Babies Born October 1st ~ 15th 2008

Good morning everyone

amy - welcome to BB - my fella was pretty jaundice too and we had to keep an eye on him cos I went home within 24 hours - he still has a bit of yellow in his eyes - breastmilk jaundice they call it apparently - but yeah a bit stressful making sure they feed regularly etc.

Itsme - re b/f in public - if uncomfortable I just used a muslin wrap to drape over my shoulder and it covers my side and his head - I don't like flashing my post-3-babies roll I have at the moment when I sit down ...... next week onto healthy eating plan again and losing the excess kgs. :rolleyes:

Georgi - sounds like Byron is doing really well too - I can't believe you have that much EBM in your freezer! :lol: Hope the inlaws are being a great help ;)

Tanstar - how is James going? Did he lose much weight to start with? If found with DS1 cos he was a bit bigger (but not that big LOL) that he didn't lose much weight at all - he actually put on 30g in the first week . :redface:

Just a quick reply to Itsme's question about public breastfeeding as Loralei has just stirred again. I had a friend who always wore a singlet underneath all her tops and would pull the top of the singlet down for feeding. I recommend this as a way to discretely feed bub as I took it on as my solution to the same problem when I go out. You don't have your tummy exposed and the boob is still covered too because you have 2 tops on. I know it can be a little hot in summer time though and this is where the thin wraps come into play as a shield for flashing in public instead of two layers of clothing. HTH in some way?

Oh my god, Jude kept me awake all night long. He just wants to eat, cry and not sleep. :(

i am coming in here it just taking time and im still lurking in the due date thread waiting for some girls to have their bubs. The updated list is on page 1.

not much to say here.. Mia decided at about 4am this morning to throw up everywhere.. like EVERYWHERE! it was a fountain. I felt so sorry for her. So DP was up at 4 changing all the bedding and i was changing her and me ( as i was holding her at the time :S) Im not sure why she did it but she seems to feel better because of it. Afteer i rocked her to sleep at 5 she woke about 6:30 and drained my left side completley (very proud) and fell back asleep till 11:30am!! so with that extra sleep i feel pretty good
Heading out to mums today to spend some time with her before she goes back to work. Dont really feel up to it but ill go anyway.

Hey Hollye - was Mia a bit mucus-y in her chest? Sometimes it takes a time to come out - especially if c-sec cos it doesn't get squeezed out with their entrance into the world .... having said that Giselle my DD was vaginal birth and had lots of mucus on her chest - it took about 2 weeks for her to get all the gunk off her chest and yep she felt much better for it!!

I know the first 2 months are hard and we wish the baby days away - I am trying so hard not to cos I know Zander is our last baby ..... but bring on dropping an overnight feed I say :clap:

HOllye - Ethan did the other end at us the other week. It seriously squirted yellow 2-3 feet!! at me, all over the bed and on the carpet! it was sooo groose!

Well we have been sleeping DS on his belly the last few times and he settles really quickly.

Over night is still anight mare though. Last night feeds were at 730,1130,1am,3a,5am 630am!
Clustering still overnight and 3-4 hrly during the day ! it is driving me nuts!

We had a bit of an adventrue last night!! Our first hospital trip. All day yesterday Bethany had really bad runny poop and so much atleast 8 nappies worth in about 10 hours, that is unusal for her, toward the end of the day she started to get really lethargic and stopped wanting to feed. Alarm bells rang and I called the baby health line they suggested taking her up to the hospital to be checked out. Thankfully everything was fine, probably just a passing bug but with the heat and humidity it could have got bad fast. I am glad I was over cautious. But we were home late and mummy and daddy were starving!! She had a good night though and seems back to her perky little self today. But while we are at mothers group this morning I'll have the baby health nurse check her over again just to reaasure me! The helpline where pretty good too, I thought they would just palm me off to the dr's this morning or do the standard "if you are worried go to the hospital" but they took the time to really listen to what was happening and gave me the options. I was impressed, I'll feel good about calling them again :)
Well the bottles need attention and then it is off to mum's group...

Tan - I hope you are feeling better, and those feelings are gone completely. I do know what you mean tho, as this was the first time that I didnt get to experience labour. I have to wonder if Olivia would have been better off waiting until I went into labour, yet then again I also wonder if she didnt come out when she did would her weight have been less. I also keep thinking back to when I first found out I was UTD with her and how everyone was so negative IRL about me expecting again. Like it was any of there business anyway, yet you would have thought they would have been happy for us. I keep wondering if it was all the negative vibes that gave me such a stressful pgcy and poor Olivia was the one struggling. It used to be everytime someone visited, now there wont be anymore after this one will there? blah blah blah. I used to think why should I have to explain myself to everyone, because I wanted another one. Noone really understood all the worries this time either, yet everything everyone had said has stuck in my mind. I keep thinking now that she is here and how everyone is so inlove with her now, and I cant help but think how hipercritical they are. Why couldnt they just have been happy from the start, not just as soon as she was born? I really dont think they realised how they made me feel this whole time. I think tho it is still all the worry atm that I am feeling like this, I so hope it passes soon. You hang in there too. I hope your c/s pain gets better soon, I am still sore as well and have a stupid headache that doesnt seem to want to leave. Not sure if it is hormonal or not tho. hugs

