruising already! As for your night feeds I'd agree with the others - he's still only 6 months old and to go from 5 overnight feeds to nothing is a huge step. Trust your instincts that it's time to cut down the number of feeds but maybe not go 'cold turkey'. We co-sleep and on a normal night Orla feeds about 3 times overnight (which I barley notice) but when it's hot she can get thirsty every hour! :o
Ellee - way to go on the expanding menu :) Orla hates rice cereal too. I'd forgo the cereal altogether if she weren't such a 'poo-ey' baby - needs binding up! I've switched to millet cereal which is a bit tastier (has a nutty flavour) and seems to be going down well. Unfortunately she's not a big fan of banana :( Gave her fig in the porridge yesterday which she loved but OMG did it make for a poo explosion!!!.

We had a garage sale yesterday to offload as much superfluous junk before the move as we could - pretty good result :) proceeds towards a new carseat for Orla. Now that's done we can focus on packing. Friends with a big van are helping us move and DP's mum is staying with us til the move to watch Orla while we deal with the moving itself (she lives in Bali and flits between there and Melbourne) so we're getting goos support with the move - actually looking forward to it as it's a better house than the current one (albeit smaller).

Just a quick one - Eli is doing okay with overnight stuff....we'll get there. Basically I have been giving him 2 feeds during the night and then rocking him to sleep other times he wakes 2-3 times I guess. But I just wanted to quickly ask what to do about squealing - really loud SQUEALING! He has just started doing this yesterday (my mum says it is the terrible 2's already :lol:). He does it when he is frustrated, when he can't stand up alone!!:shakehead::doh: I know YES he is trying this already - pain in the butt! And when he is really excited - this one I don't mind so much cause it is kind of cute! Should I just ignore the frustrated ones? I don't think he will listen to be if I tell him not to LOL!!! Itis just really funny how it suddenly started...

Tippytoes - You know Lochie is a great squealer!!!! He squeals all the time and has even started yelling and shouting at DS1 when he takes his toys or when he gets frustrated with him being in his face! Its kinda cute!

I dont know, but I think feeding a Lochie every hour over night was a bit excessive???? Lochie was starting to do this and it lasted about 3 weeks. I know he was partly trying to build my supply and partly using me to sooth him back to sleep, which I didnt want to become a habit for him, since he has always been able to self settle so brilliantly. I feed Lochie at 8-8:30pm, just before going to bed, and then again at what ever time he wakes first during the night, which is usually around 3am, then I feed him again at around 6-7am. If he wakes between 8:30pm and 12am, I will not feed him, I just re-wrap him or stroke his cheek, which usually put him back to sleep, then I feed him the next time he wakes and then again in the morning. I know he isnt waking for feeds during the night because he is hungry because he is getting enough food during the day. If he was sick, I would most certainly feed him whenever he wants it. I find that if im up feeding mulitple times throughout the night (and when I say multiple, I mean more than 2 times, for me 2 times is fine) Im shattered the next day, which makes me grumpy and less tolerant and takes away my quality time with bubs and ds1. Since I cracked down on his overnight feeds, and have encouraged him to go back to sleep, he is sleeping so well again, and Im feeling so much better during the day, which makes me a happier mummy. Lochie is also happier during the day as he is getting enough sleep at night. I have also found that my supply is better cause he is not snacking throughout the night. I HATE controlled crying, and would never do this with my children, I co-slept with DS1 for 2 years as this is what he needed. But lochie doesnt sleep well in our bed, and has always been so good at night time, without having to cry himself to sleep. But I think ignoring a little whinging, and instead going in and comforting him when he needs it during the night and feeding when appropriate is better for both bubs and us.

Anyway, ladies, hope you are all haivng a nice weekend, bubs is up so gotta fly!

koru - what a relief that your sister is ok. Not good about the DVT tho. Any plans for her to go back to NZ? Yay for the garage sale. I'm too lazy to do something like that.

AFU - major cranky bub here! She's not sleeping much, not feeding much, crying a lot and doing really yucky poos. She has 3 teeth coming through so I think she's in a bit of pain. To top it off I think she's got some kind of cough. Its really frustrating as I'll feed her to sleep, transfer her to the cot and she'll wake up immediately or within 20 mins. So she slept with me last night and pretty much used me as a human dummy all night! Don't hold much hope for her sleeping today.

On the upside the shelves in M's room are up and some cute canvas prints. I really should move her in......

Anyway, the screaming has begun....

Saffi - M sounds like E was when she was sick last week, poor little thing :( I hope she's better soon and that you can get some rest.

Rach - Yay for Eli cruising! Wow you're going to have your hands full soon aren't you? LOL Don't know about the squealing though, I'd probably just tell him gently not to do it, but not necessarily expecting him to listen and stop it!!

Issy - I think you just have to do what is right for you and your family. As I've said before E feeds about 4 times a night here and I do it mostly so DD1 doesn't get disturbed too much as she has been really tired with school, but honestly just do what works best for you :hug:

Koru - I hope your sister is on the mend soon and glad to hear she's OK. Must have been one scary earthquake :o I know I'll never forget the one here in Newcastle and it was only a littlie compared to Chile!

Hi everyone else, sorry to run but E has just woken up from her nap crying! At least she is almost over her bronchiolitis now, just got a little bit of a lingering cough. Hoping to get our 6 months needles sometime next week, fingers crossed for 3rd time lucky! We had another try of solids again over the weekend too with a bit more success. She still was not real fussed - screwed up her face and spat a lot back out - but she didn't vomit, yay! It took ages to get her to a about a teaspoons worth, but hopefully we will continue to make some slow progress.