Amanda - I have to ask if anyone questioned you about having No.5? I am glad Julian is doing so well, and sleeping so well. Olivia is only up once a night as well. She is such a wonderful sleeper too and has been since she was born, she is also very relaxed. Very similar to all my others. hugs

Amy - Welcome. So glad your little one is feeling better now. hugs

Kuraiza - Hi hun, maybe your little Jude has reflux, it wouldnt hurt to ask your Dr next time. My first DS1 was so terrible. Every feed he would projectile vomit everything he ate, yet he kept putting on weight. It is really good that Jude is still putting on weight, yet he would sleep so soundly and all night at that. My DD4 had silent reflux, her tummy always sounded like she was hungry, it was always grumbling and she always felt as tho she was never full, even tho she slept fine once on anti reflux formula. I am wondering now with Olivia if she has silent reflux now too, as her tummy does the same thing, however she sleeps soooooo well. I hope the BF gets easier for you hun, Olivia expected the milk to drop in her mouth, she didnt want to work for it at the beginning, yet once she knew what to do, she was hooked. :lol: hugs

Itsme - Olivia uses me for comfort as well, and so she can sleep. She will continuously feed for most of the evening/night upto around 9.30-10.30pm on and off. She builds up her food stores for her sleep at night. She just loves her sleep. :D Once Olivia is asleep she is so hard to wake, such a sound sleeper. Last night she slept for 6 1/2 hours. I am expecting that as she gets older her sleeping will be all night. Hang in there hun it gets easier. How much has Maya put on? Has she gone past her birth weight yet? Olivia still hasnt gone past her birth weight yet, so the pediatrician is keeping a close eye on her, as we may end up having to do her heart u/s earlier than January if she doesnt get there soon. All of my babies had jaundice even Olivia, and you know I overheard one of the midwives mentioning to another patient that women with O Positive blood group will have babies with jaundice. That is what I am. hugs

Georgi - Byron is doing so well, what a cutie he is. Glad you had a wonderful time away at Lennox Head. I hope Byron is behaving for his wonderful mummy. Woohoo on your first all upthe back poo experience. hehehe hugs

PP - Had to :lol: about the poo. Olivia one day at the hospital, while I was changing her bottom farted and a spit of poo squirted at my face. Thankgoodness my mouth wasnt opened. hehehe Hope you feel better soon. hugs


Well had Olivia's pediatrician appt on Friday and her kidney u/s on Thursday. All went sooo well. The only thing the Dr atm wants to keep an eye on over the next few weeks is her weight gain. Olivia's birth weight was 2380gm, she dropped down to 2250gm, then dropped down again last week Monday to 2140gm, then Friday on the Dr's scale she had gained 10gm to 2150gm. He wants to use his scale as everyones scale can be different. Her h/c was 34cm the same as her birth. Anyway as the midwife is coming again soon as she wants to keep an eye on both Olivia and I, she will re weigh again today. Will let you know how that goes.

Well heres the update:

The midwife came and reweighed Olivia today and she is now 2170gm, so she has put on 30gm since last Monday. If Olivia doesnt gain enough weight that the pediatrician would like, then he is going to arrange for her heart u/s to be done earlier than January. I should have mentioned that her kidneys are normal so that was such great news to my ears.

Thanks Cheryl - :hug: I haven't given myself time to debrief just yet but I will need to get it all out at some stage....Good luck with the weigh in today.

Amy - You poor thing - what a fright you must have had but I am glad Bethany is ok. Like you said better safe than sorry when you aren't sure and I love Nurse On Call - they have been fab any time I have had to call them.


PP- Hang in there hun - it is tough but hopefully these little ones will give us a break soon.

Kuraiza - :hug: I hope Jude has given you a bit more rest over the last few nights.

Sami - I am trying to be aware of that too seeing as we will be stopping now.... but yep - 2 overnight feeds would be better! ;)

Hollye - Ugh at the puke all over everything - I was changing James at 3 am last night and I wasn't really awake and didn't have the light on enough and I ended up spilling half of his very runny poop all over a gorgeous WHITE wrap that I left under him instead of using the cloth nappy. Not happy.

Curl - I do exactly that with public feeding. I have really thin shoestring strappy singlets that I wear under everything - a bit warm in summer but not overly bad and then everything stays covered! :)

Can't go back much further - sorry ladies - :hug: to everyone I have missed.

Had our 2 week check today and since Friday week ago, James has put on a whopping 430grams!!!!!!He is now 4780grams. I can't believe it - part of the reason is that I have loads of milk that comes out at super fast speed, so on the bad side we get the built up wind, vomit and tummy aches too. Going to try feeding lying down a bit to slow it all down for the not so little guy. He slept for nearly 7 hours in the bouncer last night so today we went and got a hammock from Hire for Baby - he has just fallen asleep in it so will see if it helps settle him. I really think the reason he wakes so frequently is because he is flat on his back and the wind hurts him.

i think we are all popped in the october thread yay! so ill be in here more often.

This BFing thing is really getting me down :( she falls asleep all the time.. wont latch on and i dont seem to satisfy her very much. My supply still too low? I have stopped topping her up with formula (didnt have a choice) and im not expressing much anymore as i was only getting about 65mls out anyway which just doesnt do it for her. I dont know what to do.. formula is looking real good right now..

Hollye: I get vomitted on like that every other day or so. Right down my back, all over the bed or floor. Yum! I'm glad to know I'm not the only one sleeping in til 11am (if I have the chance). Hey, 65mLs is good! I struggle to express anything like that. I was thrilled the other night at 2am when I expressed 65mLs. For some reason my boob was engorged at 2am and since Jude was keeping me awake anyway, I took advantage of it. However, I don't do that every night that's for sure. If you're worried about your milk supply, keep expressing. Mia is still very young so 65mLs is all she probably needs, so that's what your boobs are producing.

SamiH, PinkPalace: I've read that once baby reaches 5kgs the overnight feeds can stop. With Jude being 4 weeks and not yet 3kgs, I'm not expecting to sleep for a looooooong time.

Amy: Ugh, that hospital trip sounds scary. Sorry to hear about that. I was wondering if Jude was sick the other day when he kept me up all night so I went and bought a thermometer, but he rested after 1pm and everything is back to relatively normal (for him, not me).

Csab: I'll ask the doc about reflux. I mentioned it to the nurse when I took him for a weigh last week and she didn't seem too worried as long as he continues to gain weight. I'm thinking of going back tomorrow for another weigh, as long as I can get out of the house in time. I think Jude attaches well, but he drinks heartily for about 5 minutes then gets sleepy. However, I also read that babies drink 80% of their feed in the first 5 minutes, so I guess it's normal. Olivia is a tiny tot, isn't she? She must feel so fragile in your arms. And I thought Jude was small. Keep up the good work with her, you're doing a great job!

Tanstar: Do you think James could have a chat to Jude about growing up big and strong? Just what do you keep in those breasts of yours?? :P

Blizz: Hello!

Me: Ok so I had an ultrasound on my boob lump and I haven't got the results, but the sonographer said she couldn't see any lumps, just normal breast tissue. So that was music to my ears.

BUT I have had a killer earache for 3 days and last night the pain in my throat was agony so I dropped in to the GP today without an appointment, told them I was in agony and saw a doctor within 2 minutes (I think I'll use this technique from now on). Turns out I have an inflammed corotid artery which is causing all the pain. Wow! Wasn't expecting that! The treatment is simply aspirin, however as I'm breastfeeding I can't indulge in the treatment. I can have enough aspirin to prevent any blood clots forming (100mgs a day) but I'll have to endure the pain (although panadol helps a little).

Ok I have now officially suffered enough medical conditions to fill the pages of Greys Anatomy!

kuraiza - re reaching 5kg - I hadn't heard that before - Zander was 4.8kg a week ago so fingers crossed we're looking up! He can chat to Jude too - that means he has put on 1.125kg since birth when weighed at 4w4d :o wow, he gets weighed this Friday for 6 week check so hopefully he has cracked 5kg :)

Hollye - 65mls if that is what Mia takes that sounds good! My MCHN gave me the calculation of 150ml per 1kg of weight divided by amount of feeds they have a day. So, if Mia is say 3.5kg and on 8 feeds a day - she would need approx 65mls per feed - so sounds pretty good to me. Yeah b/f can be a hard gig, specially first time round - but even this time I have had some trouble but fingers crossed I am back on track and hope you and Mia's b/f relationship grows too :)

csab - glad everything for little Olivia is coming up trumps. You've certainly go tyour hands full at the moment with all the extra appts etc, let alone having a newborn and a family already! Well done to you :clap:

Tan - yeah here's to less night feeds already - my hubby was away 2 nights last week and between my DS who goes to bed early and gets up early, my DD who's body clock is the other way going to bed at 8pm and getting up later than DS, and overnight feeding, I was probably a danger on the road doing the school run :doh: However the last 2 nights Zander has fed at 7pm and woke at 2am :o - wish he would wake again at 10.30 and then have the 7 hour stint until 5.30!!! Hard for me to sleep before 9pm even if I am dog tired - gotta see DH sometime :rolleyes:

kur - ethan is only 3.7 so a long way off 5kg! lol

Hollye - try changing her nappy so she is woken a little. Unfortunately Bf does make both bub and mum sleepy! (obviously ethan didnt get this memo for night time!!!). The best thing to do it express after each feed esp on the breast you just fed on .. it tells your body that it needs to make more as bub is still drinking iykwim!!) try this for a few days and you will find your supply will increase.