Oh saffi - poor little bubba girl. Getting teeth can do all sort of nasty things to them cant it? DS1 always spiked a temp, got an ear infection, or runny nose at the time of teething and basically fed all night as a result. He co-slept with us for 2 years so it didnt really matter if he fed all night or not. I didnt even notice him feeding. I think feeding them and just being there while they are going through something like that is the best thing to do...you just wish you could take the pain away from them...poor little things.

Koru - good on you for setting up a garage sale...what a great idea! Good luck with the move too. It will prob be easier than you imagine. And its a great opportunity to have a clean out, a fresh start and re-organise things.

Cheezlemonster - happy wedding anniversary. Hope you had a lovely time away! I hear ya on the baby stuff though, since Lochie has been born we have travelled to mildura a few times and to melbourne for a 10 day holiday. The amount of stuff we had to bring for him was crazy! The jump from one child to 2, one of which is an infant means a thousand more things to organise and bring along with us.

Ellee - hope you are feeling better :D We have days like that here all the time, things just seem to hard sometimes and all I want to do is sleep, or shut myself away and read a book. If the house is too messy and im having one of those day, I just leave and deal it with i get back ;)

Tippytoes - Sounds like you have a good plan for overnight feeds :). I usually give Alana a dreamfeed at 9pm and then she wakes for a feed around 4-5am. If she wakes sooner I try resettle her first, if she's hungry she's good at letting me know LOL! I can't BELIEVE that Eli is cruising already :o. I think we should start taking bets on when he will start walking :lol:.

Koru - Welcome back! You're poor sister, I hope she's OK. It must have been a scary few days for you all.

CheezelMonster - I hope you had a lovely time away for your anniversary :). Ours 8 year anniversary is coming up in a couple of weeks. I hope your DS starts settling more easily for you soon. How long do you keep him up before putting him down for a nap? I wonder if he's overtired? Alana is much harder to settle if she's been awake for more than 2 hours at a time.

Hi to anyone I've missed!

AFU - DH took the boys away camping for the weekend so I had a nice quiet weekend with Alana. She's loving her rice cereal, she has started napping for longer during the day after having solids which is great! I'll start vegies with her this week. She can now commando crawl forwards, although she doesn't go far and is still hands and knees crawling backwards. She always does something new on her monthly anniversary LOL! At 3 months she rolled from tummy to back, at 4 months she rolled from back to tummy, at 5 months she started crawling backwards and at 6 months she started commando crawling. I wonder if she'll start walking at 7 months? JK!

We are planning a 6 week caravanning trip over to WA in September/October. I have NO idea how she'll go travelling that far or how she'll go sleeping in the caravan! It's too hard to predict because they change so much by the time they're 12 months+ old. I'm sure we'll manage and have fun though.

Anyway, I'd better go and tackle the washing. The boys brought home lots of dirty clothes and towels for me, how nice.

Hey all, thougth I'd pop in quickly while I have sleeping children and 5 mins to myself!

Sleep/feeding overnight - Totally agree that feeding every hour etc is over the top. I think if you're feeding every hour or many times at night then something's probably amiss but you do what works for you at the end of the day. I don't however see anything unusual in a 6 month old baby that feeds once or twice overnight. Not at all. I think it's unrealistic to think that most babies could go all night without a feed. If your baby sleeps through then that's awesome, but I'd dare say most babies wouldn't at this age.

For those who are resettling instead of feeding - How are you doing this? ie rocking, patting etc?? And how long are you spending each time? Nights like last night where we had a shocker and he woke about 4 times I think I need to resettle sometimes instead of feed. But to be honest, he doesn't settle quickly and I get so tired I just cave and feed him again :redface: I don't have a problem feeding him once or twice overnight but I want to cut out any more feeds than that. Have set myself a goal to work on them one at a time.

Also, anyone else down to 2 day sleeps already?? I've decided to stop fighting DS to have that last late afternoon nap and instead am putting him to bed at 6.30pm. Not ideal but I think he's over it to be honest. I've persisted for about 3 weeks now and he is still refusing that third sleep. He has two good sleeps of at least 1.5 hours usually, so he's still averaging 3-4 hours sleep a day. On the days he has short sleeps for some reason then he will have three but as I said, his naps are usually pretty good so that doesn't happen very often.

Misty - Glad to hear Baz is finally worm free. You must be so relieved. Good work on the weight loss too, you're doing an awesome job!

Saffi - Just noticed yesterday that D is cutting his two top teeth. Ouch! They look very red, inflamed and sore. I can clearly see the whites of the teeth so hopefully they won't take too much longer to come through. He hasn't been too out of sorts with it though, wonder if that teething necklace really works?? :dunno: He has had a third on the bottom popping up and down for about 3 weeks now but still hasn't cut it. Weird. I know that can happen but I've never seen it before. Hope Immy is feeling better soon. How long now till you go back to work?

Koru - Glad to hear your sister is OK.

Megs - Glad to hear DD is feeling better. Hope she gets the hang of the solids soon. I switched to finger foods/BLS a bit a few days ago and have seen a huge improvement. Doing a mixture of that and mashed stuff too. I am so slow, I didn't realise you were in Newcastle! Have I already told you we are planning a move up there hopefully in about 18 months time??