I can only get about 60 ml on an express to. I find i have to do it a couple of times to get a decent feed for ethan. Also when you give EBM in the bottle express at that time too so you body realises it needs to produce milk for a feed at that time otherwise if you skip a BF and give bottle without expressing your body will think bub doesnt need the milk and wont produce more!

thanks for the advice girls, its great to know im not alone. i topped her up from her last feed with formula as she was screaming at me for about 4 hours. She still took 70 mls of formula! :( wtf!!

Oh gosh..There's so much for me to catch up on. As I am reading all of your posts I am making comments in my head but don't think I can get them all down. I'm too far behind.

KURAIZA I have my in laws here at the moment too, it's just extra work for me. All the cooking & shopping. I think my MIL doesn't want to interfere so theres very little help coming my way. I'm not one to ask either. It's nice seeing them, but I'm already looking forward to their departure. I want my peace & quiet!

ITSME I'm still not confortable bfeeding in public. I hope it gets easier

SAMI My in laws haven't helped at all. I think my MIL doesn't want to get in the way. She never interferes in anything so she just stands back. I wish she'd do the cooking though. I thought she would but am surprised at how she hasn't got involved

HOLLYE Byron did that one night too. I had to change his linen twice cause he threw up on it twice in the one night. I went out the next day & bought more matress protectors. Hang in there with the Bfeeding. It's bloody hard but I'm sure your persistance will pay off xx

PP That night feeding must be driving you insane. You poor thing.

CSAB I'm so glad Olivia's u/s came back all clear. Glad she's put on some weight too. The nurse who came to my house after Byron was born said she is happy to see any type of weight gain xx

TAN I have the same prob as you. My letdown is really good. Most times Byron only takes 10 mins for a feed. He still puts on nearly 300g every week so the paed is happy with that. He always gets bad wind cause of it too. I have to be really careful about allowing him the time to digest his feeds & not bouncing him or changing his nappy straight away. I put him in the rocker for at least 20 mins after his feeds (except for his night ones. I hold him upright for 20 mins). I also give him Infacol occaisionally if his wind is real bad

Byron has finally settled down after a week of crying & minimal sleep. I have inflicted a strict routine on him and that has done the trick. My beautiful baby is back again. He had his 8wk shots last Monday & I wonder if that was a big factor. I'm enjoying the routine - feed, play, sleep. It's a better household for it.

He sleeps really good overnight. He'll wake around 2am for a feed & falls straight back to sleep, then he wakes around 5 or 6 & I cuddle him, in bed, back to sleep till around 7. This works most mornings anyway. I can't complain about my nights at all.

We're off to get another weigh in tomorrow. I love seeing how much weight he puts on each week. It's weird!

Oh really? Because that's what Jude does too and yet I can't seem to manage more than 4 hours a sleep every night. But you know what, I'm one of those light sleepers who rests more than sleeps so I actually NEED about 9 hours of "sleep" a night to function. My neighbour next door seems to get by just fine on 6 hours of sleep (I can hear him going to bed and waking up) so he should be looking after Jude at night.

PS. My husband took Jude to get weighed today, hoping I could sleep but I got hungry and had to get up. Anyway, he just called to tell me my hard work is paying off because Jude is over 3kgs today. Woo Hoo!

Hi girls!
I have been lent a angelcare monitor for ethan yayayay !!!! So he is asleep on his belly as we speak.
Last night i just coslept with him. i couldnt bare the screaming all night. So at 830 he layed next to me and fed at 11,1,4, 630. Which is a vast improvement i tell you!! he only had one unsettle time about 3-4am when he wouldnt settle.

I am looking forward to seeing if him belly sleeping tonight makes a difference. Would love more than 2 hrs of sleep in a row!

Kur - great news on over 3kg!! i remember with Ashley is was exciting as she was only 2.6kg born too! Ethan put on almost 450gm in the first 2 weeks so no probs here with weigh gain lol

Well i am being creative and cooking while my nappies are washing, DD is watching playschool, DS asleep... really want a cuppa tea but mmm not sure if i should... i heard tea can upset bubs belly???

Georgie! how is your little man? I am craving a day on the beach.. want fish and chips at the spit.. so ashley can play with the puppies at the off leash beach. one day when i make the effort to go down on my own we should meet up if you like?
